Witch.

Countless number of monsters and devils appear from Outcall, but the existences that people know as witches are rare. It is because it is difficult to classify a monster as a witch. They are a unique monster in Outcall that either has reached its maturity or dies out first from concentrated hunting.

However.

When they do rise to the odds, and reach their maturity, these Witches become a menace that even a Master Rank Hero will find immense difficulty to hunt.

What then makes a witch a witch?

First, a witch has to have the ability to produce ghosts. Because of the high number of undead monsters a witch produces, a witch’s home is called a ‘stronghold’.

Second, a witch needs to have a human body. Without a human body, a witch cannot use her magic properly.

Finally, a witch must possess intelligence on par with humans, because a witch without intelligence cannot efficiently distribute her ghosts.

The playing witch child in front of me is inferior to a fully matured witch as she doesn’t meet the second and third requirements. That makes her an easier kill than a mature witch. But man, I wonder, what Hajin exactly feels after killing this little girl from the novel so that he can finish the Hidden Stage.

In ‘The Novel’s Extra’, he shows hesitation, but in the end is able to firm his resolve. Killing a monster sounds so much better than killing a child. I am not any better as I will be doing the same.

[Witch] [—Evandel the Witch. Possesses a spirit body and produces low-ranking ghosts.]

My system interface gives me information about the little witch. It is immediate information that Hajin helps integrate into the system.

Evandel will one day become infamous. If it follows the story of The Returnee Hero, then Evandel will grow into an adult witch who has a stronghold of her own. In the original story, Evandel is raised by Djinns, protected from stress and danger. After reaching adulthood and becoming independent, she establishes her stronghold in an abandoned school in Suwon.

Recalling the history book I peruse in researching the rare monsters of Outcall, the first witch to appear is subjugated by Shin Myungchul. After the effects of the damage a witch can cause, it is made a high priority to subjugate witches.

The Stronghold that comes to be known as Evandel’s Castle in the future, becomes the most fearsome stronghold in history. The Hero Association at that time describes the castle as no different than a [Tower].

By killing the inferior version of Evandel in front of me, I will be able to obtain two things namely Aether and Evandel’s Seed. In The Returnee Hero, Tomer only takes Aether giving Evandel’s Seed to the Djinn Faction she is following. In The Novel’s Extra, Hajin takes both of them— the Aether as his weapon and gear, and Evandel’s Seed as his family.

It is a very magical thing. I recall the story when Hajin feeds the Seed with Rachel’s blood and grows into a beautiful child who serves as Hajin’s emotional support. Originally, Hajin’s intention for the grown Evandel’s Seed is to use it as a weapon, a means to an end, to help him fight the calamities from the future.

My brain goes into this musing within a series of microseconds. "Such a pitiful child." I embrace that thought. I fancy myself a hypocrite, and I am verily aware of how destructive my two extremes of emotions and cold logic can be.

Tomer has killed that child, Hajin has done the same, and now it is my turn.

Her appearance did not make me hesitate. She has a tiny face and is only 140 centimeters tall. She makes Aether slither to her neck like a scarf while she squishes the soul of the ghost I recently killed. Her hands are soft, her complexion is pale, and her eyes are dead.

Dark beautiful hair decorates her head. Except for the ghostly appearance she possesses, the only thing she has going for her is the cascading black hair as long as her height. The black little witch hat is cute too but it appears to be in energy form and is something that is born of her own magic power.

I am a hypocrite. I tell myself as if hypnotizing myself into doing the unthinkable. It bounces to my two extremes— emotion that often rejects the easier choice, and cold logic that deceives the emotion. Currently, I feel myself relying more and more on emotion.

I use my [Always Here] to approach Evandel. As I enter her range, I take something out of my little pouch and stuff it in the little witch’s mouth. It is a dark chocolate I am keeping for a snack, already half-unwrapped.

The little witch finally realizes my presence. She frowns at the stranger’s sudden appearance. I use my [Always Here] to imitate the dark and eerie atmosphere. The undead also have a certain aura to them. I use my superior Intelligence Stat to recall that chill that I experienced as I entered this cave.

A new move comes to mind using [Always Here] as the basis.

[> Empathetic Imitation— Adjust the Aura to replicate the Aura of others be it another person, monster, place, expression, or impression.]

The new special combo move takes effect.

Evandel doesn’t see me as hostile as she cutely munchs on her chocolate. She looks like just any other child but with a bad complexion. The ambiance here in the dark cave will never be good for her health!

No wonder, she looks quite bad.

“I still have more. Do you want to follow me outside?” I want to make fun of myself for sounding so wrong. I am definitely not a criminal, but just an ordinary guy. “I have more sweets.”

I grab a lollipop from my pouch, another snack to increase my sugar levels and feed my brain some fuel. I unwrap it and give the candy to her. The Little Evandel receives it with no hesitation as she sticks it into her own mouth.

I observe that her intelligence is not any different from any three-year-old child.

But she sure has strong teeth. I hear the crunching of the candy in her mouth, and quickly, she starts munching on the stick. “Hey, don’t do that!” I struggle to take the stick of the lollipop she is chewing with her mouth. “You unruly brat! Give it to me!”

Evandel is using Aether to resist my attempt to get it from her. “Bad girl!” I scold her harshly. “This thing could injure you!”

She seems to understand my words as she starts crying. “Waa~ah!” Or maybe she is just crying, because of me taking the lollipop's stick.

I fearfully look around, afraid that undead suddenly springs up on me in anger for making Evandel cry. I sigh in relief, but anger takes a second grip on me as I see little Evandel’s gums to be a bit swollen and bleeding. The Glow Dust is still in effect, so I can see it clear as day.

“I knew it,” I take a hold of the brat, and take some potion to smear it in her mouth. “Behave yourself…” The brat calms down as she takes the potion bottle from me and starts drinking it earnestly. I recall that one potion brand having a sweetener to it.

“This is ridiculous…”

Before I even knew it, I became attached and closer to little Evandel. I nestle her in my arms like a baby… one big baby. “You look like a three-year-old, but you are being spoiled this much… Grow some degree of independence already!” I playfully jest.

I cannot kill such an adorable little thing. It makes me wonder, why Kim Hajin did not try the more peaceful approach first in the novel. “I want to adopt you… Can you be my daughter?” I ask it, no, I ask her. It is not like she can answer as she is a child.

What do I do?

“Then how about this? I swear to give you a better life. I cannot always be there as I will be busy, but I will be there when I can. No, scratch that! I will be there when you need me! Of course, we will need a schedule or something. As I said, I am a busy person.”

What the hell? I don’t even know what I am saying. My emotions are certainly complicated. But then something magical happens. In the same way, after I kill the switch monster, a faint thread suddenly comes off from Evandel and connects to me.

“Dada,” Evandel calls to me softly.

I am like… What the fuck?

“Hey, Evandel, can you understand words?”

“Dada,” she replies... with the same dull tone as before.

“Uhu? So what does that mean?”

I speak to Evandel back and forth trying to get a grasp of what did just happen. But I am learning nothing. I have finally decided to give up. The Glow Dust’s effects are almost upon us.

I don’t like to keep Evandel under this darkness anymore. She deserves better.

When I am about to remove myself from the isolated space, something unexpected occurs.

Clack, clack, clack—

A series of striking sounds ring out from all directions. Bones joining together form the shape of a man. I soon find myself in the presence of a Death Knight. He stands as tall as me and wields a sword sharper than my pair of daggers judging by their dangerous gleam.

Dark shadowy forces imbue his bones, and tough steel armor covers his frame.

I feel incredibly tense at the moment.

In one swift movement, the Death Knight comes to a single kneel, his sword remains in his sheathe. He addresses me with his hoarse guttural voice. “I exist to obey.” He says.

This is a change I did not see coming.
