This is a change I did not see coming.

But it is a good change.

Judging by its behavior, it must be talking to Evandel. I wait for a moment to see if it has any more to say. The Death Knight remains kneeling, his head bowed and is waiting for commands. As a child lacking any method of verbal communication, I cannot expect Evandel to command the Death Knight.

“I exist to obey.” The Death Knight repeats the same line again.

In the novel I know, the result of killing Evandel will summon various undead who will attack the perpetrator at once. But because I did something entirely different, something like this is now happening. Can I order this Undead?

To have a Death Knight as a bodyguard will be a great boon to us. On top of improving our combat ability, it can also serve as cannon fodder for us.

“Hey, why are you acting like this?” I ask the Death Knight an abstract question. I wait and see, but the Death Knight simply remains in his place.

“I exist to obey.” The Death Knight repeats the only line it knows.

“Rise,” I give it a direct order as a result, the Death Knight rises to its feet. “Awesome… This Death Knight is dope…” I feel like I just hit the jackpot today. “Follow,” I give it another command.

With my Night-Vision-Visor, I lead the way outside of the cave. I remove myself from the isolated space easily, but bringing Evandel to the outside will be a bit challenging. I imbue [Always Here] on Evandel and the Death Knight following me.

I should be able to fool nature itself, thus allowing something like an artificial dungeon outbreak with only Evandel and the Death Knight. I am technically forcibly bringing monsters outside a dungeon, and this counts as a crime.

However, I don’t believe that Dungeons and Monsters are that simple. From goblins, kobolds, and orcs, there is a touch of civilization in each and single one of them. It cannot be that magic power is the only reason why Dungeons are appearing around the world.

I’d rather believe that these monsters come from another place… another plane of existence… or another world! If that is the case, then it is wrong we simply label them as monsters by our standards, because of what happened to Outcall.

I am not a monster sympathizer, simply being objective. It really depends on each individual though what is objective or not. Still, my theory stands uncontested as I see no reason to reject it in the meantime.

Dungeon Outbreaks, and rarely, Dungeon Explosion occur because the magic power density inside the Dungeon has reached its maximum threshold. When they reach that threshold, the dungeon releases monsters from within. This is a natural phenomenon that happens in the life cycles of Dungeons.

The entrances to a dungeon have a kind of natural barrier that preserves the dungeon ecology. For me to bypass it, I must fool the Dungeon into thinking that Evandel and the Death Knight is not a monster of this Dungeon.

I feel my mental energy drain with my magic power as I use on them.

Our little party arrives by the entrance from where I start. The familiar sharp ravines enter my sight. To my surprise, someone just climbs out from the ledge of the cliff. I see a hand, and then a little figure pushing herself above the surface.

Brown-skinned, a little Latina woman, with a healthy and athletic figure shows herself. She looks sporty, except she is actually a mage and not a physical fighter-kind.

“Wha~?” She expresses her shock at the appearance of our interesting party.

“Hello there!” I amiably smile at her response. “Kyah~!” Evandel cheerfully cries as she climbs around me until she reaches my shoulder reminiscent of a certain anime baby. "Pardon her, she got spooked by you," I add.

‘Cube, hack her smartwatch. Get everything you can from her. I don’t want you to leave anything behind. Every connection, every little data she has. Get it.’

[Affirmative.]

Tomer retreats at the threat waiting for her. She is not expecting this at all. ‘What is that? A Death Knight!? Who is that guy? And that creepy baby too!’ She is a Djinn, yet she gets scared by something like this. She is blameless as a Death Knight is really beyond her abilities.

“Get her, Death Knight! Be gentle, I just want her restrained.” I command my new trustworthy subordinate.

In the blink of an eye, the Death Knight apprehends Tomer by dragging the back collar of her robes in front of me. Tomer weakly lands on her knees, frozen. I don’t recall her being particularly timid. In fact, I remember her as a feisty last who is easily provoked in the earlier parts of the story.

“Hey, why are you frozen? Are you doing okay?”

“You smell of undead… but you sound so human…” Tomer replies to me, with apparent fear in her voice. “What are you!?” She desperately tries to stand up, but the Death Knight easily holds her down by putting pressure on her shoulder.

I sense the feistiness I recall from the novel. She must want to fight, but she cannot. The Death Knight alone is not enough to deter her if it is escaping she desires, but there is me— an enigma she cannot get a grasp of.

***

Tomer is attending the Gangwondo Magic Academy, one of the most prestigious schools of magic around the world. She is an elite through and through. But she is not someone who revels in such status.

It is because her eyes are on other things. That is she wants to enact revenge on her father who killed her mother. Alas, it looks like the only purpose she has in life will not even be fulfilled as she finds herself in this conundrum.

She carefully scrutinizes the man hiding his face from a face mask. He has some kind of visor hanging by his neck. He wears a farmer’s straw hat, a Hawaiian polo shirt over a white T-shirt, and jogging pants.

His fashion sense is whack, but despite that, he remains near invisible to her perception. “Am I actually talking to a ghost? There are NPCs in dungeons too who can act human, but I am not inside a dungeon yet, right?”

“If you are thinking that I am an NPC or something, then bad luck. I am not… Because if I am an NPC, then there will be at least a way for you to talk your way out of here…” The man maliciously smiles at her, while removing his face mask.

When he reveals his face to her, Tomer feels her heart jumping in shock. She is not someone who really pays attention to the media and the gossip around her, but the incidents lately are so big that she cannot ignore them anymore.

“You are that guy!?” She recognizes the man before her as the Cube Cadet who gets embroiled in the Djinn attack recently. It finally clicks on her. “I am a Djinn too! Please, spare me! I only came here, because I received some hints!”

***

Tomer confesses to me her Djinn origins fast as if her life depended on it. It really suits my style when others are too smart for their own good. Rather than smart, imaginative fits them better.

[Hacking the smartwatch at 100%][Complete!]

I grin ear to ear, but Tomer seems to perceive this as a villainous smile instead.

“I am sorry, sir! Please spare me! The Lilith Faction must have taken a hit since the incident. My boss should look favorably upon you, sir! We are about to make a move in Cube. By the second semester of Cube, we are about to make an attempt! Reverent sir, you can then take revenge from then!”

I really like it when misunderstanding works to my advantage.

Am I really scaring her that much?

“Yeah, yeah, just go home… I will contact you if I need something…” I frivolously shoo her off. “Death Knight, no need to restrain her. I will count to ten… nine…”

Tomer goes off running and dives from the cliff into midair.

That act leaves me speechless. If she is so fearless, why doesn’t she just attack me? I peer from the cliff and see her receding figure falling with momentum. While in mid-air, her acceleration comes to a sudden halt, and slowly, she starts to decelerate as if a feather falling from above.

This must be the Featherfall Spell.

I am really lucky today to meet Tomer and get Evandel like this. Perhaps, is Hajin’s luck finally rubbing off on me? That is good. I am on a roll! I want more of that luck coming.
