The ride home was smooth and undisturbed.

It was after the sunset, but before the night arrived, the four of them decided to call it a day and went home.

Shao Yan was admiring the glittering lights from the buildings around her when she heard Li Xiqing asked a question.

"What do you want to eat for dinner?"

Shao Yan glanced at him, "Uh.."

Her mind lagged for a few seconds, and the question came too abrupt in the middle of her daydreaming.

"I am actually still kind of full," She slowly said, "maybe let's just buy some fruits and eat them at home?"

Li Xiqing pondered at her suggestions, before giving a brisk nod, "Alright, that's not a bad idea," he said while changing the lane and started to drive towards the supermarket.

"So," she started to say, "uh... what is that about?"

"Huh?" Li Xiqing gave her a quick glance, as he was still driving the car on the highway at the moment, "What do you mean?"

"The Valentine's Day plan," She replied to him and then she stayed silent.

When Li Xiqing was about to reply to her, Shao Yan suddenly continued, "And also... About Vivian."

She was looking intently into his face, "I mean, I saw the way she was looking at you."

Her eyes scanned his every expressions; starting from his eyes, and then his nose tip. His chiseled jaw was set firm as he was concentrating on driving the car.

In a slow motion, Shao Yan saw he parted his lips as he was about to say something. She quickly averted her gaze back to the window, "You know what? Never mind, let's talk about that at home."

Li Xiqing saw the back of her head as she glued her eyesight back onto the scenery that was moving fast outside.

"Yan Yan," he called her softly.

Shao Yan turned her head around and stared back into his eyes.

"Be more confident in your ask. I will tell you everything. Just ask me anything you want to know."

....

"Viv and I met when we were still in college."

"She initially was living in a different state," he started to tell the story, "but she moved to our city when she was dating a senior guy, Liam, who I played hockey with. Basically all of us just sort of hung out together."

Li Xiqing paused as he signaled the car to change lanes and exit the highway.

"When Liam graduated he needed to move to San Francisco for work. But Viv still spent more time with us like usual."

"Five months after he was away, she broke up with him because she said she could not handle a long distance relationship," he gave a little shrug, "eventually, Viv and I spent more time together, and we naturally got together."

His tone was neutral. Shao Yan looked at his poker face. It seemed that the event had happened many years in the past that he grew nonchalant about it; as if he was just telling a story of a friend, and not his own.

"Things were fine between us for the first few years, until both of us started to get busy with work."

The car stopped and Li Xiqing parked the car. He turned to the side and glanced at Shao Yan, "We have arrived, let's get some fruits?"

Shao Yan looked around her and noticed that they were now in the basement of a supermarket parking garage. She nodded as she reached to the side to open the door, "En, let's go."

....

"And then, what happened?"

Shao Yan was walking next to Li Xiqing as he pushed the shopping cart in front of him. It was approaching dinner time, but the crowd in the supermarket was still decent. As it was the weekend, families with children were seen walking around. Shao Yan also noticed some young couples, similar to themselves, were shopping for groceries as well.

"Vivian was an accountant and she earned really well."

Li Xiqing stopped the cart next to stacks of rice, and then he bent down to pick one bag up and put it in the cart, "But the stress took a toll on her, so she decided to be a jewelry designer."

They continued walking, "It was a rough patch when she just started because she had to find her own clients. So, she had to socialize with a lot of people to market her skill and her products."

When the crowd suddenly picked up, Li Xiqing paused what he was saying to step to the side, his other hand wrapped around Shao Yan by her waist. He steered her to walk at the inner aisle while he walked at the outer side. He did not want to see other people bumped into her.

"At the same time, AG International was just branching out. We decided to open another branch in another state so I had to travel a lot, " he glanced at Shao Yan, "gradually, both of us spent less and lesser time together."

Li Xiqing paused before asking her, "Where should we go next? Fruits and vegetable section?"

"En, we need to buy spinach," Shao Yan nodded, "I want to bake some spinach quiche this weekend. Mandy was telling me she was craving the one from Paolo's in New York, so I want to try recreating it for her."

Li Xiqing returned her smile and nodded, and then together they started to walk to the left section towards the fresh produce.

"You have to stop pampering her," He started to say, "Mandy can bake her own dish, you know? She is a great cook. Her mother in law owns many restaurants in Germany too."

Shao Yan burst into laughter, "You do realize that me pampering her is also the same with me pampering you?" She said as she linked her hands around his arm, "Are you not happy with how I chose to pamper you, then, Mister?"

Li Xiqing raised a finger to tap on her nose tip, "Of course I love it, my point is, don't tire yourself."

"En, I know," Shao Yan winked at him before she let out a wide grin and nodded docilely, "so what happened next?"

"One day, a friend told me that he saw Viv in Los Angeles, that she was shopping around with another man when she was supposedly staying in New York," he said as he tore a plastic bag for Shao Yan to bag some oranges that she was holding on to.

"But, I would prefer to trust my partner than others, so I brushed it off."
