“Hmm? A mistake, you say? It didn’t appear to me that your daughter uttered such things inadvertently, Duke Rissel,” Rihannan retorted with a subtle smile, highlighting the fact that his daughter, Seraphina, had yet to offer a proper apology to the queen.

“Apologize sincerely to Her Majesty at once!” Duke Rissel swiftly turned to Seraphina, reprimanding her sternly.

Upon hearing her father’s command, Seraphina tightly shut her eyes and clenched her fist. She knew that the only way to extricate herself from the predicament she had created was to extend her heartfelt apology to the queen. Should the queen accept her appearance of contrition and pardon her for her unbecoming conduct, she would refrain from mentioning her misbehavior to the king, preserving her dignity.

With a graceful descent, Seraphina knelt down. Meanwhile, the nobility surrounding her, as well as those observing from a distance, maintained a reverent silence, fanning themselves in the oppressive atmosphere. Seraphina, the noblewoman who had previously wielded influence over the gossip mills and social circles, now found herself kneeling in front of hundreds of penetrating gazes.

This was an unprecedented sight.

“Your Majesty, I was a fool and committed a terrible blunder. I humbly implore your forgiveness…”

Rihannan’s icy blue eyes remained calm and composed as she looked down at Seraphina, gently lifting her chin.

“Please rise, Duchess.”

Following the queen’s command, Seraphina stood up, her hands trembling as they clung to the hem of her skirt.

“I believe it is essential for you to exercise greater consideration in your words and actions henceforth,” the queen remarked, a smile adorning her countenance. “Surely you comprehend that ignorance can only serve as a feeble excuse to evade responsibility for your actions.”

“…I shall bear your admonition in mind, Your Majesty,” Seraphina responded with a bitter undertone.

Father and daughter hastily exited the scene, their departure spurred by embarrassment. The nobility shook their heads disapprovingly, their eyes fixed on the retreating figures from House Rissel.

“The duchess had displayed considerable haughtiness until now…”

“Yes,” a voice nodded in agreement, “She conducted herself as if she were a queen in the absence of one. In the end, her audacious arrogance has brought her trouble.”

“But she has undoubtedly learned a valuable lesson, hasn’t she?”

With the slight disturbance resolved, the once serene ballroom was now filled with joyous laughter. Mrs. Cessley, who had momentarily left, reappeared and positioned herself beside the queen. The lively conversation gained momentum, and Rihannan engaged in delightful banter with the nobles.

This time, a group of gentlemen approached her.

“Your Majesty, please pardon our intrusion upon your lively discussions, but might we also join in?” one of the gentlemen, Marquis Parvad, requested.

The marquis playfully slapped his son’s shoulder.

“Allow me to introduce my son, Your Majesty. Go ahead, offer your greetings to the Queen.”

A youthful-looking young man grasped the queen’s hand and pressed a meaningful kiss upon the back.

“I am Ash Parvad, the eldest son of House Parvad. It is an honor to be in your presence, Your Majesty.”

The queen smiled graciously. “The pleasure is mutual, Sir Parvad.”

As only nobles with distinguished titles and houses had the privilege of greeting the king and queen at the commencement of the ball, many nobles now sought to present their sons and daughters to the royal couple.

As the exchange of pleasantries drew to a close, Marquis Parvad inquired, “What was the topic of your conversation?”

Rihannan laughed joyously. “We were merely engaged in discussing trivial matters, such as the books we have recently savored.”

“Is that so? I am quite intrigued to learn about the literary preferences of our young ladies these days,” the wife of Count Saphia replied.

Upon hearing the voice, Ash Parvad was taken aback, but he quickly regained his composure. He hadn’t realized that the king had approached them, pulling the queen close to him, as if staking his claim. With one hand firmly on Rihannan’s hip, the king wore a mischievous smile, indicating that he was merely jesting. Ash Parvad felt a rush of nerves, but as he saw the playful expression on the king’s face, he understood it was all in good fun. He managed to regain his composure and flashed an awkward smile, his cheeks tinged with a faint blush.

“My apologies, Your Majesty. I became engrossed in this delightful conversation and unintentionally crossed a line.”

“It seems everyone is more interested in conversation than dancing in this ballroom. At this rate, rumors might circulate that our Queen held everyone captive with her endless talks, refusing to let them go. How about you take the lead, Sir Parvad, and grace the daughters of the esteemed nobles with a dance?”

Upon the king’s words, the young daughters of the nobility beamed with excitement, fanning themselves in anticipation. Ash Parvad, a noble slated to inherit a dukedom, possessed both handsomeness and a charming personality. Among the noble daughters, many saw him as an ideal suitor.

Ash Parvad nodded and approached one of the noble daughters, extending a courteous request.

“Miss, would you honor me with this dance?”

The young lady’s face lit up with joy as she nodded in agreement.

Returning her smile, Ash Parvad extended his hand, escorting his partner onto the dance floor. With him leading the way, several other gentlemen followed suit, stepping forward to request the noble daughters’ hands for a dance.

“Rihannan, if you’re feeling tired, perhaps it’s time for you to retire and rest.”

Igor’s suggestion met with a nod of agreement from Rihannan.

Fatigue was beginning to take its toll on her.

“My Queen, please come this way.”

Mrs. Cessley guided Rihannan towards the interior of the palace.

Rihannan offered her apologies to the nobility and excused herself, leaving the ball ahead of everyone else.

Upon returning to the Queen’s Palace, she immediately took a bath, refreshing herself. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she gently brushed her hair, when Mrs. Cessley entered the room, carrying a tray with a warm cup of tea.

“You must have felt quite nervous today. Please, allow this tea to ease your tension.”

Rihannan nodded gratefully and took a sip from the cup.

Mrs. Cessley couldn’t help but smile, a sense of satisfaction radiating from her.

“You did wonderfully today, My Queen. You handled the situation with the House of Rissel’s daughter admirably. What transpired was solely her doing and will not tarnish your reputation.”

Rihannan glanced up, meeting her lady-in-waiting’s eyes.

“You were watching?”

Mrs. Cessley nodded affirmatively.

“Yes, I was present when she tried to mock you. Initially, I had intended to intervene, but I believed in your ability to handle the situation on your own. So, I watched from a distance. I also prevented His Majesty from hastily intervening, ensuring he observed the situation for a moment.”

“I see.”

Rihannan took another sip of the tea, her thoughts momentarily consumed by her own contemplation. Then, she looked directly into her lady-in-waiting’s eyes.

“…But Mrs. Cessley, why didn’t you inform me about

Seraphina Rissel beforehand?”

“My Queen, what do you mean–”

“I’m certain you were aware of her ill intentions towards me, stemming from the complex dynamics between the king and me. I want to know why you didn’t disclose this information to me earlier. Knowing you, I’m well aware that you don’t easily overlook such details.”

Embarrassment flickered across the duchess’ countenance, an uncommon sight for her, as she typically exuded a calm demeanor. Hastily, Mrs. Cessley approached the queen and knelt before her.
