Chapter 221 - "The Matter is Settled and a New Event"

“The Matter is Settled and a New Event”

“I see. Thank you very much.”

I said as I returned to the Demon Lord’s room and informed the two of them of the situation. For the time being, I told Sara and Sanya that they should wait a while before meeting with Saniya again. Saniya also needed to prepare to meet with the two of them, so she accepted this way of handling things.

Incidentally, the Seven Demon Generals had already withdrawn, and were working on the aftermath of this disturbance. Oshibori was among them, but we merely exchanged glances and did not have any real conversation.

“Second princess. There is no need to worry too much. You did not intend to deceive those two, correct?”

“Of course not! There’s no way I would do such a thing to them!”

“Sara and Sanya understand that too. Still, if you are worried about it, it’s simply a matter of making amends over time.”

Everyone makes mistakes. The important thing when you make a mistake wasn’t to regret having made the mistake, nor to be careful not to make mistakes. It was about how you make up for that mistake.

Of course, it depends on the individual situation, but if a mistake could be corrected, the first priority should be considering how to compensate for that mistake.

And Saniya’s mistake this time was one that could be corrected. Though, if I had not been there, Sara and Sanya might not have even been able to make it back alive to the castle. However, the fact of the matter was that they were alive without injury. That was what was important.

“Hmph.”

“What’s with you, idiot? Are you going to spout some nonsense again about me cheating?”

“You’re treating me differently than you treated her! It wouldn’t hurt to be a little nicer to me too!”

“……”

I looked at Nagartinya with a gaze filled with contempt, far beyond mere exasperation. There was no way someone would receive kindness if they were unable to show kindness to others. I wonder why she was unable to comprehend something so obvious.

“If you want to be treated kindly, make an effort to be kind to the other person yourself. At the point when you can’t do that, you have no right to receive anyone’s kindness.”

“Grrrr…”

Nagartinya deliberately made a sulky face as a cute appeal, but for anyone who caught a glimpse of how she normally acts, it had the opposite effect. Hey, Nagartinya. If you don’t learn how to empathize with others’ feelings, no one’s ever going to be kind to you.

In any case, we decided for the time being to wait and see regarding Sara and her sisters’ issues, and I would continue keeping them in custody at my residence for now.

“I’m very grateful to Rolando-dono and Nagartinya-dono for this incident.”

“Well, I’m already committed to this boat. Don’t worry about it.”

“Yes, yes, you must thank this great sage Nagartinya-sama greatly!”

“……”

Does she understand what I’m saying? Isn’t she a Japanese person reincarnated here like me? I wonder where she left the Japanese virtue of humility.

Whether it was her original personality or something that made her this way after coming here I didn’t know, but for now, I’d just pat her on the head.

“Ow! Rolando-kyun! You really are too harsh to me!!!”

“If you understand that there is a problem with your attitude, such words would not come out in the first place, right? Enough, this matter is over with now. You can go back.”

“I still feel like you’re treating me rather crudely…”

I wonder why this lolibaba doesn’t try to fix her attitude if that’s how she feels? They said some privileges come with age, but wasn’t the opposite happening and she was just becoming more stubborn and set in her ways? Honestly, old people these days…

And so, Saniya’s matter was also temporarily settled for the moment, and at last, the demon race incident had come to an end.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few days after the demon race incident, I received a summons from the king one day. I had already told him and the others the details, so I deduced this was not about inquiring into that.
I had also told them I would continue keeping Sara and Sanya here, so it wasn’t related to that either. Just what could it be?
“Well, no use worrying about it. I’ll find out when I go.”
I decided and immediately teleported over to see the king. He quickly said, “Oh, you’ve arrived” and I asked him about the reason for summoning me.
“So, was there something you needed?”
“Oh right, Tiara happened to find out about the demon princess and said she wants to invite them over for tea.”
“I see.”
She probably roughly grasped that I was involved in this and wanted to impress me even a little, or perhaps confirm whether the demon princesses staying at my place harbored any amorous feelings toward me – I guessed it was one of those two reasons.
“I hate to ask this so soon after the demon race incident, but could you oblige this request?”
“Understood. However, the invitee is not Sara and the others, but Tiara. If she comes to my estate, I’ll permit her to have a tea party with those two.”
It would be problematic in various ways for Sara and the other demons to come and go freely from the human royal castle. Even if I teleported them there and back, it would be nearly impossible to keep them from being seen inside the castle.
In that case, it would be better for Tiara to visit my estate and have the tea party with Sara’s group to prevent information leaks – I judged so.
“That’s a nice idea, isn’t it?”
“…Sariya. How long have you been there?”
“Just now. More importantly, I would also like to participate in that tea party if I may.”
While discussing matters with the king, Sariya appeared seemingly out of nowhere. As I didn’t catch her presence with my sensing abilities, I hadn’t noticed when she arrived.
“Do you think the princess on the other side will be intimidated if you go?”
“Oh, are you suggesting I’m like a wicked stepmother?”
“I’m not saying that! I meant that as the queen, your presence might make the other party uncomfortable.”
While listening to the king desperately trying to smooth things over, I considered the situation. With Sara and the others having already spent several days in the human realm, they must be getting bored. Perhaps hosting an event for them would be part of my duty as host.
Having decided that, I figured I should go all out and put something spectacular together. As I was devising my plan, someone tugged on the hem of my clothes.
“…”
“You’re the one she mentioned, yes? Elder Sister Tiara’s fiancé?”
“And you are…?”
“Oh, pardon me. I am Sheryl, the second princess of the Schells Kingdom. I’m eight years old this year. Pleased to make your acquaintance.”
As she said this, Sheryl grabbed the hem of her dress and curtsied deeply. Though the gesture was amateurish, she properly followed the etiquette forms befitting royalty, and I felt a sense of grace from it. I hadn’t realized Tiara had a younger sister at all.
I was not an uncouth man who lacked decorum. I made it a rule to return courtesy with courtesy. And so, I switched to nobleman mode after so long.
“Why, how very polite. I work in this royal capital as an adventurer by the name of Rolando. I’m pleased to make your acquaintance too, Princess Sheryl.”
“!? …You at least seem to know the formalities.”
I put a hand over my chest in a gentlemanly fashion as I returned Sheryl’s curtsy. Seeing me do that, Sheryl opened her eyes wide in surprise and muttered softly.
Meanwhile, the king and queen who had been silently watching our exchange immediately realized from my usual attitude that I was just teasing Sheryl.
Just then, another person arrived in the king’s room – Tiara, Sheryl’s sister and first princess of Schells Kingdom.
“Pardon my intrusion. Father, about the matter from the other day…”
“Oh my, if it isn’t Princess Tiara! As radiant as ever – when you walked in, I thought an angel had wandered in by mistake!”
“Wh-wh-wh-what are you! Me, me, an angel!”
“Elder sister…”
Faced with my blatant flattery, Tiara stumbled over her words in agitation while I smiled thinly, gagging on the inside. Seeing that, Sheryl simply called out “Elder sister” as if she was thinking something.
“Princess Tiara, Queen Sariya – regarding the tea party matter, I have some ideas I’d like to take charge of, so I’ll make the preparations and send word when everything is ready.”
“Understood. We look forward to it. Sheryl, Tiara, it’s time for your studies now. Go quickly.”
“Yes!”
And so, preparations were beginning for a rushed tea party with royalty as guests.
