Chapter 236 - "Securing Personnel"

“Long time no see, Dondre.”

“Oh if it isn’t Rolando-sama, I’m extremely honored you remember my humble name.”

“Save the flattery. Let’s get right to business. I’m opening a food stall, so I need four people who can cook, six for serving customers… Yeah, four cooks, six servers, plus two combat specialists as guards. Twelve people total. You got that right? All women.”

“Kukukuku, as expected of Rolando-sama, to purchase twelve slaves at once… Please wait a moment, I’ll bring the slaves right away.”

It seems Dondre, the representative of the Dondre Slave Company, remembers me from when I hired employees for the Commercio Trading Company. Hearing my requirements, he smiles slyly and heads into the back.

After a while, Dondre returns with about twenty female slaves. Checking their skills, six have cooking abilities, ten have serving experience, and the remaining four are former adventurers and mercenaries accustomed to rough work.

“For now, this is all I can offer Rolando-sama.”

“I see, I’ll take them all then.”

“Kukukuku, truly befitting of Rolando-sama. I’ll handle the paperwork right away, but the master will be Machad-sama as before, yes?”

“Yeah, do that.”

“Huh?”

Since all the slaves Dondre brought matched my conditions, I decided to purchase them all despite it being over the requested number, thinking we may be shorthanded otherwise.

Naturally, I won’t be the master – I’m having Machad cover for me again. That’s why I brought him.

Meanwhile, Machad is not only shocked that I suddenly bought twenty slaves, but seems stunned that he has to contract all of them.

“R-Rolando-sama? Wouldn’t it be better if you contracted them yourself this time?”

“No, this is a business undertaken by the Commercio Trading Company. As a company representative, it’s more convenient for you to be the master, don’t you think?”

“Y-you’re right. Understood.”

I spoke to the reluctant Machad in a bit of noble mode, giving him an inarguable smile. Whether he gave in to the pressure or realized resistance was futile, he sighed in resignation and nodded.

After that, the contracts for all twenty slaves were completed, securing additional labor for the new food stall. When the contracting finished, Dondre showed the total for the slaves.

“That will be three large gold coins for twenty people.”

“Here’s the payment.”

“Rolando-sama, it’s four coins…”

“The extra is a tip. We may ask for your help again.”

Like before, I pay more than the quoted amount as a tip of sorts. Since we may need to buy more slaves again, I should build a good relationship with the slave merchant Dondre.

“Thank you kindly. Please come to me again if you need more slaves – I’ll serve you diligently.”

“I look forward to your cooperation then.”

Letting Dondre know that Machad and I left the slave company with the purchased slaves in tow.

…grumble

After walking for a bit from the slave company, a stomach suddenly rumbles loudly. Of course, it wasn’t mine – I glance at Machad next to me and he quickly shakes his head to deny it’s his.

As we have this exchange, one of the female slaves speaks up with a vulgar laugh.

“Gyahyahya, sorry ’bout that. My belly got so empty my stomach bugs couldn’t hold it in, see?”

“You are?”

“Name’s Carifa, a rough n’ tumble former merc lady. You’re that rumored adventurer, yeah? Please give us some food.”

Saying that, Carifa grins slyly and strikes a provocative pose. While her conduct is anything but graceful, befitting a thief or mercenary, this is my first time seeing such a tomboyish woman.

With messy shoulder-length red hair and sharp eyes that seem to be scheming something worrisome, she looks to be in her early twenties. Contrasting that, her toned body and the large bust barely contained by her tunic give off considerable sensuality.

As evidence, Machad visibly gulps at the sight of her. …Like with Mocha, will he be okay?

“What nonsense are you spouting? We were purchased by our master. We have no right to make such selfish demands.”

As I’m thinking that, another slave speaks up. She’s one of the ten with serving experience, named Shifan. With long blonde hair and a gentle atmosphere conveyed by her droopy eyes, she seems to be in her late twenties, contrasting Carifa.

She too has a bust that rivals Carifa’s, with two protrusions pushing up her tunic’s chest part as if asserting their presence. From her age, it seems she has served multiple masters, ingraining service in her very being and holding the perspective that “slaves should obey their master’s every whim.”

“The wise yield to the inevitable. I intend to use anything I can. Being a slave doesn’t change that.”

“What are you saying! As slaves, we should act accordingly. Honestly, you rogue mercenaries…”

“Shuddup! Aren’t you just a filthy woman who’s fallen as low as she can go, becoming a slave!!”

“What!? I cannot overlook those words! Take them back!!”

“Make me.”

New encounters aren’t always good. In a new environment, you’re bound to meet types you don’t get along with. In this case, it happened among the slaves – Carifa and Shifan seem fundamentally incompatible.

Since I purchased them all, I have no intention of returning either now. I was hoping they could get along, but before I can say anything, they’re both struck on the head by a fist – not mine, but another slave’s.

“That’s enough. Do you realize that while you quarrel, you’re wasting our master’s valuable time?”

“Y-you’re right, sorry ’bout that.”

“M-my apologies.”

“Master, they have both said this, so I pray you will forgive them. I will keep watch over these two.”

The one who hit them is a woman who looks like she could pull off a dashing prince – likely a beauty who would suit men’s clothing. With blue short hair, light blue eyes, and a slender tall figure making her chest about level with my face, only her bust is worryingly modest with slight bulges. I felt a tinge of disappointment.

“You are?”

“I’m Melanda. I was vice commander of the mercenary band Carifa belonged to.”

While her status is indeed that, she’s in the cooking specialist slot. So a battle cook of sorts.

“You say that, but what will you do? Master?”

“Huh? M-me!?”

“You’re their master, right? I haven’t contracted with them.”

When I pass the issue to Machad, he panics. The slaves’ gazes turn to Machad, who looks even more flustered. As he struggles for words, this is what comes out.

“W-well, just be more careful from now on and there’ll be no issues.”

“Thank you very much.”

“Now then, more importantly, first we’ll get some food in you. Let’s go.”

“That won’t be—Rolando-sama!”

Ignoring Machad’s voice, I head to an eatery with the slaves in tow.
