Chapter 2: Ever-changing Daily Lives

Episode 31: Curry-sama

“Thank you for climbing the mountain, everyone.”

All the groups have safely arrived at the Nature House.

For some reason, about 150 students from 5 classes and 10 teachers are gathered in the plaza of the flag-raising platform that is in every camp facility.

In the midst of all these people’s attention, Tachibana-sensei began her speech.

“I am relieved that no one was seriously injured and that we arrived safely. You all did a great job! Now, I’ll announce the group with the fastest time.”

This is the only advantage of climbing hard.

That is the group that arrives first will be able to use the gorgeous ingredients for the curry cooking that is about to take place.

Tachibana-sensei had said, “Please look forward to it,” I was actually looking forward to it.

Now, I wonder if our team came in first place.

“The team with the fastest time was group 1, group 3! Applause!”

“Whoo-hoo!”

The group 1, group 3 that was announced was exactly our group.

Hosoi was the one who shouted with joy.

I was also happy inside, but I couldn’t scream in front of all these people.

During the basketball game, I screamed like a wild animal, but….

But we’re still in first place. We’re in first place.

Let’s see, what kind of food will they give us?

“And now the gorgeous ingredients you would enjoy…”

…gulp.

“The beef for the curry will be Hida beef!”

“Hida beef for curry?!”

(T/N: HIda-gyu is known as one of the finest qualities among varieties of beef, meets every standard, and is of the highest quality in marbling, luster, color, texture and smell.)

H-hida g-g-gyu…… h-hida… g-gyu…

Immediately after, tsukkomi of all the grades echoed.

(T/N: A recap of what tsukkomi is. It is an act you do when something is ridiculous of funny.)(E/N: Basically what those straight man in anime do, example is that glasses boy in gintama forgot about his name, tho I recommend you to watch d-frag, highest amount of tsukkomi in 1 anime cour, though focus on the tone of their voice not the subs since it’s cringe.)

I’ll be honest, I feel the same way!

You can’t just use the best beef for curry!

Curry is just a magical dish that can be made delicious with cheap meat.

I like it when the meat is a little tough because it gives it a different crunch.

You won’t know what it tastes like if you put it in curry and if you want it (curry) to be more expensive, you can just use rice or curry powder!

Tachibana-sensei, I am sure that you will be the type of person to use your staus to the extreme if you play a game. Terrible ~

Cheena pulled on my jersey.

“Yori, what’s hi…dagyu? What does that mean?”

I replied with a sigh, still making the same little head-tilt gesture that suited her.

“It’s a Japanese brand of beef. What is the teacher thinking?”

“What, aren’t you happy that it’s good meat?”

“That feeling is… Hosoi will tell it for you now.”

To the direction I pointed, Hosoi stood up abruptly as he can’t take it any longer.

“You don’t understand me, Sensei!”

Hosoi clenched his fists and spun his words passionately.

He wants to emphasize what he wanted to say.

“Even if you use only one good ingredient, everyone is equal under curry-sama. It’s just that we’re all part of the circle of truth!”

“Don’t worry! “Don’t worry! Good meat will show its own strength even under Curry-sama! Even if you eat it with a reason, Hora-chan will surely pull you down! Please believe me!”

The outdoor cooking area.

After we finished climbing and taking a break, it was time to start making curry.

I was in charge of the… fire.

I’ve been trained to be a survivalist, so this is probably the best choice for me.

“Aren’t you in charge of cooking, Iori? I can make navy curry.”

That was Miyamoto’s opinion. But….

“’Navy’ in navy curry refers to the former Japanese Navy. The US Navy doesn’t make curry.”

That’s the truth.

In fact, I don’t make curry often, so I’ll be more useful here than in cooking.

I can handle the fire on my own, so I’ll let the other five do the cooking.

Incidentally, as this was an outdoor cooking event for high school students, there was no instruction on how to start a fire or cook.

We were told to do our own research and prepare in advance.

In that case, a regular group would need two or three people to start the fire.

I shaved thin wood with a knife to make feather sticks, and lit them with matches.

When the fire was lit, I started with the thin wood, and when the fire finally spread to the thick wood, the fire was completed without delay.

It was a pretty easy game for me because I was provided with matches.

Even if I hadn’t been provided with any tools, I would have probably been able to ignite the fire with the friction method.

With my work done early, all that was left to do was to keep the fire going, and I spent the rest of the day looking at the fire in a daze.

Why! Why won’t it light!

I could hear the cries from everywhere.

Well, starting a fire takes a lot of getting used to, so no matter how much research you’ve done, whether it will work is another matter.

I cheered in my heart, ‘Hang in there!’

On the way, Akimoto and other acquaintances asked for advice, so I taught them how to do it each time.

Surprisingly, however, Ishida also came to ask me for advice.

He asked me in the same awkward way he did when we were climbing the mountain.

He’s been trying to stay away from me since the class match, but since the start of the camp, he’s been strangely approaching me. Strange.

But it didn’t feel right to just ignore him, so I taught him a few simple tips, and he left immediately.

Just what in the world was he doing?

“It’s lit. As expected.”

As I was sending Ishida off, Cheena came to check on me.

“Have you finished cooking there?”

“It’s almost done, so she asked me to check on you.”

“Well, that’s fast.”

I was expecting it to take a little longer.

Is our group good?

She walked up to me and crouched down next to me.

“Speaking of which, Yori, do you know much about stars?”

As we were staring at the fire together, she suddenly asked me something like that.

The word ‘stars’ gave me a bit of a fright, but at the same time I thought of Hosoi’s words, [You’re going to watch them with Cheena, right?]

I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but there’s no point in being vain here.

“No, I don’t know anything about it. But I do know Orion.”

“I see.”

When I told her honestly, she reacted in a subtle way.

I am disappointed… she had an expression like that.

Is she thinking about something?

After thinking for a while, Cheena opens her mouth again as if she has made up her mind.

“By the way, Yori, tomorrow’s-”

“Hey, we’re ready over here!”

But her words were interrupted by Hosoi’s voice and the others bringing the pot.

“Hey Chris, what were the two of you talking about?”

“… Nothing.”

“What’s with the scary face?”

Cheena gave Hosoi a furtive look.

Did she lose her mood?

“Well, let’s make curry for the time being. I’m starving.”

“That’s right. Let’s do that.”

I suggested before things got weird, and we resumed making curry.

The curry was made by a sensei.
