Chapter 2: Ever-changing Daily Lives

Episode 32: A Walk

After eating the delicious curry, we were free to go to the baths. The costume contest was scheduled at the end of the first day’s schedule.

I was still hungry, so I bought some coffee and a yakisoba pan at the store and ate it alone on the bench in front of the store.(E/N: pan or bread in English.)

(T/N: Yakisoba pan is a Japanese bread roll which is a great alternative to any regular sandwich and great way to use any leftover yakisoba. Yakisoba is the Japanese equivalent to the hotdog bun. [Source: chopstickchronicles.com]

I’m getting hungry xD)

The reason why I was so hungry right after lunch was because what I just ate was less than the amount of food I usually eat.

Outdoor cooking is not something that can be done in large quantities, and even the girls were eating the same amount as the boys, probably because they were hungry from exercising.

There was no way that I, a big eater, could be satisfied with that amount of food, so I was snacking like this.

I opened my phone while taking a leisurely bite of bread and found a message from Soji.

I skimmed through it and couldn’t help but furrow my brows.

Soji had sent me some information that made me both happy and annoyed.

I finished reading the message, put down my phone and looked up at the sky.

Maybe it’s finally happening.

I leaned back on the bench, alone with my thoughts.

I’ll have to tell Cheena about this.

As I was thinking of this,

“I knew you were here.”

I heard a familiar voice and looked down to see Cheena in her jersey approaching me with her hands in her jacket pockets.

She walked coolly, and her hair which was pulled back into a ponytail earlier, was now undone and back to its usual long length.

“How did you find this place?”

“There’s no way Yori only ate that much back then. You must be hungry.”

As she said this, Cheena sat down next to me.

There is a lot of space to sit on the bench, but she chose to sit so close to me that our shoulders are touching.

I felt my heart skip a beat.

If I turn my head slightly, Cheena’s head is right under my nose. (T/N: Aack! My heart!)

Her chestnut-colored hair, which is visible due to the height difference, is as thin and beautiful as ever.

As I was admiring her, Cheena suddenly turned to me and opened her mouth.

Our eyes met at close range, but we didn’t look away.

“What were you thinking about?”

“What? Ah yeah, about that…”

She gave me a good opportunity, so I started to explain the situation to her.

It’s a pain in the a*s, but there’s no guarantee that Cheena won’t be harmed, so I guess I have to tell her.

“It’s called… I’m sorry if I’m causing you any trouble because of my situation.”

“What are you talking about? I won’t allow myself to be left out of the loop.”

Her eyes were blazing with motivation.

I’m not going to make you help me….

But she didn’t seem to be worried, which was a relief.

I don’t want the fun of forest school to be diminished by problems that may or may not arise.

“Well, that’s the thing. I’ll be there as soon as you call me.”

“All right. Thank you.”

I guess this will do for now. I’ll give her that one later, just in case.

As I was clearing my head, Cheena made a suggestion.

“Hey Yori, want to go for a little walk?

“A walk? Hmm… yeah let’s do that.

There was no point in thinking about it anymore, and it was just the thing to satisfy my hunger, so I accepted it and stood up.

With a pleasant mountain breeze blowing, we started walking, exchanging quiet words.

“Hey Yori, nature is so rich here, it’s really nice.”

“I’ve always imagined Russia to have more greenery than here.”

“I only know the city as I had lived in Moscow.”

“Oh, that’s right.”

While we talked about trivial things, Cheena muttered ‘the wind feels good’.

I was a little happy to feel that we were sharing the same feeling.

After walking along the paved pathway for a while, feeling the breeze, we came to a walking path that circled around the pond.

Surrounded by trees, the path was full of greenery and the sun was just warm enough.

It must be so nice to take a nap.

“Wow. It’s beautiful, Yori.”

“Yes, it is.”

We stopped at a place where we could overlook the pond as we let out our thoughts.

Various birds were swimming comfortably on the surface of the pond where the light reflected brightly.

(T/N: If Iori was talking about birds that can swim on the water surface, he must be talking about the likes of ducks, geese, swans or pelicans.)

As we gazed at this scene for a while, my left hand was suddenly grasped.

And immediately, it changed its shape into a lover’s connection.

“Ch-Cheena?”

“Hmm? What?”

Seeing that I am surprised, Cheena deliberately played dumb.

That’s a foul y’know…

Seeing her mischievous smile, the thought of letting go of her hand was blown away from my head.

“No, it’s nothing. Let’s go.”

“Uh~.”

Feeling her warmth in the palm of my hand, I resumed my walk.

The two of us slowly made our way around the lake.

I peeked at Cheena’s profile, and she was happily staring at the greenery of the trees, then turned her eyes to me as if she noticed my gaze.

And then.

“Speaking of which…”

She opened her mouth as if she remembered something.

“Hmm? What is it?”

“Let’s watch the astronomical observation tomorrow. I’ve been studying a little about the stars.”

“What, just the two of us?”

It was about the astronomical observation to be held tomorrow night.

There was some talk about whether or not couples should watch it together.

It is unlikely that Cheena is aware of this gossip, but it is still embarrassing.

I think this is too hard for her…

“You’re the one who told me not to go out alone, right?”

“…I did.”

After all, I am no match for Cheena.
