Episode 48: Passbook

A friend of Shiori’s is coming to visit.

When I called Soji about it, it seems like he’s annoyed by it from seeing his replies. Of course, so was I.

If someone else happens to be around, both my mother and Shiori would act like cats, and there’s a possibility that I won’t be able to obtain sufficient evidence of abuse.

At present, it seems that the other team is not doing so well either.

This isn’t good.

I was lying on the bed chatting and when the debriefing ended I put down my phone. (E/N: Seems like my translator is confused about debriefing, well for you guys also, in simple terms it is the questioning regarding a task or in this case a mission. Briefing is reporting about something whether detailed or summary while debriefing is asking questions regarding that report or that particular task that was given.)

I decided to refrain from talking on the phone in the house, since there was no guarantee that Shiori wouldn’t bug the room like she did back then.

I checked around, but there was a possibility that Shiori was hiding it somewhere.

As I was absentmindedly thinking about what to do now, my phone rang again.

It was a message from Cheena.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” she asked me.

I wanted to hear her voice as well, and I would have to get some dinner.

As I walked outside to the convenience store, I connected the call to Cheena.

“Hello, Yori? Are you okay there?”

“It’s just like I said. Shiori’s friend is here. What a pain in the a*s.”

“Yes, it is…”

I chose a deserted street and exchanged a few words with Cheena.

“I’m sure she’ll be back by nightfall, and there will be a time when she’ll be free. Will you be okay? Will you have any trouble going alone?”

“Yes… I’m a little lonely but it’s okay. But there wasn’t anything in the hospital, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t worry. It doesn’t look good here either or probably for now.

I was a little happy to hear her say she was lonely, although I felt bad for Cheena.

She’s usually with me, but today she can’t see me. That’s why I miss you. If that’s what she means, then Cheena needs me.

But why am I so happy to be wanted by her? I can’t seem to figure it out. My heart is bothering me.

As I was enjoying my conversation with Cheena without knowing what it was, we suddenly talked about part-time jobs.

“Oh, by the way, payday is coming soon, isn’t it?”

“You’ve worked hard this month, haven’t you?”

“Yes, I did. Unlike Yori, I worked diligently.”

“I’m working hard, too.”

“Training, right? You don’t do much interpreting.”

“…Don’t say that.”

Compared to two months ago, we were able to talk much more freely. I’m honestly happy about that, too.

“But yeah not much was really done, though the office staff told me to make sure that my salary was deposited properly.”

“Oh, the passbook. It’s a good idea.”

However, something was bothering me during this conversation.

Passbook. …… Passbook. …… Oh!

“Yes, my bankbook!”

“What? What’s wrong, Yori?”

“Sorry, Cheena. I’ll be hanging up.”

I hung up after saying that, turned on my heel and ran home.

That’s it. I still had something my dad left for me! D**n it, I’d forgotten all about it!

I remembered something important and ran down the alley as fast as I could.

When I reached home in five minutes, I hurriedly took off my shoes and entered the living room.

There was…

“Iori? Why are you here?”

An abomination to me. My mother was sitting alone in a chair.

She must have come home during the short time I was out.

Shiori and the other five were upstairs, so it was just me and my mother here.

I was a little surprised, but it was convenient.

“What’s wrong with me being in my own house?”

“If you can go out and live on your own then this isn’t your home. And how many times did I tell you to leave the keys behind?”

“I didn’t leave without permission. My mother happily sent me away, and a minor can’t start living alone without parental consent.”

“You thought it was normal to be spoiled like that, didn’t you? I’m your parent but why don’t you listen to any words I say?”

My mother opened a paper bag on the table while making a typical poisonous remark.

Perhaps it was for shopping that she had been out so far, but a series of expensive looking clothes came out.

D**n her! How dare she talk about being a parent. The only thing that makes you a parent is that you gave birth to me.

“Tsk, okay. Mom, I’ve got one more question for you.”

“What? I’m kind of busy right now.”

“Where’s the passbook my father used to keep under my name?”

Too many New Year’s gifts from relatives, savings for my future. My father kept a passbook in each of our names – Shiori and me.

I’d only heard about it a long time ago in passing, so I completely forgot about it.

“Oh, that pass book.”

And my mother seemed to be aware of its existence.

She picked up her handbag that she had left at her feet and started rummaging through it.

Immediately, she pulled out a passbook.

“You mean this one, right? Sure, you can have it.”

“What? Oh, oh.”

To my surprise, my mother immediately handed it to me.

I thought she would definitely play dumb, but I was surprised.

Anyway, I took it and opened it with trepidation.

Cold sweat poured down my forehead.

Why did this thing come out of her bag and she gave it to me right away?

Even before I opened the passbook, I had a feeling I knew the answer.

『Deposit balance: 15 yen』

“I just used it up today. It’s too much trouble to manage, so I’ll give it to you.”

“Curse you! You crappy effin human!!!”

I was shouting at the top of my lungs a moment later when my emotions beyond anger exploded.

My father worked hard and saved a lot for me, and this rotten woman just… !!!!!

“You! All of my father’s hard work, hardship, kindness, and love – all of it! Did you pour all of those in your stupid accessories?! Huh? !”

This is the most intense emotion I’ve ever felt. I can feel the blood rushing to my head. It hurts. I feel like I’m going to explode.

But I don’t care about that right now.

“Don’t listen to him (his father). You’re just giving me back the money I’ve been paying you. There are a lot of families like that, and I think it’s only fair.”

“So, you’re going to demand the same amount of money from Shiori, right?”

“She’s given me so much, and I’m guaranteed the pleasure she’s going to give me. It would be wrong of me as a parent to ask for more than that.”

“F**k you!”

Blagssssh! There was a loud sound. I looked to the side and saw that the table had been flipped over.

A little while later, I realized that I had thrown it over in a fit of rage. No, judging from the pain in my leg, I must have kicked it.

“What do you think you’re doing?! This table is a precious thing filled with memories of our family!”

“I’m not included in that family! The only family you have is that vixen!”

“I hope you’re not referring to Shiori as a vixen! I won’t allow you to be jealous of Shiori just because you, yourself, is a failure!”

My mother finally became enraged by my words.

However, she was angry about the fact that I had said something bad about Shiori but didn’t deny the fact that she doesn’t think of me as a family.

Okay, that’s enough.

“Fine, I’m not coming back here again, as you wish! Then, I’ll give you a nice future at the very least!”

With that, I headed for the door.

On the way, I slammed the picture frame next to the TV onto the floor and stomped on it.

“What on earth are you doing?!”

“Mom, what’s wrong? Are you alright?!”

I walk out of the house, listening to the voices of my half-crazed mother and Shiori rushing to her.

I didn’t want to be in that place for even one more second.

(T/N: I don’t think anyone can stand Iori’s mother’s behavior. I mean, why would you spend the money your husband saved up for your son? What more, acting as if it was only justifiable to pay back what she had done to her son, right? This chapter really gave me a belly full of anger *Bunny making angry noises* )

A/N: This is a serious story. I think the contradictory words and actions of the parents gave a nice touch of toxicity to the story.

I can’t believe it, but it seems like these toxic parents are real!

And I used to post every day until today, but due to lack of stock and Marmite, I think I’ll be posting every few days from now on.

I apologize for the inconvenience, but I hope you can understand.
