Amber didn’t care what people said about her. She was perfectly happy for Jenia to tend to her needs, but Amber didn’t want Jenia to receive any more glares in addition to what she already dealt with.

“Sir Betrand?”

“Good morning, Mistress.”

It was Dennis.

Amber stared at Dennis in surprise. Though he was wearing the formal attire for knights, he had neither armor nor weapons.

Realizing that Amber was looking at him up and down, Dennis shrugged his shoulders.

“I’ve decided to stay behind.”

“Why did you decide against joining the subjugation forces?” Amber heard from Heinreich yesterday that Dennis was quite a talented knight who carried a vital role for the knights.

‘And on top of that, he was definitely amongst the rank and file of the forces yesterday.’ Amber remembered very clearly seeing Dennis heavily armed and standing by in the cold midnight air of the drill hall.

“Well…”

“Betrand.” Right as Dennis was about to respond, Kalix, who had already walked far ahead, called out in a stern voice.

“Just because you aren’t participating in the current subjugation team doesn’t mean you can move as you please.”

“My apologies, Your Excellency.” Dennis gave a strict bow of his head towards him and hurriedly ran towards the knights standing in the grounds to take care of the horses. The knights that weren’t joining the subjugation still needed to help with the preparations for the sortie, keeping all the knights busy.

Because of that, Amber couldn’t hear why he had been excluded from going out into battle.

‘It felt like he had something he needed to say to me as well.’ But Dennis no longer looked back towards Amber. He couldn’t risk another reprimand after being told off by Kalix.

“Preparations are all done!” Heinreich, who was directing the preparation for the forces to leave, yelled.

All the preparations had come to a completion.

Kalix and Jeit shared a few words before spurring the knights. Kalix went to each knight one by one to give them words of support and a command to be victorious in battle.  Unlike his usual interactions with Amber, Kalix showed a surprising proficiency as the reassured each knight.

The knights all stared at Kalix with trust, respect, and loyalty.

Amber stared at Kalix with surprise at the image of him functioning as the perfect sovereign of the land. ‘He’s still so young. I’m sure he’s never gone into battle after becoming the Duke, yet he’s already so experienced.’ Of course he must have participated in various small battles as the Duke’s son, but they would have been a far cry from actually being the Duke and giving orders directly to the knights. Even so, the knights all acknowledged Kalix as their master.

Even if word of the proficiency of the Thales swordsmanship never spread, Kalix’s charisma was enough to lead soldiers like the ones in front of him.

As Kalix finished, it was now Bella’s turn. Though Bella had come here to see the knights off voluntarily, it was still clear that she wasn’t particularly welcoming in any of her actions.

“I believe that all of you will bring victory like usual.” Bella ended her work with just a few conventional words.

Even the knights didn’t look particularly glad to see Bella. Each and every one of them looked glum.

‘Was the relationship between the knights and Bella this bad?’ Amber tried to think back to the memories in her previous life, but there was nothing in particular that popped up. The knights were out for battle so often that any information at all about the knights was very rare.

As Bella stepped down, Amber stepped up in turn and stood in front of the knights.

All of the knights stared at young Amber with curiosity and caution. Though they didn’t look as glum as they did for Bella, it was clearly not a favorable reaction. It was obvious they would be like this.

But there was just one person, Dennis, who looked at Amber with a kind expression on his face.

However, Dennis by himself couldn’t change the mood of all the knights. Sir Jeit especially was not hiding away any of his vigor and stared at Amber with a powerful gaze.
