“You’ve really grown, son. You really did…” his dad replied, looking into the distance.

“Huh? Are you ok, dad?” Narias had never seen his father have that kind of expression on his face before.

“But you still need to become stronger, son. With the way things are going…” Lorenard sighed, rubbing his forehead with his hand.

“What are you talking about, dad?” Narias had shivers run down his spine. He had never seen his father act the way he did now.

“Oh, nothing. Don’t worry about it,” Lorenard had finally turned to Narias to show his usual, smug grin.

“Tch… Why did you call me over then?” Narias frowned at his father.

“To talk about your girlfriends, what else?” His father gave his son a glare. “All four of them.”

“Eek! F… four?” Narias averted his gaze to look the other way. “W… what do you mean… four? I have…”

- ‘Smack.’ – Narias was smacked on the head.

“Ouch! What was that for?” He rubbed the spot where Lorenard’s hand landed on.

“Don’t give me that innocent look, you, women magnet. Did you think I wouldn’t find out about you and Layla? You sneaky dog. You could’ve told me,” Lorenard made a face as if he was betrayed by a friend.

“Tell you what, exactly?” Narias face became red. He pretended to wipe the sweat of his face, then had another drink from his glass.

“Come on, you know what I mean.” Narias’s father had the same cheesy grin he usually has when he teases his son. “So, how far did the two of you go?”

“Cough…” Narias choked on his water. Instead of answering his father’s question however, Narias tried to stall for time. “H… how did you find out?”

“Hah, easy,” Lorenard smirked. “When Layla came back from El’Roonst, she had this red butterfly hair accessory on her head. She would’ve never bought one herself. I instantly knew that was your doing.”

“R… right… You got me, dad,” Narias put on a silly smile, being happy his father knew only that much.

“So, did you see her naked?” His dad was acting like some pervert.

“Cough, cough… D… daaad!” It made Narias freak out.

“Ahahaha!” Lorenard started laughing wholeheartedly. “Relax son. I’m just messing with you.”

“Is that so? Geez…” Narias threw a glare at his dad, before standing up to pour some more water for himself.

“But on a serious note. I’m really proud of you, son.” Lorenard had that longing look in his eyes again.

“That I have so many girlfriends?” Narias tried to be sarcastic. “Ouch…”

- ‘Smack.’ – which cost him another smack on the head.

“For surpassing me and growing so strong, you dummy,” his father stated in a serious tone.

“Surpassing you? But I’ve lost… again,” Narias was rubbing his head again.

“As if. Do you know how capable I was at your age? Wait, don’t answer. I’ll feel even more embarrassed if you say it out loud,” Lorenard half frowned, crossing his arms in front of him. “To tell you the truth, Wind Blade Vortex was the last trick I could use against you. I won only because it took you by surprise. I can bet you’d have a solution how to counter it the next time we duel. You won, son. There’s nothing else I could teach anymore.”

“Dad…” Narias was finally starting to get what his father wanted to tell him.

“Listen son, you have to really take care of your girlfriends. And I mean, you need to take a really good care of them,” his father gave him the most serious look yet.

“Y… yes, ok.” Narias responded, feeling perplexed at how serious his father was.

“I mean it. You were such a shut-in when you were growing up. Your mother and I were being worried so much you’d have a hard time finding a girlfriend. That’s why I was pushing you to get one. You have no idea how happy we were when we read about it in your letter. I had tears in my eyes when I learned you had finally found a girlfriend. That was the best day of my life,” Lorenard looked like he was about to cry.

“Really? The best day of your life was to learn I started dating someone?” Somehow, Narias wasn’t willing to believe that.

“Ah, well, no. The best day in my life was when your mother agreed to become my girlfriend.” Narias’s dad changed his tune quickly.

“Humph,” Narias frowned at his dad, but suddenly his frown was replaced by a smug expression on his face. “Speaking of which, how many girlfriends did you have?”

“None. Your mother was my first and only girlfriend I ever had, and have.” His father answered calmly.

“Huh? Really? But I thought…” Narias didn’t expect to hear that kind of answer.

“What? You thought I was chasing skirts when I was young just because I like to tease you now and then? I mean, I was… but no girl would even look at me at that time. I was such a loser,” his dad’s face changed to a sad one as he was remembering his young school days.

“Loser? But you’re so awesome, dad,” Narias couldn’t believe his dad would talk about him in such a way.

“Hah, thank you, son. That means a lot to me.” Narias’s words had cheered Lorenard up. He patted Narias on the head lovingly this time. “But seriously, when I was your age, I was a real nobody. I was bad at my studies and I was bad at using magic. That’s why I said you had surpassed me. Honestly, you had surpassed me by a lifetime.”

Lifetime? Well… Narias rubbed his cheek with one finger, averting his eyes away.

“But… you’ve changed. My mom always tells me that you started studying and training to become better, and that’s why she married you,” Narias insisted.

“Yes, I did. And it was all thanks to Alvina. But you are wrong about one thing, son,” Lorenard looked away, his face painting a pleasant smile as his mind drifted to some distant memory.

“About what, dad?” Narias wondered.

“Your mom didn’t marry me. She was the one who took me as her husband,” Narias’s father had the last sip from his glass before placing it back on the table.

“My mom… took you as her husband? Wait… you don’t mean…” His dad was dropping bomb after bomb on Narias’s lap today.

“Of course. I was a loser, remember? I had nothing going on for me, and I was risking to be expelled from the academy too. If not for your mother, I’d probably be some homeless beggar right now,” Lorenard grunted, shiver running down his spine and Narias could see it. “I might talk big and act tough, but I’m living each day as if it is my last. My last with your mother that is. She could’ve chosen any guy to be with instead of me. Or multiple guys to be more exact. Boys from high upstart families were courting her all the time. She was one of the most popular girls in the whole academy and the most beautiful too. Better yet, she had never considered to have other boyfriends… or husbands after we got married. I still can’t believe how lucky I was for her to choose me.”

“Other boyfriends or husbands?” Narias had a cold chill run down his spine, trying to imagine having multiple men live with his mother. Coming from the world where polygamy wasn’t a thing would’ve been very difficult to accept it. Eeh… That… would’ve been the worst.

“Don’t tell me you hadn’t figured that part out yourself?” Narias’s father gave him a glare, furrowing his eyebrows in disbelief.

“What? How could I have known? In all honesty, I always thought you were just making fun of me about finding multiple girlfriends,” Narias frowned, looking away.

“Are you saying it never occurred to you why I was never invited to go to the social gatherings together with your mom?” Lorenard grunted, sounding almost disappointed.

“Oh, I…” that forced Narias to think.

In all honesty, Narias had never pondered what were the reasons his dad never went to the social gatherings. He always thought his dad was busy and that his mom was invited by her female friends to come and socialize. There were always some men at the social parties too, which he thought were someone else’s partners. But now that he thought about it, there were multiple occasions when some of the men they’d meet would talk to his mom in a way he found distasteful. There were a few rare incidents when he’d hear a man tell his mother, in a very direct way even, to leave her husband, Narias’s dad, and become their wife instead. The worst part was, the same person would have one or several women accompanying him too.

Narias had never took his dad’s teasing seriously. In his mind, his parents were his parents. They were married to each other and he could see they loved each other very much too. It’s not like that he hadn’t encountered, or noticed, other people he’d meet being surrounded by more than one opposite sex patrons. But in his monogamy type mindset, he either dismissed it as distasteful and disrespectful or simply ignore it entirely.

Starting going to school had changed his perspective on that part. After all, he had three official girlfriends already. Layla and Belinda weren’t his official girlfriends. Layla was the first woman he fell for, knowingly or not, and getting together with Belinda was more of an accident than anything else. Of course, if Narias and Belinda hadn’t been attracted to one another, none of the Dream World stuff would’ve happened, or continued to happen.

“You see, your mother choosing me over others had cost her dearly…” Lorenard resumed telling his son about his mother. “…but she still stuck with me no matter what, and for that, I continue loving her unconditionally.”

“Dad…” Narias became extremely curious to learn more about his mother, but the expression on his dad’s face told him it would be wrong to ask about it now. He let it go, hoping his father, or his mother, will tell him about it when the time is right.

“So, on that note, you need to take care of your girlfriends. All four of them. You need to be straight and fair with each one of them,” Lorenard was about to add something else, but noticed his son was dozing off. “Hey, are you listening to what I am saying, Narias?”

“Ah, yes dad, I am. It’s just that…” Narias scratched his cheek with one finger, looking away.

“It’s just that… what?” His father gave him the look.

“There’s five…” he said, still looking away.

“Five? What do you mean, fi- Wait, what?!” Lorenard jumped from his seat. “You mean, you have FIVE girlfriends?!”

“Settle down, dad…” Narias started to sweat, afraid someone might hear them. Fortunately, the training grounds they were at were situated remotely, away from the living quarters or the fields where people worked.

“Ah, sorry, sorry.” His father sat back down, sliding closer to his son, grinning from ear to ear. “So, who’s the fifth one?”

“Well, she’s a teacher at the academy, but…” Narias was about to tell him when Lorenard exclaimed loudly, interrupting him.

“What?! A teacher?! You had definitely outgrown your old man. I’m so proud of you, son. Sob…” Narias’s father started to sob. Whether it was an act or for real was yet to be confirmed.

“Come on, dad. You don’t have to be so dramatic about it. Besides, it’s complicated. I can’t tell you who it is, because we are keeping it a secret ourselves. There are some things going on at the academy and I don’t want to cause any trouble our relationships might cause her,” Narias explained without giving the details.

“Right, I see.” Lorenard seemed to take his son’s words seriously. “Still, five girlfriends, and it hasn’t been a full year yet. I can’t hold in my tears… Sob… You’re doing awesome son.”

“Well, actually…” Narias rolled his eyes innocently, not knowing whether he should tell him about a certain someone or not.

“Huh? What?” His father was quick to notice Narias was still hiding something. His crying had stopped instantaneously. Lorenard rammed his arms at his waist, turning to face his son fully. “Hey, is there something you aren’t telling me? I’m your father, I should know everything.”

“Well, we’re not dating or anything, but… there’s another woman who… who said she’d like to be my girlfriend.” Narias told him.

“Wait, woman? Is she another teacher?” His dad wanted clarification.

“No, but she works at the academy. Huh? Eww… daaad…” Narias sneered, seeing his dad’s face up close.

“Ahem… sorry. You were saying?” Lorenard sat back straight, coughing at his hand while putting on a serious listener act.

“Sigh…” Narias shook his head. “Anyway, she’s a very beautiful and attractive woman, and she loves to tease me too. However, she’s been very kind and helpful lately, and started to enjoy her provocative teasing. She even kissed me the last time I saw her, and it felt like she did it because she truly likes me, but that just made things much more difficult for me. I really can’t get used to having multiple girlfriends. In all seriousness, I never planned to have multiple girlfriends. I mean, I don’t really know why they want to… Huh?”

Hey! Not again, dad. Narias squirmed in his feet, seeing his dad being a mess again.

“Daaad…” Narias made a face again.

“Ah, sorry, sorry. That is… What was your sixth girlfriend’s name again?” Lorenard became as sweet as honey.

“Not telling you. And she’s not my girlfriend… yet,” Narias’s face blushed, but he turned away so his dad wouldn’t see it.

“Oh, come on. I won’t tell anyone, I promise.” His father was basically begging him.

“You’ll tell my mom,” Narias knew his dad would.

“Ah, yes. But she’s your mom. She should know about your girlfriends too.” His dad made a fair point.

“Yes, but I should be the one to tell her,” Narias responded, making it clear he won’t budge.

“Hmph…” Lorenard pretended he was hurt emotionally, but Narias knew his tricks by now.

“I think it’s time to go back. I need to take a bath and eat. Oh, and I have a gift for mom too.” Narias remembered.

“A gift? What gift?” His father wanted to know. “Hey, what about me? Do you have a gift for me too?”

“Well, the gift for my mom will be a gift for you too,” Narias had spent almost all of his money to buy the dress for his mom, so hadn’t bought anything for his dad. But he knew his father will totally enjoy seeing Alvina in her new dress.

“So, what are we waiting for? Come on, son, let’s go,” Lorenard was marching forward already.

“What? Hey, wait up, dad! Geez…” Narias shook his head, but at the same time, was feeling happy he had a chance to spend some private time with his dad.
