Pick a Pendant

Han Qilu chooses to look ahead and concentrate on driving rather than listen to An Chuxia.

They arrive in front of a high-end jewelry store quickly. In all honesty, there is no parking in front of the establishment, but would they actually ticket Han Qilu if he parked there?

“Wouldn’t it be inappropriate to park here?”

“Get out.” Han Qilu doesn’t listen to her concern. Instead, he exits the car. She quickly follows pursuit.

Why aren’t people afraid to get tickets? And why is the Emperor moving faster than the eunuch?

“Young master Han Qilu? Why are you here? If we knew you were coming, we would’ve come to meet you!” A well-dressed man says upon meeting them.

An Chuxia looks up at the plaque on the jewelry store that reads “Brilliant Love” in glittering words. But those words aren’t the important ones on the plaque; it is the Han word on the lower right hand corner that matters.

No wonder why Qilu wasn’t afraid of parking in front of the store. If he brought out a bed to sleep on by the doorway, event then the employees wouldn’t object.

“Tyrant.” An Chuxia mutters the word under her breath.

Han Qilu happens to hear her. He turns around and whispers to her, “Congratulations, you’re the tyrant’s meimei.”

Again, meimei!

Han Qilu’s habit is so frustrating, she might as well not speak.

“Does the price matter?” the man in the suit asks. “Does the young master want to personally inspect?”

“Don’t be nervous.” Han Qilu pulls out the pendant from his jacket pocket and hands it over. “I’m here to buy, not inspect.”

The man heaves a sigh of relief. Then, he enthusiastically asks Han Qilu, “What kind of jewelry would you like to buy? Would it be a ring?”

The man subconsciously looks at An Chuxia. Since he saw Han Qilu drag her in, not to mention she has been in articles in the paper, she can be considered a minor celebrity. It isn’t hard to recognize her. The Brilliant Love staff make sure to accommodate the master’s buying needs.

“It doesn’t matter.” Han Qilu hands the bauble to the man with a stubble.

“It doesn’t?” The man quickly looks at the item placed in his palm, and sees the gold smiley face. It is compact, but inexpensive.

Does master Qilu want a suitable chain for this pendant?

As the man conjectures, Han Qilu says, “I want the same material, but a better looking one.”

“Oh, we don’t have pendants this small, but I think we have a smiley face pendant that’s larger than this? Let me check upstairs,” the man cautiously and respectfully states.

“Whatever, as long as it’s better looking than that one,” Han Qilu says it like a petulant child that she had to suppress her laughter.

Is he trying to impress her? It’s illogical for him to do something so unnecessary.

“I’m off to find the piece. Young master, miss, please have a seat.” The man shows them to two luxurious chairs with an expensive coffee table around the corner. Then, he commands two people to bring in some tea for the guests before leaving for the second floor.

Jade and various precious stones are displayed on the left side counter in the store. On the right are precious beads like lobular red sandalwood, yellow rosewood, and so forth.

On the second floor, the shop sells specific jewelry, including gold.

“Do you think this looks good?” Xiang Mankuai looks into the mirror as she holds the earrings up to her lobes. She looks to her manager, Chaijie, for her opinion.

Chaijie clasps her hands against her chest before shaking her head decisively. “It’s too expensive. It’s not a right fit for you.”

“What about this one?” Mankuai points to a string of white gold snake bone chain with tassel. It curves around the ear line, and it shines when it catches light, enough to catch someone’s eye.

Chaijie decisively shakes her head again. “You aren’t walking down the red carpet with that.”

Deflated, Mankuai frowns and carefully picks up other trinkets. “This, this, and this. Put them in your best boxes, but don’t seal them. Hurry, don’t meander.”

The sound of quick movement catches Mankuai’s attention. The man is moving so fast, his neck is bright red. Who can make this man rush like that?

Mankuai recovers from staring, and continues to mind her ear accessories.

“Pick this.” Chaijie points to a pair of star-shaped studded earrings. The crescent moon adjacent to the star makes it chic, but in Mankuai’s eyes, the jewelry is too common.

“Chaijie, do you need your eyes checked?” Mankuai is ashamed to say, “This isn’t my style!”

“What style are you talking about? You’re wearing it to school, not the red carpet premiere. Now hold up those studs!”

“Well… .” Mankuai shakes her head reluctantly.

After wrapping up the pair of earrings, the store attendant asks, “Miss, can you sign your name?”

Despite being impatient, Mankuai holds her temper in and smiles. “Of course.”

The attendant immediately hands her the slip of paper. Swish, swish! she quickly scribbles her signature.

Just then, she hears a staff member say, “Can’t you move faster? The more you procrastinate, the more you’ll offend young master Qilu!”

The associate is puzzled as to why Mankuai dropped the pen.

Chaijie sees this, and hastens to pick the pen off the floor and hand it to the associate. “I’m sorry. Kindly finish the transaction.”

The associate moves to the side.

“Excuse me… .”

The other store associate is impatient, but he stops and changes his composure to something more respectful. “Yes, miss. How can I help you?”

“I just have to ask, are you running an errand for Han Qilu?”

Should it be considered fate? She barely contains her joy within. She came to pick out a pair of earrings, and it results in having to meet Han Qilu at the same time.

“Yes, young master is in the first floor waiting room. Why?” He didn’t get to finish his statement since Mankuai has already run down the steps.

The staff is puzzled. Then, the associate says, “Manager, the package is wrapped.”

“Follow me.” The manager recovers before heading down the stairs.

“This is bitter… .” An Chuxia spits her tongue out as she sips the tea. She didn’t know tea can be like this.

Han Qilu can’t help but laugh after seeing An Chuxia’s expression. “This tea costs a thousand a pound. You can’t just spit it out. You might as well have spat money.”

“It seems I’m doomed to drinking inexpensive tea.” An Chuxia puts the cup down. It was then she sees a familiar silhouette coming down the steps.

Surprised, she wonders why Xiang Mankuai is here.

“Han Qilu!” Xiang Mankuai rushes up from behind Qilu. Her voice startles him, but he already knows of her presence from the scent of her perfume.

Mankuai hooks her arm around his tapered neck and asks, “Are you taking me to dinner? I’m hungry!”

It’s technically too early for dinner, but it’s late enough that they can have a meal. He just cannot refuse. “Where do you want to eat?”

As the couple converse in front of her, An Chuxia bunches the side of her skirt. Her complexion turns ugly.

“Oh, hi, An Chuxia, you’re here, too?” Mankuai pretends to have just noticed her.

“Young master, I picked out the pendants you might want to choose from,” the manager announces as several staff members bring out a dozen red boxes and lay them on the table.

“What’s this?” Mankuai looks at An Chuxia. “Han Qilu, you’re not picking something for her, are you?”

Han Qilu stiffens, but he nods. “I am.”

Anger quickly flares in Mankuai’s heart. She faces Han Qilu with a pinched face. “It’s quite normal for a brother to buy something for his sister. An Chuxia, take advantage of this moment. After all, this opportunity won’t come too often.”

Mankuai maliciously side eyes An Chuxia.

An Chuxia doesn’t witness her malice, but she deliberately pretends to think her statement as innocent. “Thank you for the reminder.”

“You’re welcome,” Mankuai says sweetly before bringing her face close to Han Qilu’s. “I’m so hungry, Han Qilu. Take me out to eat. Anyway, An Chuxia can pick her own favorite [trinket], right?”

“If you want to go, just go,” An Chuxia mutters as she looks at the pendants. “I can do this alone.”
