Chapter 12: T’is ‘ain ‘s killin’ me

Since that post with the row of puppies, Qiu YiBai hasn’t updated her Weibo for a few days.

The main reason was that she had no time. There was a problem that came up with a Japanese partner, and Qiu YiBai immediately left with the related sales associates the night she received the message, and they still haven’t returned.

For five days, Shen NingXin didn’t even see a glimpse of her shadow.

At least she was basically finished with the work at hand. After the end of the month passed, the office recovered its idleness, and except for some necessary tasks, all that’s left were fun and games.

Under this carefree state, Shen NingXin unknowingly gained a few pounds.

“What did I say,” Wang Xi smiled and chatted with Shen NingXi as she ate some melon seeds, “Doesn’t our company raise people? Xiao Shen, did you gain some weight?”

Shen NingXin was startled and unconsciously touched her face.

Was it that obvious?

She was about 165 cm tall (~5’5″), and even if she gained a little weight, she still weighed under 100 pounds. At first glance, she had a very well-proportioned body. Her waist was a waist and her legs were legs. Nothing about her looked chubby.

She didn’t know how anybody could tell.

Puzzled, she heard Wang Xi add, “I accidentally saw you when you weighed yourself by the door this morning.”

Her voice was quite loud, and several people looked in their direction after her voice fell. They had a kind smile on their faces, as though gaining weight was something no one could escape from.

This was too difficult.

Shen NingXin smiled and laughed along with her, but her cheeks began to turn red.

How about she . . . start losing weight from today.

This was just a small incident.

Before work ended, Zhao Jie had something suddenly come up and requested to leave half an hour early. Before she left, she told Shen NingXin to help her watch over the emails from their Indian customers.

“Alright.” Shen NingXin nodded and smiled as she said goodbye to her, “Take care.”

“Okay then. Thanks for your help.” Zhao Jie waved her hand and left like a gust of wind.

Shen NingXin stared in the direction she left in for a moment, then returned her gaze to the email inbox.

The last email was from four hours ago. After the other party explained that they needed to verify the model to be purchased, they still haven’t responded.

At this moment, there was less than half an hour before work ended, and Shen NingXin thought that there probably wouldn’t be a response until tomorrow.

But what timing.

Just three minutes before work ended, she received an email telling her that they’ve attached a file containing the model they wanted to purchase and to send the contract as soon as possible.

Since she saw it, it wasn’t as though she could ignore it. Thus, Shen NingXin clicked on the attachment.

She then almost passed away.

Unlike the majority of customers, this one wanted only a small number of glass beads for each order. At a glance, there were more than a dozen types, each amounting to only two or three tons, and the price of each type was also different.

Just calculating the price and quantity took Shen NingXin a lot of time.

By the time she finally managed to finish, the office was already empty.

Fortunately, she had already gotten used to working overtime after these past few days, so she hurriedly made a contract, and after printing, stamping, and scanning, she finally sent it over.

Immediately afterward, she prepared the production and packing list in advance for later use.

Looking up again, 20 minutes had passed.

She took a deep breath and exercised her neck. Shen NingXin then picked up her bag to go home. Just as she arrived at the elevator door, before she could press the button, she met Qiu YiBai, who had just returned from her business trip.

“. . . . . .”

The elevator really was their meeting spot.

She wasn’t even surprised at this point.

Shen NingXin immediately smiled and greeted her, “You’re back now, President Qiu.”

“En.” Probably not expecting that she’d still see Shen NingXin at this time, a look of surprise ran across Qiu YiBai’s face. “Why haven’t you left yet?”

Shen NingXin responded honestly, “I had to make a document right before work ended, and it took a while. I’m just about to go . . .”

Before she could finish speaking, she saw Qiu YiBai signal at her. “Come here and help me with something. I’ll only use up a little bit of your time.”

This scene was familiar.

Afraid that she’d write her up on Weibo again, Shen NingXin could only nod. “Alright.”

She didn’t have any plans after work anyway.

She followed behind Qiu YiBai into the office, then took a seat, organizing the files while watching Qiu YiBai work from the corner of her eyes.

After about 20 minutes, she finished sorting out all the files.

Qiu YiBai scanned through them roughly and nodded slightly in satisfaction. She then took out the travel bag she took with her on her trip.

She fumbled around before finally taking out a large bag of chocolates.

It was a brand Shen NingXin had seen on the Internet before. A single piece was already quite expensive, so she wondered how much all of this cost.

“I bought too much,” she said and casually pushed it closer to her on the table as though she didn’t care, “You can help get rid of it for me.”

It couldn’t possibly be to thank her for helping organize files again, right?

Qiu YiBai, you don’t have to be so polite!

Shen NingXin was silent for a moment and finally shook her head, indicating that she didn’t want it.

She just decided to lose weight today and really didn’t want to give up just for these chocolates.

Plus, she did feel kind of embarrassed.

A few days ago, she just remembered to use the card Qiu YiBai gave her, and after checking the bill, she realized she still had 1,000 left it there. It was days worth of her salary.

So this time, she really couldn’t accept it.

Not receiving the answer she wanted, Qiu YiBai paused, the atmosphere suddenly falling silent.

The two stood in a stalemate for some moments before Qiu YiBai finally moved. She actually stretched out her hand again to push the bag of chocolate forward. She even raised her eyebrows, signaling her to get it.

Shen NingXin still shook her head.

“Leave then,” Qiu YiBai finally said, “And close the door.”

Her tone seemed quite normal; she probably wasn’t mad.

Shen NingXin nodded and left after saying goodbye.

She didn’t notice Qiu YiBai silently taking out her phone and opening her Weibo with a cold expression.

“. . . . . .”

By the time Shen NingXin reacted, it was already the next day’s afternoon.

Qiu YiBai brought back many things for her employees from her trip abroad, most of which were chosen according to each person’s preference, such as local specialties, fine crafts, skincare, and so on.

She asked Assistant Han to pass them out, but there was nothing for Shen NingXin.

Assistant Han found it strange, so when she walked by Shen NingXin’s workstation, she quietly asked, “Did you make President Qiu angry?”

She didn’t think she did.

Just as Shen NingXin wanted to shake her head, she suddenly remembered the chocolate from last night.

Turns out that was just one of the gifts President Qiu brought back; it wasn’t for her specifically.

Upon realizing this, Shen NingXin’s expression changed a little and she slowly nodded.

Assistant Han raised her hand and gently patted her shoulder, then comforted, “You should find a time and apologize to her.”

After she said that, she continued to pass out the rest of the things, leaving Shen NingXin to sit there in a daze. After a while, as if just remembering something, she took out her phone and slowly opened Weibo.

As expected, there was an update—

“After all the effort I put into bringing back that bag of chocolates, Shen NingXin didn’t even want it!

I’m angry, I’m going to eat it all and won’t leave a single one for her!”

“. . . . . .”

Shen NingXin turned off her phone and raised her eyes. She then discovered that the bag of chocolates was indeed positioned right next to Qiu YiBai.

She stood up a little and was even able to catch a glimpse of a few empty wrappers thrown into the trashcan next to her.

Two words soon popped into her mind: Oh no.

She didn’t know how many days Qiu YiBai would bear a grudge for again.

Reality proved that she was right. After that day, Qiu YiBai started to avoid her, and at the same time, that bag of chocolates became flatter and flatter.

Shen NingXin couldn’t find a good chance to reconcile with her, so the two could only remain in a stalemate.

It wasn’t until the third day that she suddenly discovered Qiu YiBai was wearing a mask.

It had been raining for several days in a room, the weather changing drastically. Many people in the office caught a cold, the noise of sneezing present everywhere.

Shen NingXin guessed that she probably got sick, too, so she decided to use this opportunity to ask for peace. She even gave her cold medicine along the way.

But for some reason, Qiu YiBai only gave her one look before turning away. She didn’t even say anything and only nodded her head, as though her words were some sort of gold.

She’s still angry ah.

Shen NingXin sighed and returned to her workstation in disappointment. Just as she was thinking of another method, she suddenly received a file from Qiu YiBai.

It was a form, followed by the sentence: “Zhao Jie is currently busy, help check it for her, then send it to me later.”

She’s actually talking to her.

Shen NingXin was overjoyed, the weight now off of her mind. She carefully and swiftly examined the form, then sent it back.

Before long, Qiu YiBai replied a not bad.

Shen NingXin hurriedly responded with a smiley face, then got up happily and went to the bathroom.

Up until she was about to exit her stall, she kept thinking that this crybaby was angry for a long time this time. It seemed like she needed to be more careful in the future and always try to consider what else Qiu YiBai could mean.

As she thought, just as she was about to take a turn, all of a sudden she saw Qiu YiBai hurriedly come in. She first looked around, and after finding that there was no one around, she stood in front of the mirror and raised her hand to touch her face under the mask.

Before Shen NingXin could greet her, she suddenly heard her talk to herself. She didn’t know what language she was speaking in and took a while before she finally figured it out.

It was a not very standard Chinese, light and fluttering, and combined with the aggravated look in her eyes, it had quite the flavor to it.

“I didn’ even ea’ ‘hat much, why i’ i’ ‘o ‘ollen . . .”

“T’is ‘ain ‘s killin’ me!”

It was pitiful yet funny at the same time.

Shen NingXin finally understood why this person wouldn’t speak.

Turns out it wasn’t because she was sick but because she ate too much chocolate out of anger and got a toothache, so she literally couldn’t talk . . .

Why was she still working then, go to the dentist!

In case it was unclear:

“I didn’t even eat that much, why is it so swollen . . .”

“This pain is killing me!”
