Chapter 31: What exactly did you do?

This person always became so gentle inadvertently.

Shen NingXin stared at the bottle of orange juice in a daze for a long while before finally holding it tightly in her hand. She then ran a few steps to catch up with Qiu YiBai’s pace.

A particularly strange feeling spread in her heart.

It was warm and a little itchy, like a feather lightly scratching the tip of her heart.

It made her feel content.

So content that a smile bloomed on her face without her realizing it.

“President Qiu, are you not going to drink it?” she said, her voice softening by a lot unconsciously, “Why did you only buy one bottle?”

“I’m not going to drink it,” Qiu YiBai answered as soon as her voice fell, “This is something only kids drink, I’m not drinking it.”

Yes, yes, yes, you only drink BaiSuiShan.

Shen NingXin couldn’t help but let out a light chuckle when she heard her words, then she continued to insist, “Why don’t I share half of mine with you later?”

Her eyes were sparkling when she said this.

And maybe it was because Shen NingXin also had a little alcohol, but her footsteps were obviously lighter than usual, and her state wasn’t as cautious and serious as she seemed at the company.

When the two stood together, for some reason, they didn’t look like they had a boss and subordinate relationship.

But rather seemed like two very close friends.

Qiu YiBai looked at her, and after a while, she seemed to have thought of something and actually replied a light “En” back.

Her pace also slowed down unconsciously, and an idea gradually emerged from the bottom of her heart.

She suddenly thought that . . . it actually felt kind of nice to take walks like this occasionally.

A few days later, Shen NingXin was promoted to an official employee.

She had performed well throughout her internship, and after becoming an official employee, her salary increased by a lot and she also had better benefits than before.

At the same time, under Zhao Jie’s aid, she was also finally able to start contacting customers.

Although her workload increased, she still felt happy. Right after she finished the work at hand, she took out the calculator from the side and started doing calculations, wondering if she would be able to save a lot of money every month from now on.

She actually had always had a dream.

Although at her current level, it was still a long way before she could realize her dream, she believed that as long as she kept working hard, she’d achieve it one day.

She wanted to have a house of her own.

It didn’t need to be really big, just enough for her to live alone. The walls would be painted in her favorite color and the inside would be filled with her favorite furniture.

Even the kitchen needed to be furnished prettily, where it’d be enjoyable to cook in.

Only then would there be a feeling of a home.

She had always wanted a home.

Thinking about this, Shen NingXin opened her account book and wrote in her money-saving plan for this month.

In the middle of her writing, when she raised her eyes, she suddenly saw Qiu YiBai pass by with a cup of coffee.

She was probably worried about the exhibition that was occurring in two days, her expression looking a little unhappy, as though she’d call someone over to scold them at any moment.

At this moment, almost no one in the office dared to raise their eyes, except Shen NingXin.

The two happened to make eye contact.

Shen NingXin froze with the pen in her hand and was silent for a while. Just as she was about to say something, Qiu YiBai spoke first.

“Do your work well,” she said, “Otherwise I’ll deduct from your salary.”

It was a sentence that usually sounded so unyielding, but she said it so weakly right now.

She was obviously not in a good state.

Seeing this, Shen NingXin was a little taken aback, but before she could say anything, Qiu YiBai had already turned around and left.

It seemed like she was busy dealing with something again, and the sound of a phone call soon came from her office.

Shen NingXin didn’t pay attention to the content of the call, and after listening for a while, she only had a general idea, but a sudden feeling of heartache emerged.

“. . . . . .”

After a while, she picked up the pen again.

She opened the account book and crossed out the previous savings plan, ruthlessly deducting 1,000 yuan.

She thought, this money should be reserved as the fund for treating Qiu YiBai to meals.

Hopefully, that’d make her happier.

Before Shen NingXin had time to invite her to dinner, Qiu YiBai had already flown out for a business trip to hold the exhibition.

She brought quite a few people. Besides Manager Liu and Assistant Han, there were also a few salespeople who had always performed well.

Zhao Jie was also included in this team.

She didn’t leave much work behind, so when she left, Shen NingXin had a lot more leisure time.

People tended to think more when idle.

Worried about Qiu YiBai’s state, Shen NingXin scrolled through Weibo more often than usual, but she was unable to find any useful information.

Perhaps it was because she was too busy, but she rarely made any posts during this time.

Shen NingXin had no way of knowing how she felt, and afraid of disturbing her work, she couldn’t make herself ask. She was about to go crazy after being like this for a long time.

She should go out to play and relax.

Thinking like this, she immediately opened the group chat, asking Meng Yao and the others out again.

The group of people soon met at Night Talk.

Meng Yao and Li Shan were still the same, nothing different from usual. In contrast, Shen NingXin found that Jiang Yue looked rather triumphant, a big grin present on her face when she arrived.

“You guys can spend however much you want today,” she said, “It’s my treat no matter how much it costs.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Shen NingXin became 90% sure of the reason. This person was definitely having happy conversations with Assistant Han these days.

And reality proved that this was indeed the case.

Just as she concluded her thoughts, Jiang Yue came over mysteriously as Shen NingXin raised her head. She asked Shen NingXin about the exhibition and asked when Assistant Han would be back.

“We texted last night, and she told me that the exhibition exhausted people,” Jiang Yue supported her head with a hand and ranted to Shen NingXin, “Why’s it so horrible ah, what exactly is the exhibition for?”

She also asked, “What do you think I should give her the day she returns to welcome her?”

“. . . . . .”

She said a lot, but Shen NingXin wasn’t exactly focusing, only catching one useful piece of information.

“You guys talked last night?” she asked.

“Yeah.” Jiang Yue nodded and took a sip of the wine from the table, unconcealed excitement and the desire to flaunt in her eyes. “We even talked for over an hour, amazing, right?”

Even talked for over an hour.

As she listened, Shen NingXin subconsciously sighed, shaking her head and saying, “That’s nice.”

Her tone sounded a little envious and even a little helpless, too.

Jiang Yue was taken aback and quickly realized that something was wrong with her, asking, “What’s wrong, tell me?”

She even patted her on the shoulder. “There shouldn’t be any secrets between besties!”

She spoke earnestly.

Shen NingXin stared at her, and after a while, she couldn’t help but smile, nodding as she said, “Okay.”

During the time it took to drink a glass of wine, Shen NingXin told Jiang Yue everything that happened recently.

But to save Qiu YiBai’s face, she concealed the fact that she was a crybaby, only roughly talking about her own state of mind these days.

During this period, Jiang Yue listened attentively, and she was still silent for a long time even after Shen NingXin finished talking.

Shen NingXin initially thought that she was going to ask her a lot of questions and quickly got ready for that, waiting nervously and intently.

But after waiting for a long time, the response she received from Jiang Yue was: “You like her!”

Shen NingXin: “?!”

So straightforward?

She was completely stunned, her cheeks reddening inadvertently. She frantically began explaining to Jiang Yue that she simply had a good impression of Qiu YiBai, that it probably hadn’t gotten to the point that she liked her, right . . .

She was stumbling the entire time she said this.

As Jiang Yue listened, she couldn’t help but let out “tsk, tsk” out of disapproval, patting Shen NingXin’s shoulder subconsciously. “It’s good enough to have a good impression ah. Beautiful love stories all begin like this ah!”

“Plus, this is the first time I’ve seen you like this,” she said, instinctively leaning further in the direction of Shen NingXin, saying, “You’ve never cared about anyone so much before. I can feel that this person holds a special place in your heart.”

“I think you should give it a chance and follow your heart,” Jiang Yue sighed, her tone serious for once, “There’s something we’ve never told you. To be honest, Shen NingXin, you usually seem so lonely, and you’re also very reserved, rarely taking the initiative to approach anyone.”

“But it’s different this time. Didn’t you choose to care about this person out of your volition? This is the first time, ah, so I think that, perhaps, you really do like her.”

“Why not . . . put in some more effort.”

Shen NingXin wasn’t able to sleep for most of the night.

Thankfully tomorrow was a holiday, so she had plenty of time to spend leisurely.

And . . . to see herself clearly.

The sky brightened then darkened, darkened then brightened, the white clouds slowly gliding across the sky to reveal the previously concealed sun and unearthing the warm light once again.

It happened to envelop Shen NingXin, warm like a hug between close lovers.

Shen NingXin, who had been silent all night, finally raised her hand.

Listening to the scattered voices coming from outside, she sensed the temperature of her arm and fingertips.

Some things are simply figured out inadvertently.

Shen NingXin stood by the window and looked out. After a while, she took a deep breath and sent Jiang Yue a thank you over. Afterward, she opened the chat window labeled two-and-a-half years old.

Moving her fingers, she sent Qiu YiBai a greeting—

“Have you been doing well these past few days, President Qiu?”

As well as.

“When are you coming back?”

Three days later was the date of Qiu YiBai’s return.

After thinking about it, Shen NingXin put on a pretty dress in the end, and at the same time, applied an attractive makeup look and styled a good-looking hairdo.

She even drew a delicate mole under her eye. (TL/N: a “mole under the eye” is like a sign of beauty)

After she did everything, she stood in front of the mirror and looked at herself, nervous yet happy.

En, she looked pretty.

She couldn’t help but let out a breath of relief and hurried downstairs to catch the bus.

She still felt nervous along the way.

She had always viewed Qiu YiBai as someone who had the mentality of a two-and-a-half-year-old when she looked after her. She didn’t have any special thoughts when they spent time together, and it felt natural to take care of her.

But now it was different. Since the transition of her frame of mind, Shen NingXin didn’t change for the better but had rather become awkward.

She had never tried going after someone before. Although she had an appearance complex, she had also always been quiet. If she saw someone she liked, it was enough to simply look at them; never had she been this active about it.

So after much deliberation, the only method she thought of was to keep Qiu YiBai company through overtime by organizing documents.

How hard.

She sighed, and knowing that Qiu YiBai would not be back until this afternoon, she shook her head to dispel the thoughts in her heart and worked, devoting herself to the tasks at hand.

It wasn’t until work almost ended did Qiu YiBai finally come back.

It seemed as though the exhibition went smoothly, for she appeared to be in a good mood. When she saw Shen NingXin, she paused, and after some moments, even complimented that she looked pretty.

Shen NingXin’s heart warmed up when she heard her words, then slightly raised her lips into a smile as she watched Qiu YiBai return to her office, turn on the computer, and start working.

After work ended, she waited until everyone was gone before finally knocking on Qiu YiBai’s office door.

When she entered, she saw that Qiu YiBai was indeed very busy still.

Shen NingXin quickly asked, “President Qiu, I’m not in a hurry to get off work today. Could I help you with your work?”

Besides, this wasn’t the first time she stayed to help—whether it was on her own initiative or not.

Hearing her, Qiu YiBai soon agreed, nodding as she took out a stack of files for Shen NingXin to organize, then continued to work on other things.

Shen NingXin stared at her for some moments and didn’t say anything else in the end. She bent down and sat opposite of Qiu YiBai and began working, too.

The two of them had always been in sync in this regard, where when they worked together, they’d obtain twice the result with half the effort, completing most of Qiu YiBai’s work at hand.

Glancing at the time, it was already eight in the evening.

Qiu YiBai straightened up, and upon seeing that Shen NingXin was still busy working, she quickly called for a stop.

Afterward, she thanked her rather shyly and asked if she wanted to have a meal together.

Shen NingXin’s eyes lit up when she heard her words, and she happily agreed.

Just as she was about to get up, she saw Qiu YiBai suddenly pause, and Shen NingXin didn’t know what she saw, but her gaze never left her face.

The roots of Shen NingXin’s ears reddened from her stare.

“What’s wrong, President Qiu?” she felt incredibly embarrassed and hurriedly asked Qiu YiBai.

As soon as she finished speaking, she suddenly saw Qiu YiBai gently stretch out her hand in her direction.

She also stood up, approaching Shen NingXin very slowly and lightly.

“??!”

Shen NingXin was taken aback by her. Unsure of what Qiu YiBai planned on doing, she didn’t dare move, subconsciously closing her eyes before opening them quickly, staring nervously at Qiu YiBai’s gradually enlarged face.

She then discovered that . . . Qiu YiBai gently placed her index finger under her eye.

Her lips also raised into a smirk, and she lightly rubbed her skin.

A new sensation and temperature emerged from where the two made contact, stunning Shen NingXin for a short period. Her brain crashed, taking a while for her to get her senses together.

Just as she regained consciousness, she heard Qiu YiBai say this with a smile, “Shen NingXin, what exactly did you do? Why were you so careless, dirtying a spot under your eye?”

Shen NingXin: “Ah?”

She was taken aback, then quickly found a reflective spot to take a look and soon discovered that something seemed to be missing from her face.

Qiu YiBai actually erased the delicate mole she drew under her eye!!!

Shen NingXin: “. . . . . .”

She sighed internally, the fluttering emotions she had felt immediately disappearing. When she raised her eyes, she discovered that Qiu YiBai was still studying that thing, saying, “Good thing I wiped it off for you, if someone else sees it, they’re definitely going to make fun of you.”

I actually want to make fun of you right now!

Shen NingXin couldn’t be any more speechless, and she was silent for a long time before finally forcing out a smile.

She reluctantly said to Qiu YiBai, “I thank you ah . . .”
