Chapter 30: This is your compensation

Perhaps because of Qiu YiBai’s compliment, Shen NingXin had a good dream for once.

Upon waking up, she felt happier both in body and mind.

To prevent being late, she deliberately set an alarm in advance last night, and there were still almost two hours before the meeting time.

Thinking about how she was going to meet customers today, Shen NingXin was too excited to fall back asleep, so she quickly got up and found a formal dress to put on, then went to the makeup mirror and put on light makeup.

There was still a lot of time left after she did everything.

She took a deep breath, then opened her phone’s recording software and found the recording from when she talked to Qiu YiBai last night.

She purposely kept note of perhaps documenting one.

Qiu YiBai taught her a lot of things, and Shen NingXin was afraid she couldn’t grasp everything completely, so she decided to simply record the conversation for a permanent record.

This way, whenever she wanted to review, she could immediately replay it.

She smiled and repeated after the recording several times to make sure the knowledge was concrete in her head. Afterward, she ate a simple breakfast before finally setting off and going downstairs.

Since they lived close together, the two agreed to meet up at the community entrance. But when Shen NingXin came down, she didn’t see anyone come at the meeting time.

Maybe Qiu YiBai suddenly had something to do.

She wasn’t in a hurry anyway and scrolled through her phone as she waited.

Almost out of habit, she opened Weibo and clicked on Qiu YiBai’s dummy account.

Shen NingXin then found that she had updated the top post.

It was the usual format of photos and words. She photographed her precious set of A Ji’s, which included the figures Shen NingXin gave her before, small clay figures, and plush dolls that looked pleasant to touch.

Qiu YiBai deeply liked those things, for Shen NingXin discovered that she even bought a bunch of changeable clothes for the A Ji’s. They were in all sorts of colors, such as red, blue, and pink.

The one in the front wore a goose-yellow-colored dress.

Shen NingXin was rather surprised upon seeing it. Thinking that the color and style of this dress were similar to hers from last night, she hurriedly went to read the text Qiu YiBai wrote—

“It turns out the goose-yellow color is actually rather pretty. I thought Shen NingXin looked good wearing it, so I gave it a try for my A Ji, too.”

Shen NingXin: “. . . . . .”

She almost died out of anger because of Qiu YiBai.

Comparing her to a dog again!

Shen NingXin was quite impressed with this person. While feeling speechless, upon raising her head, she saw Qiu YiBai had arrived with her Maserati.

It was fixed ah.

Seeing this, Shen NingXin quickly stood on her toes and glanced at the car door, and she did not see any remnants of the big turtle.

No wonder she was in such a good mood yesterday.

Shen NingXin sighed and quickly walked forward a few steps to say good morning to Qiu YiBai, then opened the car door and got in.

“Where are we going to pick Zhao Jie up?” she asked.

“Zhao Jie had gone to the factory ahead of time.” Qiu YiBai glanced at her. “There’s no need to pick her up. We can just go directly.”

“Okay,” Shen NingXin responded with a nod, then adjusted her skirt.

As she thought about what to say, she suddenly heard Qiu YiBai speak again, “But before we go to the factory, we have to pick someone up.”

Shen NingXin followed along with her words and asked, “Who?”

Qiu YiBai slightly raised a brow. “The translator.”

The translator?

Shen NingXin was taken aback upon hearing this.

Why ask for a translator?

So . . . it wasn’t necessary for them to directly communicate in English with the customers today?

Perhaps seeing Shen NingXin’s confusion, Qiu YiBai immediately said, “The customers today are Korean, and they’re not exactly fluent in English, so in order to prevent any mistakes when discussing, it’s necessary to ask for a translator.”

“One, it’s out of consideration for the customers, and two, it’s to save time and avoid unnecessary troubles.”

So that’s why.

Shen NingXin nodded in response, suddenly feeling a little regretful.

It seemed like all her practice last night wouldn’t come to use.

As she thought, Qiu YiBai spoke again, “But the practice last night was still necessary. You’ll definitely use it in your work in the future.”

Shen NingXin was a little shocked hearing her words.

This person was able to immediately guess her thoughts.

It sounded like she could mind read, but how come she couldn’t tell what she thought normally.

Was there a number limit to this ability?

Thinking of this, Shen NingXin inexplicably wanted to laugh, subconsciously curving her eyes into a crescent as she responded, “I understand.”

Her smile was really pretty.

Maybe it was because Shen NingXin was in a good mood, but even her tone of voice was sweeter than usual, carrying a touch of tenderness and softness.

Qiu YiBai couldn’t help but be dazed when she heard her, the roots of her ears turning red inadvertently.

She glanced at Shen NingXin from her peripheral for a while, then lightly coughed and said, “Remember to treat me to a meal later.”

Shen NingXin was perplexed hearing her words.

This person took the initiative to request her to treat herself to a meal again!

She couldn’t help but ask, “Why?”

“Did you think teaching you for so long last night was free?” Qiu YiBai said, “Any random course you find would already cost a few hundred, and professional software even require membership.”

Shen NingXin nodded in response, understanding that it was true.

She then realized something else. Could it be that she saw her studying in front of the elevator last night?

No wonder . . . she’d call her so late at night to teach her.

Turns out our President Qiu was this gentle ah.

When she figured this out, Shen NingXin couldn’t help but feel warmed, gently nodding.

Her lips also raised quickly, and she said sincerely, “Alright, alright.”

“I owe President Qiu another favor this time.”

Driving north the whole way, they arrived at a certain community and picked up the translator, then the group of people went to the factory together.

They came early, so the customers hadn’t arrived yet.

Qiu YiBai went upstairs to the conference room with the documents in her arms, then handed the ones she prepared out. After that, she explained to the translator the general process and purpose of the meeting.

During this period, Shen NingXin paid incredible attention.

As a newcomer, she didn’t know much about these things. Acting with discernment, she poured each of them a glass of water. Afterward, she found a place that was out of the way and sat down, then listened closely to the things Qiu YiBai explained.

Soon after, the customers arrived.

They went down to bring them up, and the meeting began shortly.

She had to admit that Qiu YiBai was really amazing.

As a rookie, Shen NingXin’s part was only to listen on the side. There were essentially no chances for her to speak, but because of this, she was able to observe the entire process of the meeting more attentively.

A total of five people came from the other side, but on theirs, they were only two people who actually had the power to speak—

Qiu YiBai and Zhao Jie.

However, despite being fewer in numbers, they still had more than enough momentum, not losing to the other party at all. They analyzed the advantages of KeRui in comparison to similar companies, provided actual data to prove the superiority of KeRui glass beads, broke down their questions one by one before giving improved answers and solutions, and so on and so forth.

The customers obviously came here to negotiate the price, but in the end, not only did they not reduce a single cent, Qiu YiBai actually gained a lot of advantages.

But it still sounded like a win-win situation for both parties.

When it came to business talks, it truly was a competition of who was the better speaker.

After the meeting, Qiu YiBai specially invited everyone to a meal near the commercial street.

It was a newly opened restaurant that specialized in Buddha Jumps Over the Wall1. The rest of the dishes were completely unknown, mainly depending on the chef’s mood.

This was the first time Shen NingXin came to such a high-end restaurant. She already felt bad, and upon thinking about the expenditure per person, she felt even worse.

On the other hand, it didn’t affect Qiu YiBai at all; she didn’t even blink.

“Don’t feel bad,” Zhao Jie leaned in and said softly, “Wool comes from the sheep’s back. We’re really spending the customers’ money.”

(TL/N: “One gets the benefit, but the price has been paid.”)

Thinking about it carefully, that was right.

Shen NingXin couldn’t help but smile and lightly nodded, then quickly stepped forward to open the door for them.

“. . . . . .”

The customers said that they didn’t have the habit of drinking early in the afternoon, so Qiu YiBai asked the waitress to serve water and beverages according to their preferences.

During this period, she asked for Shen NingXin opinion to see what she wanted to drink.

“I’ll just have orange juice,” Shen NingXin quickly responded.

Qiu YiBai nodded and turned to ask the translator.

Afterward, the group of people casually chatted and the drinks were soon brought over.

The waitress had a good eye, understanding early on that they were entertaining customers, so she placed the majority of the drinks on the customers’ side, passing the water left to Qiu YiBai.

There were only two bottles, one for Qiu YiBai and the other for the translator.

Shen NingXin’s drink was accidentally placed on the customers’ side.

Seeing this, Shen NingXin paused, then raised her eyes and looked at the bottle of orange juice. In the end, she couldn’t make herself ask for it.

It wasn’t as though she had to drink that, she’ll just . . . have the food then.

She sighed internally, then picked up the spoon and started drinking the soup in front of her.

Her head was slightly lowered, and she didn’t notice that Qiu YiBai seemed to glance in her direction.

The atmosphere was good.

Qiu YiBai and Zhao Jie were the types who knew how to talk, and they pleased the customers quite well during the meal. They even forgot about their habit of not drinking during the afternoon, asking the waitress for some alcohol at some point.

Everyone toasted and drank together, and afterward, it was up to everyone’s choice who they wanted to toast.

Shen NingXin toasted each of the five customers once, and after seeing Qiu YiBai and Zhao Jie still drinking with them, she decided to get up and toast them again.

But before she could move, Qiu YiBai suddenly stood up again on the other side.

This occurred several times, and she wasn’t able to find another chance before all the drinks were gone.

Seeing this, Shen NingXin was a little dazed, and an idea gradually floated into her mind—

Perhaps it was her imagination, but she felt as though Qiu YiBai was doing this on purpose.

Could it possibly be that she remembered what happened at the company dinner before and thought that she couldn’t drink, thus . . . acting like this?

After the meal, Qiu YiBai specifically called a car to take the customers back to the hotel, then called a substitute driver to take herself back to the company.

“Shen NingXin, you and Zhao Jie should just directly go home,” she said, “There are less than two hours before work ends. You guys have worked hard today, go home early.”

How warm-hearted.

Zhao Jie nodded in response, exchanged a few words with Qiu YiBai, then quickly took a taxi away.

Only Shen NingXin was left, still standing in place.

Upon seeing this, Qiu YiBai slightly turned her head to look at her. “Why are you not leaving yet?”

Although Qiu YiBai drank a lot today, she wasn’t completely drunk, only slightly tipsy. Except for the slight redness of her cheeks, everything else was normal.

She could walk normally, communicate normally, and there seemed to be no signs of her about to cry.

But Shen NingXin still felt uneasy.

Suddenly hearing Qiu YiBai ask herself, she subconsciously shook her head and said, “Let me go back to the company with you.”

“Even Zhao Jie left already, why do you want to go back?” Hearing her words, Qiu YiBai couldn’t help but raise a brow. “Didn’t you have quite a few glasses? And since you can’t hold your drink, you should just hurry home and rest.”

So this really was the reason.

Hearing the words “you can’t hold your drink”, Shen NingXin suddenly felt a little dazed.

At this moment, the substitute driver had arrived. After conversing with Qiu YiBai, the driver got in the car, ready to leave.

Qiu YiBai looked back at Shen NingXin, told her to go home early once more before turning around.

But before she could leave, Shen NingXin suddenly grabbed the corner of her clothes.

“I’m worried about you.” Qiu YiBai heard her soon say. “I’m afraid of something happening to you on the way while you’re drunk.”

“So it’s better if I go back to the company with you.”

This was the first time Qiu YiBai saw someone with such passion for work. She couldn’t even force her to leave.

Seeing this, she couldn’t but sigh, then said, “I’m not drunk. It’s not like I didn’t know who was sitting across from me. I’d be a fool if I got myself drunk while eating with customers.”

It was the honest truth.

Likely due to being in a hurry to defend herself, she revealed a little extra information.

And immediately, Shen NingXin caught onto something.

So whether or not she got drunk depended on who was sitting on the other side? Because the customers were the other party, she was always vigilant and had never gotten drunk.

Yet this person had gotten drunk so many times during meals with her.

Was it because . . . she could relax when she was with her?

A little too confident ah Shen NingXin.

When she realized this, Shen NingXin quickly shook her head to dispel the thoughts from her mind.

But she still didn’t let go of the hand holding onto Qiu YiBai’s clothes and strongly demanded to go back with Qiu YiBai.

Qiu YiBai couldn’t talk over her in the end, so she nodded helplessly in agreement but still said, “Be careful to not mess up your work because you’re drunk and dizzy.”

“Otherwise I will deduct from your salary.”

She said this all the time but never once had she deducted anything.

Shen NingXin treated what she said as nonsense and quickly accepted. She then subconsciously raised her eyes to look at Qiu YiBai’s expression.

Immediately afterward, she realized that although this person said that she was unwilling, there was still happiness evident in her eyes.

How prideful.

“. . . . . .”

In the car, Qiu YiBai didn’t say anything the entire time, leaning back in her seat and closing her eyes for a while to recuperate.

Shen NingXin was afraid of disturbing her, so she didn’t say a word at all, going back to the company with her in silence.

After watching the substitute driver park the car and Qiu YiBai pay the money, Shen NingXin hurriedly stepped forward to help her to the elevator.

But unexpectedly, Qiu YiBai didn’t respond and, not knowing what she suddenly remembered, she made several turns and brought her to the supermarket.

“What are we doing here?” Shen NingXin quickly asked upon seeing this.

“To buy some water,” Qiu YiBai said.

“BaiSuiShan again, right?” Shen NingXin immediately smiled, then calmed her, “President Qiu, you don’t need to move. I’ll go buy it, you just stand here and wait . . .”

Before she finished speaking, she saw that this person had already raised her foot and entered.

Qiu YiBai walked around the shelf selling drinks, and in the end, unexpectedly, took a bottle of orange juice.

Did this person’s taste change today?

Shen NingXin thought as she watched her check out.

Still thinking, she raised her eyes and suddenly saw that Qiu YiBai had already finished paying and had turned around.

But not only did she not unscrew the bottle cap and take a few sips, she instead passed the orange juice in her direction.

Shen NingXin couldn’t help being a little puzzled. “President Qiu, didn’t you want to drink this? What are you giving this to me for?”

“I’m giving it to you, just take it.” Seeing her refuse, Qiu YiBai immediately frowned, displeased.

Taking a few steps forward, she stuffed the orange juice in Shen NingXin’s hand, and only then did she nod in satisfaction and got ready to leave.

She seemed to have said something before leaving.

Shen NingXin hurriedly caught up to her and finally made out the content of her words.

She said, “Weren’t you unable to drink it during the meal?”

“This is your compensation.”

“Buddha Jumps Over the Wall”, “also known as Buddha’s Temptation or Fotiaoqiang, is a variety of shark fin soup in Fujian cuisine. Since its creation during the Qing dynasty, the dish has been regarded as a Chinese delicacy known for its rich taste, and special manner of cooking.”
