Chapter 29: A good-looking girl

This was the first time Shen NingXin realized just how hard-headed1 Qiu YiBai was.

Hearing this person’s answer, she was so baffled that she didn’t say anything for a while. The tiny bit of attraction she had suddenly felt for her last night also disappeared in an instant.

As expected of an undeveloped boulder . . .

It was impossible for Qiu YiBai to ever consider anything romantic.

Shen NingXin sighed, then smiled and assured her, “President Qiu, you’re overthinking it. I was just asking.”

“I don’t have any thoughts about wanting to date.”

She said, subconsciously making her tone heavier.

“Really?” As soon as her voice fell, Qiu Yibai raised a brow in suspicion.

“Really.” Shen NingXin smiled. “Even if President Qiu you started dating someday, I would never.”

What she said just now was quite absolute.

Qiu YiBai was taken aback by her words, then coughed lightly and crossed her arms as she said, “It’s not like I’m saying you can’t, just don’t . . .”

Before she could finish speaking, the elevator had arrived at their floor.

Shen NingXin nodded and quickly exited the elevator, reassuring, “I know, I will work hard!”

After speaking, she was almost gone.

Qiu YiBai stared at her back for a while and couldn’t understand what was up with her.

What’s wrong?

Was she upset today?

“. . . . . .”

Truthfully, Shen NingXin wasn’t all that upset.

Although this person was very capable of work, was beautiful and had a good figure, and was a woman wealthier than she could ever imagine, she was really just a child with the mentality of a two-and-a-half-year-old.

She couldn’t expect Qiu YiBai to understand so many things.

Besides, her attraction toward this person hadn’t reached the stage where it had to be no one else but her.

It was probably just a misattribution of arousal2 at play.

Shen NingXin thought for a while and suddenly thought of this fitting term.

After all, Qiu YiBai’s reaction at that time really warmed her heart.

She was willing to carry her, would anxiously ask her if she needed to go to the hospital, and remembered her fear of the dark that she once casually mentioned.

There was also that amulet from before and the small gift she brought back from abroad.

Every response was actually very heart-warming.

It was a gentleness she had never experienced for over than 20 years . . .

As Shen NingXin thought, she sighed helplessly all of a sudden.

She suddenly felt as though she was so pitiful.

Shanking her head, she stopped thinking about it and started to deal with the work at hand.

There weren’t too many things to do today, so she was able to quickly complete the tasks Zhao Jie gave her. Afterward, she wanted to open the group chat and check out what Meng Yao and the others were chatting about.

But when she moved her fingers, instead of opening WeChat, she watched herself open a webpage.

She was going crazy.

Feeling both nervous and that she was out of her mind, she subconsciously glanced at the people around her, then lowered her head slightly and quickly typed something into the search bar—

“What happens if the person you want to make romantic advances to doesn’t get the signals?”

Right after she clicked search, numerous results popped up.

Shen NingXin clicked on each one and discovered that many people had the same experience, and there were also a lot of people answering the question.

“Maybe the way you’re flirting is wrong, or the person isn’t attracted to you at all.”

“Do you have too much free time? Why look for torture?”

“Perhaps you don’t even meet the prerequisites, maybe you’re too ugly.”

Shen NingXin: “. . . . . .”

She felt offended.

She sighed, stared at the sentence for a long time, and finally, turned off her phone, feeling irritated. Her mind then went into confusion.

Just as she began wondering if she actually was ugly, she suddenly remembered a piece of critical information.

Qiu YiBai she . . . wasn’t she face blind?

Could someone who was face blind tell what’s good-looking?

Shen NingXin thought for a while and still couldn’t understand. In the end, she reopened the webpage and posted all her questions.

But she still couldn’t figure it out.

There were many different opinions, some said yes, some said no, and some said it actually depended on the degree of face blindness.

Alright . . . then.

Our President Qiu was rather unfathomable.

Shen NingXin didn’t work overtime tonight.

She had already finished the work at hand and coupled with how she wasn’t in a good mood today, she decided to get together with Meng Yao and the others at the bar, hoping to relieve her mood by drinking and listening to music.

After arriving home from the bus and changing clothes, she realized that she was about to be late, so she chose to take a taxi to Night Talk.

But when she arrived, she discovered that no one else was there yet.

She couldn’t help but sigh, then went to the bar and asked for a glass of wine, waiting for everyone as she drank.

It was Night Talk’s anniversary celebration tonight, and the event was quite big, attracting many newcomers.

There were girls of all types, such as the cool and mature type, loli type, and innocent type. At a glance, all of them were very beautiful.

It was a heaven for those with an appearance complex.

It if were the usual, Shen NingXin would definitely take a few more glances subconsciously.

But for some reason, perhaps it’s because she’s used to seeing Qiu YiBai and observed this level of beauty first-hand, her taste had changed at some point and most people didn’t appeal to her anymore.

As she drank and looked around, she actually yawned out of boredom after a while.

She’s going to fall asleep soon if they still don’t come.

She shook her head in an attempt to keep herself awake, lowering her eyes and scrolling her phone as she browsed Weibo. Before she could do anything else, she suddenly felt someone pat her from behind.

“Finally, you’re all here!” Shen NingXin immediately smiled, quickly turning her head to look.

However . . . the people who came weren’t Meng Yao and the others but rather Assistant Han.

“Assistant Han!” Startled, Shen NingXin’s straightened her body inadvertently.

Soon remembering what happened in the morning, she hurriedly approached her and said softly, “Do you want me to cooperate with you?”

She thought that she shouldn’t ruin it again this time.

But she didn’t expect Assistant Han to laugh as soon as her voice fell.

“No worries,” she said, patting Shen NingXin on the shoulder then sitting down across from her, “We broke up. I came to the bar today simply to have fun.”

She added, “Thank you for thinking about me.”

There was tenderness and gratitude in her eyes.

Hearing her words, Shen NingXin felt a little embarrassed and quickly shook her head, saying that it was nothing. She then called the bartender over and ordered a glass of wine for Assistant Han, too.

After the two drank and chatted for a while, those people finally appeared.

Similar to last time, Meng Yao and Li Shan walked together, happily talking, and Jiang Yue followed them with a frown.

It seemed like she still hadn’t gone over her heartbreak.

Was the blow that big ah.

Seeing her like that, Shen NingXin instantly felt both amused and bad for her, then sighed and called Jiang Yue over to comfort her.

But before she could speak, she suddenly caught a glimpse of Jiang Yue’s eyes brightening up.

What did she see?

Shen NingXin followed her gaze and immediately discovered . . . this person was actually staring at Assistant Han.

“You, no way!” Shen Ning was startled, then said in a lighter voice, “This is my coworker!”

Jiang Yue pretended she couldn’t hear her. “Shen NingXin, you knew such a beautiful lady, why didn’t you introduce her to me?”

After speaking, before waiting for Shen NingXin to respond, she walked forward and shook hands with Assistant Han. “I’m Shen NingXin’s friend, Jiang Yue. Nice to meet you!”

Even her back looked excited and happy.

Didn’t you say you were a b*tch if you fell in love again!

Were you this fickle?

Fearing that Jiang Yue would say something wrong, she hurriedly took her phone out and sent a message to Jiang Yue, telling her to be cautious with her words and actions.

She said a lot, and in the end, only received a few sound effects—

“Woof woof woof!!!”

Shen NingXin: “. . . . . .”

Jiang Yue and Assistant Han hit it off and in the end, even gave each other their contact information.

Seeing this, Shen NingXin stopped worrying about it, then got up to watch the performance with Meng Yao and the others. By the time they came out of Night Talk, it was already dark.

After politely saying goodbye to Assistant Han, they started criticizing Jiang Yue, saying that she was the model of someone who’d dump their friends for their girlfriend/boyfriend and that she was a little dog who went back on her words.

Jiang Yue denied everything the entire time, and not only so, she even smiled with joy.

“That’s what I said after getting drunk, so you can’t take it seriously,” she said, “People have to look forward, they can’t stay stuck in the mire of the past.”

How logical.

Shen NingXin didn’t know whether to cry or laugh.

“Then what are you going to do afterward?” Shen NingXin asked, teasing her.

“What do you mean?” Jiang Yue said, “Obviously make advances on her. I’ll ask her out to meals, watch movies, and play games. More contact is bound to bring us closer.”

“I’m not dumb.” She raised a brow. “If I don’t hold onto such a beautiful lady, someone else will steal her away!”

“Is that so?” Shen NingXin nodded in response. After a while, she suddenly felt as though she had gained some insight.

So, did she have to use this same method with Qiu YiBai?

Was it really possible to move such a boulder?

“. . . . . .”

The next day, Shen NingXin got up on time.

Remembering Jiang Yue’s words, she paused, and instead of wearing those serious and demure clothes that didn’t match her age, she put on a really pretty dress.

This was one of her favorites.

The dress was goose-yellow-colored all around with fresh-looking flowers adorned on the chest. The skirt had a slightly puffed design, and the cuffs were surrounded by a playful circle of lace.

It especially fit her, cute and fairy-like.

Shen NingXin took a good look at herself in the mirror, then put on a light make-up and styled a fitting hairstyle. After all that, she locked the security door and went downstairs to catch the bus.

As soon as she arrived at the company, she was complimented by many colleagues.

This inevitably made her feel a little more confident.

She thought, since so many people liked it, Qiu YiBai would definitely like it, too.

As she thought, she raised her eyes and saw that Qiu YiBai had already arrived.

She was probably in a good mood today, the expression on her face much softer than usual, and there was a faint smile in her eyes.

She even greeted everyone in the office for once.

Seeing this, Shen NingXin hurriedly stood in front of her and deliberately let out a sweet smile. “Good morning, President Qiu.”

“Oh, good morning,” Qiu YiBai answered with a nod, swiftly looked over her, then retracted her gaze and walked quickly to her office.

She didn’t give her another glance from start to end.

Leaving only Shen NingXin standing there in a mess.

So . . . did she not notice or did she not like it?

On the basis of sending documents, Shen NingXin went to Qiu YiBai’s office several times, but she still didn’t receive the response she wanted.

Seems like Qiu YiBai really wasn’t all that attracted to her.

Alright then . . .

Seeing this, Shen NingXin had to give up, sighing helplessly at the bottom of her heart. She then opened the office door, about to leave.

But before she moved, Qiu YiBai, who was sitting at her desk and typing on the computer, suddenly spoke up again.

“Your internship is about to end in three or four days, right?” she asked.

Shen NingXin paused upon hearing her words, then quickly calculated mentally and found that she was right.

Unexpectedly, Qiu YiBai actually remembered.

Emotions welled up from the bottom of her heart, and Shen NingXin immediately nodded.

She then heard Qiu YiBai say, “Zhao Jie and I are going to meet one of her important customers tomorrow to discuss some issues related to future cooperation.”

“If you don’t have anything important to do, come along. Listening and seeing more will definitely help you in the future.”

She turned out to be very thoughtful of her.

Shen NingXin instantly felt moved and hurriedly agreed to it, then she quickly returned to her workstation to start preparing for tomorrow.

She learned about the customers’ company background and the number of shipment orders made by them in the past two years and studied their development trends for the next few years.

Time quickly passed as she worked.

It was almost time to get off work.

Shen NingXin was largely familiar with this company by now and even printed some important items to look over at home.

Just as she walked to the elevator and was about to press the button, she suddenly remembered that she had missed something—

She hadn’t solidified the use of some professional terms.

During the nearly three months of work at KeRui, she had been constantly increasing her reading intake, and at the same, had been doing related oral exercises.

But the result wasn’t all that great. There was never a chance to apply her learning, and although she was able to say some sentences by herself, she probably wouldn’t be able to actually handle talking to foreigners.

Upon realizing this, Shen NingXin quickly took her phone out.

She then opened an English oral practicing app, put on her earbuds, and began intently reading along in a low voice.

She was so focused that she didn’t notice Qiu YiBai, who was holding a cup to get coffee, approach her from behind and even glance at her phone screen.

After returning home, Shen NingXin speedily washed up and got into bed.

This was the first time she was going out with Qiu YiBai for serious fieldwork, and not to mention, it was a foreign customer they were meeting, so she inevitably felt a little excited.

She decided to sleep earlier tonight to practice her English oral skills tomorrow, but just as Shen NingXin put her phone aside after setting an alarm, it suddenly rang.

She was taken aback for a moment before quickly picking it up. She then discovered that it was Qiu YiBai’s voice coming in from the other end.

Why did she suddenly give her a call!

Shen NingXin immediately felt flustered, and thinking that she probably had some important things to tell her, she hurriedly sat up and listened.

There seemed to be the sound of wind coming from the other end.

Afterward, there were some unclear fragments of car noises and people talking. It sounded like Qiu YiBai was walking on the road after getting off from work.

What was so important that she needed to tell her so hurriedly?

Shen NingXin paused, about to ask, before Qiu YiBai spoke first.

But what she said turned out to no longer be in Chinese but rather English.

She said, “Let’s do a simple oral practice.“

Let’s do a simple oral practice.

How did she know she was worried about this?

Shen NingXin was stunned when she heard her words, taking a while before quietly replying an ok back.

Mixed feelings suddenly arose in her heart.

This crybaby . . . was always taking care of her inadvertently.

Thinking about it, it was actually really warm.

Shen NingXin and Qiu YiBai practiced together for over an hour.

Her learning ability had always been pretty good and combined with how pleasant the voice of the person on the other side sounded, she inevitably became focused.

It wouldn’t be long before she mastered everything.

But Qiu Yibai wasn’t relieved just yet and picked some difficult sentences and went over them with her several times.

All the way until it was completely dark out, where it was so quiet that no sound was present.

Shen NingXin felt as though she troubled Qiu YiBai a lot tonight and quickly thanked her, telling her to eat and rest early when she got home.

She said a lot and Qiu YiBai was quite obedient, responding seriously throughout her talk.

Shen NingXin nodded, tilting her head and thinking for a moment, and feeling as though there was nothing left to say, she prepared to say goodbye to Qiu YiBai.

But before she could say anything, that person spoke up first again.

Her tone sounded a little anxious, as though realizing she was going to hang up.

Shen NingXin quickly calmed her, “President Qiu, you can speak, I’m listening.”

As soon as her voice fell, there was suddenly no more sound.

For some reason, this person took a while before finally responding.

And it was still in English—

“You look especially pretty today.“

You look especially pretty today.

Shen NingXin subconsciously paused for half a second, then took a while to return to her senses before hurriedly responding a thank you to her.

After that, she asked, “President Qiu, is this also part of the oral practice?”

After speaking, the other side fell silent for a few seconds again.

“No.” After some unknown amount of time, Qiu YiBai finally spoke again, her voice very small and soft, evidently embarrassed. “It’s just I suddenly remembered there was something I forgot to tell you.”

“Your outfit was indeed very pretty today,” she said, her voice getting smaller and smaller, where it was almost inaudible near the end, “You should wear this kind of clothes more often. You’re a good-looking girl.”

“There’s no reason to dress so seriously.”

Good . . . looking girl.

Although this adjective passed by in a flash, Shen NingXin still caught it very keenly.

Immediately, both her cheeks and the roots of her ears reddened.

So, Qiu YiBai thought she was good-looking?

Was that true?

The original is “直“ and the best word choice I could think of was “hard-headed”, but it’s not the exact term either. “直” or “straight” in Chinese can refer to someone who doesn’t “get” things, often related to romantic things, such as not getting hints or just not being very understanding when they should be. “misattribution of arousal” or “吊桥效应” (Suspension Bridge Effect) “is a term in psychology which describes the process whereby people make a mistake in assuming what is causing them to feel aroused. For example, when actually experiencing physiological responses related to fear, people mislabel those responses as romantic arousal.”
