Chapter 19

Mom and I were watching a television that showed the Pokémon battle two people were having, while we waited for my turn to start my battle.

"Hello, how are you?" When I heard a sudden voice, I turned my head to see where it was coming from, and it was a girl, or so I think, because she had long gray hair and looked quite young, as she was a bit shorter than me and also wearing a mask. Is it some popular trend among fairly young people?

"Hello, I'm fine, and you?" I asked, confused by the suddenness of the situation.

"Very well, are you also a student at Starlki School by any chance?" She asked me.

I looked with confusion in Mom's direction, and she seemed to understand what I was trying to say, even though I was wearing a mask. Instead of giving me any advice, she just showed an expression that seemed to be encouraging me to engage in conversation with the person who had just spoken to us and maybe we could become friends.

"No, I come from a rural place and I'm new to this city, I don't know the place, so I don't know which school you're referring to. Although maybe I'll attend the same school you do because I'll be transferred to a school in two weeks. But why do you ask?" I had to get some information out of this situation.

"It's a shame, I finally thought I had found a classmate who attends the same school as me and who also likes Pokémon battles so much to the point of ignoring the school rules that prohibit participating in Pokémon battles, unless we are on school grounds." She seemed a bit disappointed, and I was confused. Before coming here, I had seen several people wearing masks and they seemed to be around my age. Could she have mistaken me for a girl? I don't want to think about that.

"Is that why there are quite a few people our age wearing a mask?" I was quite curious about that.

"No, not all schools prohibit participating in Pokémon battles outside of school. It's just that many of us try to imitate gym leader Melisa. Because in the past, she did the same and became very famous for how strong her Buneary was. It was a great surprise that after disappearing for a long time, suddenly her last appearance was as the gym leader." I saw how she began to get excited as she started talking about Liza and I saw how Mom felt a little embarrassed when she heard them talking about her.

When she finished mentioning what Liza did, she seemed embarrassed because she suddenly stopped talking about her.

"I'm sorry, I think I got a little excited. But changing the subject, if you're not wearing the mask to avoid someone reporting you to the school so you can be punished, and it also doesn't seem like you're doing it to imitate Melisa, then why are you wearing a mask that seems very uncomfortable to wear?"

When she asked me that last question, I only responded with the first thing that came to mind. "A friend recommended that I come to this place to earn some money, and that I couldn't take off the mask because I would be punished by the person who takes care of me if they found out." She seemed to understand that I didn't want to continue talking about this topic and looked in Mom's direction before asking.

"By the way, are you going to participate with your Lopunny? It's surprising that you already have an evolved Pokémon, they must have been together since they were little." She seemed quite curious about Mom, but before we could continue talking, a horn sounded.

"Participant FlowerGray, enter the battle arena!"

"It's a pity we can't keep talking, can we exchange contacts with our Pokephones?" She asked me hurriedly, as she took out a smartphone.

"I'm sorry, I don't have a Pokephone, where I come from..." before I could finish refusing, Mom pulled out a smartphone and started typing on it at a surprising speed. What caught my attention the most is that she could handle it very easily despite the shape of her hand and the number of fingers she has.

Mom handed her the phone, and I was curious about what she wrote.

After she took a moment to read what Mom wrote, she said "Okay, contact me when you get your Pokephone," before typing something using the keyboard and returning the Pokephone to Mom, then she entered through the door that had opened when she was called, and when she crossed it, it closed automatically.

I looked at Mom with slight doubts, and she said.

"Lopunny (I told her you didn't have a Pokephone, but you would soon get one, so I asked her to leave her number registered and that you would contact her later, when you had your own Pokephone. It's the first time you've made a friend on your own, and I'm very happy about that)."

"But I'm already friends with Swadloon, and that girl probably approached me because she seemed to mistake me for a girl." Mom showed a completely confused expression and after realizing something, she said.

"Lopunny (Don't worry about such small details)." I could only shake my head a little and start watching the television again, which now showed the girl we just met bringing out a Minccino against a Deerling that seemed a bit agitated.

Now that I think about it, that girl didn't tell me her name, and I didn't make one up either.

Well, I probably won't see her again. The city is very big, and even if I enter the same school as her, it's impossible for her to recognize me because my hair color will be different.

But leaving that aside, the battle they're having is kind of boring. There are no big moves, and it seems like they're just using basic moves like and it seems like the trainers are giving orders to the Pokémon like the mythical [Dodge!] and to use the move the trainer asks them to use.

Despite what I think, I also want to do the same. Who hasn't wanted to command Pokémon in that way after watching the anime?

After some exchanges of moves, Minccino ended up winning, and the trainer left the battle arena to be replaced by another trainer, who brought out an Aipom, and to my surprise, the battle started immediately without letting Minccino rest. Is that how this place works? Do you have to do consecutive battles until all your Pokémon faint?

"Lopunny (At the end of each battle, the winner decides whether to continue or withdraw)."

Well, at least they don't force participants to use their Pokémon until exhaustion.

I watched as in the exchange of moves, Aipom ended up under the effect of charm and refused to attack Minccino, who ended up giving it a few hits before stopping until Aipom was completely defeated.

The same trainer put Aipom away before bringing out another Pokémon whose name I couldn't remember, but it looked like an otter (Yungoos), which exchanged moves with Minccino.

The otter knocked Minccino to the ground, and Minccino already seemed quite exhausted. But when it seemed that the otter was going to win by delivering the final blow, Minccino got up from the ground and gave a very tender look that seemed to have hit the otter, and when the otter was caught off guard by Minccino's sudden movement, it stood in front of the otter and before the otter could defend itself, Minccino started hitting it with slaps, and on the fifth slap, the otter ended up fainting.

After that, the girl left the battle arena, and I had to wait about twenty minutes for my turn.

"Participant Foxuark, enter the battle arena!"

I entered through the open door, and although there were seats around the place, there were only about 30 people watching who seemed completely bored. Most of them were looking at their Pokephones, and there were some flying Pokémon around that seemed to be carrying cameras.

I began to ignore everyone in this place and focused on my opponent. He seemed to be a boy my age who had brown hair and wasn't wearing a mask.

"Send out your Pokémon!" A voice sounded, and I could see a man sitting in a high chair with a microphone.

My opponent took out a Poké Ball from which came a sheep with black wool on its face and legs, and the rest of its body was covered in white wool.

Wooloo

I took out Buneary's Poké Ball from my pocket, and when Buneary came out, she seemed a bit confused by the change of environment and started looking at me.

"Obey all my orders," she crossed her arms before saying somewhat annoyed and arrogantly "Buneary (I have no reason to obey your orders)."

I felt somewhat annoyed by her behavior, but I can't get too upset with her, after all, we are twins and she hates it when I act like I'm her superior.

I just sighed and told her, "I'll buy you lots of delicious food if you follow my orders."

I saw the corners of her mouth lift up, and she seemed to put on a happy face when she heard me, before exclaiming full of excitement: "Buneary! (Of course I'll follow your orders!)"

"The combat will begin when the countdown ends, go to your positions!"

I pointed to the battle arena indicating to my sister to position herself in front.

When my sister stood where she should be, the man began the countdown.

5!
4!
3!
2!
1!

"Begin!"

When my opponent and I heard the signal, we both started giving orders to our Pokémon out loud at the same time.

"Buneary, use to close the distance and then use with your ears and finish with !"

"Wooloo, use !"

When Buneary used , Wooloo couldn't finish using and received a kick in its sides from my sister, which ended up throwing Wooloo to the ground, and my sister immediately used , and I saw how the sheep started screaming in pain to the point that it already seemed to be crying, just for my sister to then use on its completely defenseless body, and I could hear. WOOOOOO!!!!! Before Wooloo ended up fainting.

The place fell completely silent, and many of the spectators seemed to have faces of disbelief, and others of sorrow for witnessing how we brutally beat up the poor sheep, and I think my sister went a bit too far.
