CHAPTER 209: PERSUASION

Mireille entered Alcantes Castle and was ushered into the Lord’s Chamber to meet with Clan.

He sat down in a plush chair and looked at Mireille with a slightly sullen expression on his face.

“Mireille… what’s it you want from me? Did you get fired? Unfortunately, I’m not going to hire you.” (Clan)

“I was not fired… I was not…” (Mireille)

Being careful to use polite words, she argued against Clan’s words.

“It’s been a long time, Clan-sama. I brought a letter from my lord, Ars-sama.” (Mireille)

 Mireille said as she bowed.

Clan frowned at the polite attitude that was very unlike the Mireille he knew.

“…Speak the way you do normally. This is too weird.” (Clan)

“Yeah, for real? I don’t like to talk and put on airs.” (Mireille)

“You switched back quite fast…” (Clan)

Clan muttered in half-amazed.

“So, is it a letter from Ars… Why did you bother to bring it to me?” (Clan)

“ You’ll find out when you look inside.” (Mireille)

With that said, Mireille handed the letter to Clan.

Clan took Mireille’s letter and read the contents.

“You will try to persuade Thomas…? Can you even succeed?” (Clan)

“Yeah.” (Mireille)

Mireille nodded and replied.

“He hates me, moreover he never thought highly of you as well.” (Clan)

“ He’s still my brother. If we talk, we can work it out. I don’t think I can make him your direct vassal, though. I want to take him to Canale.” (Mireille)

“That’s what the letter said. Well, a vassal of Ars is as good as a vassal of mine. I have no problem with that. If you think there is room for success, you may meet him. It would be a shame to keep a man of his caliber locked up like this.”

Clan gave her his approval.

After giving his permission, Clan immediately instructed his retainer to lead Mireille to the prison where Thomas was.

Mireille followed him.

There was a dungeon in Alcantes, but Thomas was not housed there.

The dungeons were not a good environment to lock up Thomas, who was going to be a vassal.

It was housed in a rather large room at Alcantes Castle.

Two armed soldiers stood in front of the door to prevent him from escaping.

“We will be present during your visit.” (Guard)

“I want to meet him alone.” (Mireille)

“It’s a rule, so that’s not possible.” (Guard)

Soldiers who stand guard in the Alcantes castle don’t break the rules that often. Mireille thought it would be difficult to persuade them, so she decided to hold the meeting with the two guards.

The door opened.

Inside, Thomas Grangeon was sitting in a chair, looking a little worn out.

“ Hey, you don’t look so good.” (Mireille)

Mireille said, and Thomas glared at Mireille with a stern expression.

“What are you doing here?” (Thomas)

In a low, angry voice, Thomas muttered.

“Is that your reaction to the fact that your sister has come to see you? You should be crying with joy.” (Mireille)

“Hmm, I would have cried with joy if they had told me you were dead.” (Thomas)

“Don’t say terrible things. How did they look like? I want to see my parents’ faces.” (Mireille)

Thomas didn’t react to Mireille’s jokes at all.

“Hey, you’re here, so this is where I’m going.” (Mireille)

“Why did you really come here…” (Thomas)

“I’m here to persuade you. How much longer are you going to be stuck in this dreary place? Let’s get the hell out of here together with me.” (Mireille)

“No.” (Thomas)

Thomas answered immediately.

“Why not? Do you like it here?” (Mireille)

“No, I don’t. I’m not leaving because I’m not going to follow Clan that sent Basamark-sama to death.” (Thomas)

“You’ll be working with my master, Ars Louvent. You’re not going to be a direct vassal of the Clan.” (Mireille)

“This Ars is a vassal of Clan, isn’t he? If so, it’s the same as being under Clan.” (Thomas)

“Well, that’s true, but… But I think Ars and you are a good match. I’m sure he’s got a special eye for people, and I’m sure he’ll be able to gather up some good people and make a big splash in the future.” (Mireille)

“In that case, you should take someone other than me as your vassal and let them grow to their full potential.” (Thomas)

Mireille sighed at his extremely stubborn attitude.

“I’m not sure why you’re so attached to Basamark. He’s just a loser.” (Mireille)

When Mireille mocked Basamark, Thomas’s expression became even grimmer.

“Don’t make fun of Basamark-sama. I owe him a great debt of gratitude. I can’t forget that.” (Thomas)

“Huh. A debt of gratitude. It is true that you owe Basamark a debt of gratitude, but have you not forgotten that you owe me a debt of gratitude as well?” (Mireille)

Hearing Mireille’s words, Thomas has the expression that he was struck by lightning from nowhere.

“Ever since we were kids. Don’t you remember how many times I’ve saved your life? Don’t you remember? Do you think it was all thanks to your own power that you became a vassal of Basamark? You know, you’ve always been a man who can do nothing but follow someone. That hasn’t changed though you’ve gotten a little bigger.” (Mireille)

“…” (Thomas)

Thomas was silent, unable to say anything back.

Mireille then put her mouth close to Thomas’ ear and whispered something to him.

After Mireille pulled her face away from his ear.

Mireille removes her face from his ears and then

“Well, I can’t be sure. You should see Ars once.” (Mireille)

 She said.

Thomas remains silent for a while.

“Let me think about it.”

 He replied.
