The mermaid kingdom lay deep beneath the sea. For mermaids, their unique anatomy allowed them to see clearly in the pitch-black depths, and an innate sense of direction guided them. However, for the humans among them, the prolonged darkness and silence induced discomfort and restlessness.

“We’re almost there,” Li Xi turned to Duan Zhen and said, “If you feel uneasy, you can hold onto me.”

Having consumed the seaweed and mermaid blood, Duan Zhen could now understand their language. Upon hearing Li Xi’s words, he smiled and nodded.

Seeing that he was fine, Li Xi felt relieved and continued swimming forward.

Duan Zhen glanced down and observed Li Xi holding his hand, the one that had been injured. However, the wound on his fingertip seemed to have healed without a trace.

Such a deep wound healing so rapidly made Duan Zhen realize that in a confrontation with the mermaids, they would have almost no chance of winning.

Lost in thought, he examined the surroundings. Suddenly, his eyes, accustomed to the darkness, caught a glimmer of light. As they moved forward, the full view of the brightness emerged—a city built underwater!

“We’re here,” Li Xi stopped and immediately checked on him, “Are your eyes okay?”

Touched by his concern, Duan Zhen nodded his head.

His night vision had been specially trained, allowing him to see clearly in the darkness. Besides, when he sensed the approaching light, he closed his eyes to prepare for the sudden change in illumination, avoiding any discomfort.

“That’s good,” Li Xi smiled.

He turned to survey the city in the distance. Though the city appeared similar to those built by humans, the materials used were different, emitting a faint white light in the dark sea.

From above, the highest structure in the middle was entirely made of crystal.

“Is this what they call the Dragon Palace?” the red-tailed mermaid, lacking knowledge, asked.

“That’s the mermaids’ royal palace,” the little octopus glanced at him. “As a mermaid, haven’t you been here before?”

“It’s been a while since I returned; I forgot,” the red-tailed mermaid dismissed.

The little octopus’s eyes flickered, and he refrained from pressing further.

“Let’s go,” Li Xi interrupted them, “Afterwards, we need to request the king’s permission to use the Tail-Transforming Pool and obtain the remaining medicinal ingredients.”

“That Tail-Transforming Pool sounds crucial. Will they really let us use it without any cost?” the green-tailed mermaid questioned skeptically.

“We need to inquire,” Li Xi responded.

Growing impatient with the questions, he decided to lead the way himself. “If you’re not willing, I’ll ask on my own. But before that, you may have to wait outside.”

The mermaids didn’t mind, but a few humans, weary of the darkness, gritted their teeth and said, “We’ll go with you.”

In this mission, if there was a lack of cooperation between mermaids and humans, the humans would undoubtedly face the consequences. Since they had already come to the mermaids’ headquarters, entering or not didn’t make much difference.

With everyone in agreement, the mermaids didn’t insist further.

The group swam towards the city and was stopped by two young sentries at the gate. These guards were mermaids, with handsome features, clad in armor made of an unknown metal, and holding long spears.

The sentries warily scanned everyone’s faces, placing special emphasis on the few humans being led by the mermaids.

When their gaze fell on Li Xi, a hint of astonishment flickered in their eyes. The tone of their speech softened as they said, “Are you here to participate in the selection of a queen? If so, you need to register in the adjacent building, and the food you brought must also be registered.”

The expressions of the humans led by the mermaids turned dark.

“No,” Li Xi shook his head. “I have important matters to discuss with the king.”

The sentry was taken aback, “Are you planning to claim the throne?”

Li Xi, having heard about it from the previous mermaid, showed no surprise and calmly replied, “No.”

Pointing to Duan Zhen by his side, he smiled slightly, “This is my partner. I’ve found a way for him to become a mermaid, and the witchsaid it must be done using the Tail-Transforming Pool in the palace.”

The sentry widened his eyes, seemingly surprised, but quickly composed himself, “Sorry, I haven’t heard of turning humans into mermaids for a long time.”

Turning to the guard beside him, he instructed, “Keep an eye on this, I’ll take them to register.”

Leading them to a nearby building, the sentry instructed them to write their names and arrival time. He noted down the words “Tail-Transforming Pool” himself, then said, “The king is currently selecting a queen, and he might not have time to receive you immediately. You might need to wait for a couple of days.”

“We’ll also be searching for medicinal ingredients during this time,” Li Xi added.

“Take these passes,” the sentry handed them a few black cards, so light that their weight was almost imperceptible.

“It’s better if the people you brought with you stay indoors at your residence. There are many creatures in the city that are fond of the scent of humans,” he kindly warned.

“I understand,” Li Xi smiled at him, “Thank you for telling me these.”

The sentry blushed slightly, “It’s nothing, it’s what I should do.”

After saying that, he paused for two seconds, somewhat unwillingly asking, “Are you really not interested in becoming the king?”

“I have no such desire,” Li Xi shook his head.

The sentry looked enviously at Duan Zhen and then walked away, glancing back three times.

The people present were dumbfounded by the real-time demonstration of the impact of Li Xi’s face underwater.

They knew Li Xi was good-looking, but was he so handsome that they could be completely ignored? Since the sentry saw Li Xi’s face, he hadn’t glanced at the rest of them.

“Don’t worry, Brother Duan,” Li Xi held Duan Zhen’s hand, “You’re the only one I like.”

Duan Zhen wanted to say he wasn’t worried about it, but upon further thought, there was a slight concern. Children were prone to developing feelings easily. Given the mermaids’ fascination and enthusiasm towards Li Xi’s face, if they were swayed by persistent pursuit, it would be hard for them to accept when Li Xi left after completing the mission.

Such situations had indeed occurred in reality because missions took a long time to complete, and feelings developed with the people inside. It was said that some were still unable to move on.

“Don’t get too emotionally invested,” he advised in a low voice.

“Okay!” Li Xi happily agreed.

The passes given by the sentry came with a house, and Li Xi was assigned a spacious one, enough for ten people without feeling crowded. There was even a room without water, supposedly for the mermaids who prepared food for themselves, as staying in the water would cause the food to swell and rot.

The explanation left several people with unsatisfactory expressions, wondering if this room had ever housed a dead body.

“Just bear with it,” Li Xi expressed his displeasure, “I’ll go out in the next few days to find something to decorate.”

Duan Zhen reached out to pat his head, “No need to bother, we’re only staying here for a few days. If you need to find medicinal ingredients later, you can call me.”

Upon hearing the names of the medicinal ingredients, which seemed to involve hunting marine creatures, Li Xi’s overall combat power seemed to have increased, but in Duan Zhen’s mind, he was still the child who clung to him out of fear.

“Okay!” Li Xi agreed, sneakily pinching his fingers, “Wait for me here. I’ll go ask the king for permission.”

“Shall I accompany you?” Duan Zhen frowned.

“It’s fine. Look at the mermaids’ reactions to me; the king will surely agree. Lately, it’s better not to stir up trouble in the kingdom. After all, we still need their help,” Li Xi whispered, “You stay inside. I’ll be back soon.”

One of them was inside the house, and the other was outside (since mermaids couldn’t enter the dry house, they had to prom themselves up with their tails). Although they were discussing serious matters, their entangled hands and sticky appearance made the others squirm with discomfort.

“Just because he looks a bit better,” someone in the house muttered under their breath.

They also wanted to be treated differently by a beauty! Although the beauty had been a bit fierce initially, wouldn’t it be better to have a fierce beauty in a survival world?

Duan Zhen ignored the jealous and envious gazes from the others. The room had no windows, making it impossible to observe the outside situation. He could only sit by the door and contemplate the overall structure of the entire instance.

Although the mermaids appeared harmless in front of Li Xi, he could vaguely sense an underlying discomfort, similar to the little octopus who, while appearing meek in front of Li Xi, harbored a face full of killing intent when facing him.

Duan Zhen suspected that if not for Li Xi’s presence, this instance might have turned into a mutual slaughter. After all, judging from the mermaids’ behavior, it seemed unlikely that it would have gone smoothly for them to learn so much information.

Just as he was contemplating, he felt something knocking on the door, once, and then again, making a banging sound.

“What’s going on?” the others panicked and asked.

Li Xi had left for less than five minutes, and the crisis in this world began to unfold…

Now that Li Xi left, it’s starting to feel like a real horror world again!
