This night, Li Xi slept soundly in Duan Zhen’s embrace. His head buried in Duan Zhen’s neck, the position was comfortable, surrounded by an enticing fragrance. It was a close call that he didn’t drool in his sleep.

Fortunately, his upbringing had allowed him to maintain his image as a little precious boy. When he woke up in the morning, he secretly used a cleaning spell, then tilted his head at a 45-degree angle, using a sticky sweet voice, “Duan Duan, good morning.”

Duan Zhen indeed looked stunned for a moment.

Li Xi didn’t linger, kissed Duan Zhen’s face and said, “Good morning kiss.”

Then, he pretended to examine Duan Zhen’s neck, saying, “Look, completely healed. I didn’t lie to you last night, right?”

He knew that men often had impure thoughts when waking up. Of course, he also had them. However, taking advantage of the fact that he was currently a mermaid, he arrogantly used his fish tail to tease a certain forbidden area.

Just as he was stealing a laugh, he felt a sudden whirlwind. Duan Zhen, in a cold and ruthless manner, pushed him away, making him spin a few times on the big bed. If the bed weren’t large enough, he might have fallen on the floor.

A trace of resentment appeared in the youth’s eyes.

Duan Zhen pretended not to see and got up to tidy his clothes. “Get up; there’s a lot to do.”

“Insensitive.” Li Xi grumbled.

Little did he know that Duan Zhen used his utmost willpower to avoid touching the youth. After all, he wasn’t a saint. When Li Xi’s appearance was still youthful, he managed to resist. However, as the other turned into a young man, became affectionate, and his eyes were filled with love, he had to remind himself three times a day that this was an eighteen-year-old kid.

Li Xi always danced on the edge of a man’s endurance. If it weren’t for Duan Zhen’s extraordinary patience, he might have succumbed to temptation long ago.

But Li Xi hadn’t realized the results of his behavior yet. He thought Duan Zhen’s heart was as firm as iron. He obediently got up, arranged his clothes, and took out a compressed energy bar for Duan Zhen.

Of course, this wasn’t something sold in the mermaid world. However, considering he was the only one who had explored the mermaid shops, he wasn’t afraid of being found out.

Duan Zhen calmly took it and ate it. He expected a mouthful of fishy taste, but surprisingly, it was a faint fragrance, somewhat like strawberries. On closer inspection, it seemed sweet, akin to flower nectar.

“Is it delicious?” Li Xi, having eaten one himself, squinted in satisfaction. “The taste is quite nice.”

It was somewhat like candy.

“Delicious,” Duan Zhen nodded. “If you like it, buy more to take back.”

“Okay.” Li Xi, without any guilt, smiled. He didn’t mention that he had bought it from the system mall.

The energy bar could replace a day’s worth of meals. After eating one, there was no longer any feeling of hunger. Duan Zhen opened the door, wanting to go outside to see how the mermaids they threw out yesterday were doing. However, Li Xi grabbed his arm.

“Brother Duan.” Li Xi’s voice was low. “Are you going out to find those people?”

“I want to ask about last night’s situation,” Duan Zhen didn’t react at first. When he saw the fingers tugging at his sleeve starting to turn pale, he suddenly realized something. He reached out and gently touched Li Xi’s hair.

The young man’s hair was as soft and fluffy as it was in his youth. Duan Zhen ruffled it, feeling like his fingers were sinking into it.

“Why?” Li Xi asked him somewhat sullenly. “You’ll mess up my hairstyle.”

“Still upset about last night?” Duan Zhen asked with a light laugh.

“They fear death and have no abilities. Why bother helping them?” Li Xi pursed his lips. “If we ignore them, we can easily complete the mission.”

“They do fear death, but the fear of death is human nature,” Duan Zhen said, looking at Li Xi with a hint of gentleness. “Before entering this world, I was a soldier. A soldier’s duty is to protect the country, and they are part of what I protect.”

Li Xi’s expression shifted, understanding and yet not quite understanding. “So, that’s why you protect them like this?”

“More or less,” Duan Zhen nodded. “And when I have the ability, I lend a hand. It won’t do any harm.”

“I understand,” Li Xi said, then whispered, “But I still don’t like them.”

Mainly due to the behavior of these people all along, which was simply unbearable. Li Xi didn’t believe that not a single one of them could fight, yet they comfortably hid behind Duan Zhen, enjoying his protection.

Even if just one of them had come out and put on a show last night, it would have been acceptable. However, not a single one of them opened the door.

Thinking about it made Li Xi angry. He pounced into Duan Zhen’s arms, took a few deep breaths before calming down.

Duan Zhen noticed that he was still unhappy and, unusually, stayed still, letting Li Xi sniff around him like a territorial little animal.

When his mood improved, Li Xi said, “Let’s go and see how they’re doing.”

They walked to the room where Duan Zhen had knocked out the mermaids and thrown them on the ground the night before. They were still not awake, sleeping in a tangled mess in the water, seemingly oblivious. The people inside were also still asleep, resting quite comfortably.

Li Xi gritted his teeth.

Unhappily, he used his tail to wake up each sleeping mermaid one by one, then pushed the door open with a splash.

“Slept well, huh?” He taunted, crossing his arms. “Knowing that the enemies outside have been taken care of, you have no worries, right?”

His words had a sting to them, causing the expressions of those who had just woken up to change.

A youth inside, with a delicate appearance, chuckled awkwardly. “Last night, we wanted to go out and help, but seeing that Brother Duan was more than enough on his own, we decided not to add chaos.”

Li Xi sneered.

This kind of talk might just confuse kids. He turned around and walked away, “Go have breakfast outside. Today, we need to go into the abyss to find octopuses. It’s best to gather all the materials in these few days, or things might go awry.”

From last night’s events, it’s evident that mermaids have ill intentions towards humans. Honestly, Li Xi feels that they don’t harbor good intentions towards him either.

Despite receiving special treatment because of his appearance, the words of the Mermaid King and Ukel make him uneasy. There’s a feeling that they have some ulterior motives.

His bad attitude was something a few people had anticipated. They exchanged glances and the young man who spoke earlier touched his nose, shrugging at them.

Although he wanted to show off in front of the beauty, life is more important. The bodies of humans are no match for these marine creatures underwater, and they dare not engage in fights, especially since they cannot control their movements underwater.

Anyway, Duan Zhen can handle it alone.

Li Xi easily guesses what they are thinking, which makes him even more annoyed.

“Did we really attack you out of hunger last night?” Outside, the mermaid awakened by his tail nervously asks.

Duan Zhen nods, “You have no memory?”

“No, I only remember lying down in the room last night, and the next thing I know, I’m here.” The red-tailed mermaid shakes his head, frowning, “I wasn’t that hungry yesterday.”

“Fortunately, you knocked me out.” The green-tailed mermaid covers his mouth, “If I woke up this morning with human flesh in my mouth… I’d rather be dead.”

He empathetically imagines it for a moment, dry heaving and patting his chest.

Other mermaids don’t look good either.

“This should be part of the game’s setting.” Duan Zhen thinks for a moment, “Eat more today. I’ll monitor your condition tonight.”

Li Xi swims over from the side, hanging on his arm with a serious expression, “Not necessarily. From what you’re saying, it seems like they were being controlled.”

In a normal state of hunger, memory loss shouldn’t occur.

“Control?” Duan Zhen frowns, pondering, “That possibility can’t be ruled out.”

But who would control mermaids to attack humans?

“Could it be the witch?” The black-and-white-tailed mermaid says, “He caught me in the deep sea before, don’t know what he wanted. If it weren’t for Li Xi rescuing me, I might have been dissected by now.”

That witch looks small but is quite powerful. Even though he was injured at the time, he struggled desperately but couldn’t escape, even being easily knocked unconscious.

“Dissection might be unlikely.” Li Xi casually remarks, “Maybe he just wanted to study us casually.”

Talking about Ukel, Li Xi really doesn’t know the reason for him capturing the black-and-white mermaid and turning into his original form buried under the sand. He’s not very concerned. Anyway, everything is in chaos, and Ukel can’t beat him. It won’t stir up any storms.

Duan Zhen is more attentive to this information, “We need to pay attention to the witch. The Mermaid King also seems hostile towards us.”

He thinks for a moment, “Anyway, let’s gather materials quickly.”

No one opposes. After having breakfast, to save time, they eat the compressed fish balls that Li Xi fed them yesterday. The taste is strong, and the mermaids are accustomed to it, but the humans make disgusted faces.

“After turning into mermaids, the taste buds should also change.” Li Xi observes them with interest, “Interesting.”

Others don’t know, but he knows this is a real world, and the potion that transforms humans into mermaids is a real thing. He becomes slightly interested in exploring the mechanism of the potion and decides to ask Ukel about it when the task is almost done.

When he first arrived in this world, he could feel energy entering his body for transformation, but it was gentle, and there was no pain. However, the potion transformation is painful; there must be some difference between the two.

That energy may be related to the sea god they worship.

Li Xi ponders various thoughts while outwardly following Duan Zhen, pulling him along as they head towards the abyss.

Their second material is octopus tentacles, just five of them. So, if they want to save effort this time, they can find a larger octopus and focus on harvesting its tentacles—after all, octopus tentacles are renewable1Octopi can regrow lost limbs, kinda like a starfish!.

The abyss is very dark, different from the seabed’s darkness. It’s thick, dense, and chilling. Just looking at it gives a spine-chilling feeling, as if behind that impenetrable darkness, a giant monster is carefully scrutinizing them.

Author’s Note:

Li Xi looks towards the sea god.

Sea god watching the commotion behind the scenes: … ???

Ngl I understand why Li Xi became interested in Duan Zhen… He’s such a cool ML ^o^
