Duan Zhen took the lead, swimming into the darkness.

Li Xi hurriedly grabbed his sleeve from behind, afraid that he might rush too fast and be taken away by something.

The moment they entered the abyss, everyone felt a drop in temperature. The cold seemed to penetrate into their bones. Even the mermaids in the group couldn’t help but hug themselves.

Duan Zhen was the first to notice and turned to ask Li Xi, “Cold?”

“It’s okay.” Li Xi whispered, “Mermaids have a higher resistance to changes in underwater temperature. Brother Duan, don’t worry.”

The temperature did drop a bit, but he circulated magic in his body, dispelling the chill.

Li Xi slyly took out a ruby-like gem the size of a goose egg and stuffed it into Duan Zhen’s pocket.

Warmth surged, and the intense cold from before receded like a tide.

Duan Zhen looked at Li Xi in surprise.

“Just two pieces, I made them before.” Li Xi raised two fingers to him.

Duan Zhen gently touched the small curls on his forehead, without asking if there were only two pieces. He was willing to protect those people, but it didn’t mean he would arrange everything. After all, this was a world of constant crises, and people had to learn to be self-sufficient.

“Octopuses have eight tentacles and like to ambush in the dark.” Before the lure and attack began, Duan Zhen said seriously, “Always stay vigilant; this concerns our lives.”

During the battle, Duan Zhen might not be able to care for everyone. Moreover, the external danger might not be limited to octopuses; there could be other deep-sea creatures attracted by the commotion.

Li Xi nodded first, “I understand!”

Others also seemed to have no objections. After feeling the atmosphere of the abyss, everyone became extremely vigilant.

In a location pre-investigated by Duan Zhen, he took out the long sword. The sword was not glowing at this moment, looking ordinary, showing no signs of having just beheaded five giant sharks yesterday.

Blood scattered in the water, slowly dissipating.

No one moved; only the sound of water flowing past their ears filled the moment.

Suddenly, Duan Zhen moved. The sword in his hand silently cut in the direction of the water flow, and a large burst of blood blossomed – it was an octopus tentacle!

Li Xi swiftly grabbed it. It felt heavy in his hands, and the tentacle tip was still wriggling as if it hadn’t realized what happened.

Feeling a bit repulsed, he simply tossed it aside.

Others, however, were somewhat puzzled because they hadn’t sensed when the tentacle had attacked. Judging by its length and thickness, it must be from a massive octopus. However, no matter how they observed, they couldn’t see the shadow of the octopus.

“It’s below us,” Duan Zhen said, “The tentacle is quite long, at least three meters. Be careful not to get entangled.”

“Gather together. If someone gets caught, immediately cut off the tentacle,” he directed the group.

After a few failed attacks, either ending in failure or losing a tentacle, there was no more movement on the seabed when three tentacles were piled up.

“Did it run away?” The red-tailed mermaid asked in a low voice, “I heard octopuses are clever; it probably sensed it was losing and quietly slipped away.”

“Possible,” Duan Zhen said.

He frowned, feeling that things might not be so simple. However, as a human, he wasn’t adept at controlling water and couldn’t determine if the octopus was still around.

“Wait a bit longer. If it doesn’t show up, we’ll send the tentacles back and find another place…”

Before he could finish speaking, he sensed a disturbance in the water flow. The movement wasn’t coming towards him; it seemed the octopus realized he was troublesome and shifted its focus to the people behind.

“Spread out!” Duan Zhen shouted.

Mermaids and humans immediately scattered, but it was still too late. One person was wrapped around the waist by a thick tentacle, about to be pulled away in an instant.

When Duan Zhen cut off the tentacle, he felt it was a simple motion. However, when he stepped forward, he realized the tentacle’s speed was so fast that he had no time to react.

Duan Zhen had been paying attention to the situation on that side. Almost as the tentacle wrapped around his waist, he exerted force with his legs and swam towards that side. Although it was perilous, he caught up, cutting off the tentacle and pulling the person out.

Suddenly, he heard a warning, followed by being bumped away.

In a flash, a sapphire-blue fish tail floated by, entangled with the tentacle for a moment before being dragged away due to being overpowered.

“Li Xi!” Duan Zhen felt his heart almost stop beating. His mind went blank, and subconsciously, he followed the trace of that blue color.

His speed couldn’t match the octopus tentacles, and he saw the giant head of the octopus with teeth growing, the mouth wide open, ready to welcome the hard-earned delicacy.

Li Xi’s hand tightly gripped the octopus tentacle. For authenticity, he allowed the suckers to leave gruesome imprints on his body.

This heroic act was impromptu, a coincidence. Discovering that Duan Zhen truly wasn’t aware of the sneak attack from behind, he recklessly collided with him, taking his place and getting caught instead. Anyway, even if he were truly swallowed, a mere deep-sea octopus couldn’t do anything to him.

But he didn’t expect Duan Zhen to be so desperate to save him. In the last moment, the man stepped on the tentacle, turned around, and shielded him in his arms, using his back to face the octopus’s mouth.

Crack—

A crisp cracking sound echoed, followed by a dazzling golden light.

A thick smell of blood permeated the water, and Li Xi even felt as if he were submerged in the blood.

There was silence for a long time, and Duan Zhen remained motionless.

Unable to bear the smell, Li Xi nudged his head against Duan Zhen’s shoulder, trying to peek out and assess the situation. However, the next moment, he was held even tighter, and it seemed like Duan Zhen was embracing him voluntarily for the first time.

Before Li Xi could be too happy about it, he heard Duan Zhen’s somewhat hoarse voice, “You shouldn’t have rushed up like that.”

Resting his head on Duan Zhen’s shoulder, Li Xi closed his eyes, took a moment to compose himself, and then shakily said, “I-I know I caused trouble for you. I didn’t think too much at that moment and just rushed up involuntarily. I’m sorry.”

“You saved me. Why apologize?” Duan Zhen asked in a low voice.

“Even if you were dragged away by the octopus, you could have cut off its tentacle in the first place,” Li Xi said, “You wouldn’t have to use your body to shield me from the octopus like this.”

As he spoke, the urgency in the youth’s voice heightened, “Brother Duan, are you okay?”

His hands were patting around Duan Zhen’s back.

Li Xi knew, of course, that Duan Zhen was fine. The protective charm he gave him could withstand even the teeth of an octopus. However, to feign genuine concern or perhaps just to enjoy a little teasing, he randomly groped around.

Duan Zhen didn’t notice his little trick and thought he had genuinely been frightened. He quickly reassured, “I’m fine. The protective charm you gave me blocked the attack.”

“But it’s still very dangerous,” Li Xi frowned, “You could have used your sword to stab its eyes, or any method other than directly using your body.”

Duan Zhen ruffled his small curls without saying anything.

He was usually rational, but this time, his body acted faster than his thoughts. Of course, he also knew that Li Xi had given him a protective charm. That’s why he made that choice. At that moment, using his body to block the octopus’s teeth and then killing the octopus was the safest approach.

“Let’s go. We’ll take the octopus tentacles back,” Li Xi took the lead, casting a cold glance at the few people not far away who had been observing them silently.

Although it seemed chaotic when he was almost carried away by the tentacle, Li Xi had been observing these people with his magic all along. After he was taken away and Duan Zhen rushed up to save him, instead of scattering in all directions, these people stopped and chose to watch quietly.

If they had any intention of helping, Li Xi wouldn’t be so disgusted with them now.

“Don’t ruin your mood for the sake of others,” Duan Zhen noticed his thoughts, patted his shoulder, and had those people take the tentacles back.

Li Xi reached out and tugged at Duan Zhen’s clothes, “Let’s come back here quietly later. There seems to be something valuable underneath.”

“Okay,” Duan Zhen nodded.

They swam back to the kingdom, piling the tentacles next to the tail of the giant shark.

“Tired to death today. Let’s rest for the remaining time,” the person who was almost carried away by the tentacle spoke up. He lifted his clothes, revealing the reddish-purple circular marks and a circle of welts: “That octopus is too terrifying. Just its tentacle could strangle a person to death.”

Duan Zhen saw it and was momentarily stunned, then turned to look at Li Xi.

“I’m fine,” Li Xi said when he caught his gaze, smiling, “Mermaids have a better constitution than humans. I’m not that fragile. But you must be exhausted today. Let’s go back, eat something, and sleep.”

Duan Zhen pursed his lips and agreed.

They returned to their rooms pretending to be exhausted. Li Xi, at the doorway, peeked inside and gestured to Duan Zhen after a while, “It seems like they’ve really gone to rest. Let’s go quickly.”

“Wait a moment,” Duan Zhen’s eyes slightly darkened, and he pulled the young man over, lifting his veil, “Let me see your injuries.”

Li Xi’s body tensed, and he used his hand to block, “There’s nothing to see.”

He anxiously said, “Male intimacy can be misunderstood. It’s not good to casually lift someone’s clothes!”

Despite his words, he still let go of the hand that was pressing on his clothes. The thin veil was gently lifted, revealing the swollen marks and purple bruises left by the octopus’s suckers.

Seeing those scars on the fair and soft skin, Duan Zhen’s hand that held the veil tightened slightly.

Nervously clutching his fingers, Li Xi said, “See, just look and then let go. Mermaids have good recovery abilities. After sleeping for a night, these marks will all be gone.”

He looked at Duan Zhen’s serious expression and thought the next second he was going to scold him. Unexpectedly, Duan Zhen just gently covered those wounds with his hand, asking in a low voice, “Does it hurt?”

Aaaaaw look at these cuties rushing to protect each other :’))
