Duan Zhen found the switch for the lamp in the room.

Logically, there shouldn’t be anything as advanced as electric lights in this world. However, when he tentatively touched the switch on the wall, the ceiling lit up with a soft glow.

Looking up, he confirmed that there was a night pearl on the ceiling, but he couldn’t understand how it was controllable.

Thinking about the lights he had seen on swords at the hunting ground, Duan Zhen gave up trying to understand the principle behind it.

The strange demeanor of the servant before leaving had caught his attention. With his experiences in various worlds, Duan Zhen had become increasingly sensitive to such matters, feeling that something was amiss. There was surely danger hidden behind the secrets of this world.

He thought of Li Xi’s lack of memory and furrowed his brow slightly, unsure whether to ignore the servant’s warning and go look for him.

As the sky outside grew darker, despite the magical lights illuminating the city, the entire city seemed to be engulfed in darkness, with no glimmer of light visible.

Suddenly, the door clicked, causing Duan Zhen’s muscles to tense. He crouched slightly, ready to attack.

It was Li Xi who entered, dressed in a new outfit and a black robe draped over him.

“What are you standing there for? Come here,” he glanced at Duan Zhen.

Duan Zhen hesitated for a moment before approaching.

Li Xi casually opened his arms, gesturing for Duan Zhen to undress him.

Understanding the situation, Duan Zhen realized that his role as a servant involved taking care of Li Xi’s personal needs, which might provide a convenient opportunity to help him regain his memory.

His mind raced with countless thoughts, but he maintained a calm demeanor, lowering his head to unbutton Li Xi’s clothing.

Underneath the black robe was an intricately decorated white shirt and dark loose trousers. Duan Zhen calmly unbuttoned the shirt, revealing the young man’s jade-like body.

“The nightclothes are in the wardrobe,” Li Xi half-closed his eyes, yawning. “You’ll sleep in the adjacent room tonight.”

The adjacent room was to the left of the main room, with only one door leading to the outside.

Duan Zhen fetched the nightclothes from the wardrobe. It was a long robe made of smooth, soft fabric. As he was about to help Li Xi put it on, the young master reached out to stop him.

“First, take off the pants,” Li Xi said with a displeased expression, extending his hand to halt Duan Zhen.

“…Yes,” Duan Zhen paused.

He bent down, skillfully unfastening Li Xi’s belt and swiftly removing his pants and shoes. Then, as if avoiding eye contact, he immediately stood up to help him into the nightclothes.

Seeing him like this, Li Xi raised an eyebrow, and with a short laugh, he said, “Why are you afraid to look at me?”

Duan Zhen kept his head down. “As a servant, I dare not look directly at Your Grace.”

“Is it that you dare not look at me, or that you dare not look at my body?” Li Xi grabbed his collar, pulling him closer.

Duan Zhen averted his gaze. “Both are the same.”

Li Xi squinted at him, appraisingly. With a brief chuckle, he said, “Alright, I won’t tease you anymore. Go to sleep.”

Duan Zhen nodded in acknowledgment, about to turn off the light when Li Xi suddenly spoke up. “Leave the light on, please.”

“Yes,” Duan Zhen noted this difference in Li Xi’s habit of sleeping with the light on and made a mental note. He then entered the adjacent room, where the bed was placed against the wall. Since there were no windows, the air felt stagnant and heavy.

Duan Zhen cautiously checked under the bed and around the room, ensuring there was nothing amiss, before lying down on the bed.

He noticed how unusually quiet it was in the room. On a normal summer night, there would at least be the chirping of insects or the rustling of leaves, but he heard nothing.

What reassured Duan Zhen was the sound of Li Xi turning in bed and his steady breathing. It seemed that the people outside, due to their amnesia, slept especially soundly. However, Duan Zhen dared not relax. He sat up on the bed, listening intently to the noises outside, ready to react at any sign of trouble.

After an unknown amount of time, he suddenly heard a deep buzzing sound, followed by twelve low chimes. It was the midnight bell.

Soon after, the noise outside grew louder. Initially faint, like someone shuffling up and down the stairs, the footsteps seemed to wander aimlessly around the room.

After a few minutes, Duan Zhen heard similar sounds coming from outside the city. Unlike the footsteps inside the house, these were like the roars of beasts and sharp, unidentified cries.

Duan Zhen slowly sat up on the bed, his brow furrowed, pressing himself against the wall to listen to the commotion outside.

The footsteps were very light but seemed to be converging towards their location. Suddenly, Duan Zhen leaped backward as a pale hand reached in where he had just been listening.

The hand appeared semi-transparent, pale and withered, with long, sharp nails tinged with an unsettling black-purple hue. If Duan Zhen hadn’t dodged, it might have pierced not the wall but his head.

Duan Zhen didn’t move, staring at the point where the hand met the wall, quickly identifying the creature’s identity—undead.

—In this world, after midnight, everyone turns into undead, roaming around seeking the flesh and blood of the living.

Duan Zhen didn’t have any talismans on him at the moment. Seeing the undead attempting to enter directly through the wall, he furrowed his brow.

If the undead could enter the room, then Li Xi, who was sleeping peacefully outside, might be in danger. Although Li Xi’s memory had been replaced, the undead didn’t care about that.

Duan Zhen stepped back to the door and pushed it open, wanting to check on Li Xi’s condition.

To his surprise, as the light from outside shone through the crack in the door, the undead seemed to be scorched by the flame, with faint scorch marks appearing on their skin, quickly retracting their hands.

They feared light?

Duan Zhen relaxed a bit, knowing that at least for now, they were safe inside the room. He took a few steps forward to shake Li Xi awake.

As soon as his hand touched Li Xi’s shoulder, the young man opened his eyes, seemingly disturbed from his sleep, and asked displeasedly, “What’s wrong?”

“Can you hear the sounds outside?” Duan Zhen asked him in a low voice.

Li Xi frowned. “Sounds?”

He listened carefully, then his face changed. “Undead? How could they appear here? Is it some necromancer trying to attack the city while my father is away?”

With that, he lifted the blanket, ready to get out of bed to investigate.

“Wait.” Duan Zhen stopped him. “I just found out that these undead are afraid of light…”

He didn’t finish his sentence before Li Xi interrupted, “You mean, you want me to cower in this small room and watch the people of the Philotte estate be slaughtered by undead?”

Duan Zhen was taken aback, hurriedly following Li Xi. “You don’t need to prepare first?”

“I’m already prepared,” Li Xi replied, grabbing the black robe from the bedside and covering his exposed chest and soft pajamas, pushing open the door to walk out.

“Li… Lord Lance!” Duan Zhen was taken aback, quickly following. “You really don’t need to prepare first?”

“I’m already prepared,” Li Xi replied. He glanced back at Duan Zhen. “If you don’t want to be eaten by undead, keep up.”

Duan Zhen furrowed his brow, but eventually followed Li Xi’s footsteps.

They seemed to shuttle through the darkness, the undead that had just gathered nearby now nowhere to be seen. In the vast space, only the sounds of Li Xi and Duan Zhen echoed.

“Are you going to find Lord Hewlett?” Duan Zhen asked as Li Xi climbed the stairs.

“No,” Li Xi said, circling the spiral staircase with a brisk pace. “I need to go to the rooftop.”

“Is there a device on the rooftop that emits light?” Duan Zhen asked.

“You talk too much,” Li Xi’s tone cooled. “Learning to remain silent when appropriate is the first thing a servant should learn.”

“Yes, I’m very sorry,” Duan Zhen lowered his head.

Hearing his apology, Li Xi’s tone softened slightly. “After all, you just came from the hunting ground. It’s normal not to understand the rules. I’ll have the steward teach you tomorrow.”

Duan Zhen acknowledged and kept a slightly slower pace, observing Li Xi’s demeanor.

Although the young man had just woken up, his hair had been neatly combed at some point. Despite hastily putting on the black robe, there were no wrinkles visible. He stood straight, his steps quick but not anxious, and he moved with ease in the darkness.

Duan Zhen got a better grasp of Li Xi’s current temperament.

The character Li Xi played was the son of a noble duke, greatly spoiled by his family and thus possessing a somewhat arrogant temperament. At the same time, he had received a good education and a strong sense of responsibility, still retaining a softness in his heart.

However… was sleeping with the light on a habit of this character, or was it a safety zone intentionally left by the game for the task giver? This needed further investigation.

Both of them had good physical strength and quickly reached the rooftop. Li Xi stood on the terrace, gazing down at the city full of undead, his lips tightly pressed, a hint of anger flashing across his face.

Duan Zhen quickly surveyed the area. There was nothing on the rooftop.

About to speak up to inquire, he remembered Li Xi’s words earlier and chose to remain silent for the time being, watching Li Xi’s actions.

He saw Li Xi stand still for a moment, extend his hand, mutter some incomprehensible sentences, and then a beam of light shot directly from his fair palm into the sky, rapidly spreading out and illuminating the city as bright as day.

The undead wailed and dissipated under the glaring light.

Li Xi withdrew his hand, turning around to speak, but his body swayed, a sudden and intense dizziness engulfing him. He blinked heavily, feeling the control over his body gradually slipping away, uncontrollably tilting backward.

Duan Zhen, who had been watching him closely, immediately grabbed his hand and pulled him into his arms just before he fell off the rooftop.

Uhm I got a bit used to the casual vibes of the mermaid world lol that hand coming out of the wall is nightmare fuel! But having undeads here kinda reminds me of the necromancer in Clemens’ world…
