The soft smile that accompanied made the words “I believe in you” sound all the more romantic. Even the audience that didn’t know any better couldn’t help gasping in admiration.

From below the stage, Secretary Yan’s face darkened, and he was just about ready to leave the room in a huff.

The cameras kept panning back over to where Ruan Nan stood. At this moment, the fate of S University, and whether they could take home the grand prize for the fourth year in a row, was all up to this audience member.

Qin Julai, who had been staring dutifully at his phone screen, was right about to turn off the stream and even had prepared a series of consolation texts to his sister after he watched her answer incorrectly. But now, he was once again glued to the screen as his excitement resurged.

When Zuo Yanzhen realized that it was Ruan Nan whom Qin Juran sought help from, she couldn’t help tensing up in anticipation as well. She turned to look at Qin Haotian, who seemed even more moved than Qin Juran, his eyes glistening with tears.

The three of them were just as anxious as the rest of the audience, patiently waiting for Ruan Nan’s response.

“3-point question.”

That was a given.

As the questions flashed on the large screen, Qin Juran and Ruan Nan’s eyes were both glued to the screen, until the host clicked the stop button, and all of the S University members jumped up from their seats.

The video camera acutely captured this moment of exhilaration. From below the stage, the audience first noticed S University team’s initial excitement, then looked over to read the question that appeared on the screen. The question topic read, “Music Theory.”

Qin Juran looked across the audience to meet Ruan Nan’s eyes.

The sentence “I will always believe in you” seemed to have brought about a stroke of luck for the two. As the two stared at each other and smiled, a mutual silent understanding seemed to pass over them.

Their victory was practically secured.

Once the competition ended, Qin Juran slipped into her coat, bypassing the bouquets of flowers, the congratulatory applause, and the bright lights and microphone, instead directly walking out from backstage. The audience was exiting in batches from the front door, but Ruan Nan was already waiting in the parking lot behind the auditorium. She smiled towards Qin Juran from where she was leaning against her Porsche.

“Congratulations, Captain Qin.” Ruan Nan smiled as she stretched out her hand.

The corners of Qin Juran’s lips curled, and she grabbed her outstretched hand, lifting it up to plant a gentle kiss on the back of her hand: “Thank you, My Ah-Ruan.”

The two got into the car. Once Ruan Nan began driving, Qin Juran began answering about a hundred calls, including ones from Qin Haotian, Qin Julai, the school counselor, and Secretary Yan.

Just when one of Qin Juran’s calls ended and she wanted to speak to Ruan Nan, another call came through, and every time as soon as she hung up, it immediately began ringing again. Eventually, the two of them ran out of patience and could only laugh. Once Qin Juran held back her frustration and calmly answered the final call from Secretary Yan, she placed her phone down and shut it off.

“You heard?”

Qin Juran glanced at Ruan Nan, who was stifling a laugh.

Secretary Yan sounded like he had been drinking; in addition to thanking Qin Juran in the university’s stead and congratulating her on winning the championship, he also brought up Ruan Nan. He mentioned that he shouldn’t have doubted Ruan Nan, and he never would’ve thought that the final outcome would be thanks to them. Although his words came out awkwardly, his meaning was clear.

So Ruan Nan found this a little funny.

Under the night sky, Ruan Nan asked, “If I didn’t answer correctly today, then things probably wouldn’t have turned out like this.”

For the university, the main priority was preserving its honor. For the audience members, they were only anticipating an entertaining response. However, the only people who cared about these two girls specifically might’ve only been Qin Haotian’s family of three.

Qin Juran didn’t say anything, but her silence suggested agreement.

“Why did you believe in me?” Ruan Nan continued.

“Do I need a reason to believe in Ah-Ruan?”

Unlike her sincere response when she was on the stage, Qin Juran’s current tone carried a hint of playfulness. Ruan Nan was keen to catch a flash of her smile.

Every time this fox vixen was up to something, there was that smile.

“What is it? Did you know that I would get a music theory question?”

The corner of Qin Juran’s mouth lifted. She wasn’t someone who liked to rush into things without thinking of the consequences – at the time, she had considered that if she were to throw this “hot potato” to Ruan Nan and they lost, causing the words “Wrong answer” to appear, then Ruan Nan who had voluntarily raised her hand would be the direct target for criticism.

So while she was mulling over what to do, the next thought that popped into her mind was: why did Ruan Nan have the confidence to volunteer?

Qin Juran quickly recalled the question topics that had appeared before. D University’s team captain had chosen a 3-point technology question earlier, then when he used the chance to revive himself, he received another 2-point technology question. So according to this pattern, Qin Juran’s following question would also be in music theory.

As soon as Ruan Nan saw the expression on Qin Juran’s face, she knew that she had guessed right. She jutted her chin out: “Then even if you knew the next question would be in music theory, why did you still choose me? Wasn’t that Chi Ying girl sitting right beside me?”

“How is that the same?” Hearing the note of sourness in Ruan Nan’s tone, Qin Juran turned to her, brows raised.

“Why wouldn’t it be? She’s even the arts major.”

“Because you’re my girlfriend.”

“Your dating life shouldn’t interfere with the competition.”

“In matters related to Ah-Ruan, nothing else matters.”

Tch, what a sweet talker.

“Qin Juran, do you really think that I’m that easy to harass?” Ruan Nan asked as they were heading upstairs to the apartment.

Qin Juran raised a brow, indicating that she didn’t understand.

“Well, I’m really not that easy to harass. Just then when we were about to leave the auditorium, Chi Ying said something to provoke me.”

“And then?” Qin Juran halted mid-step, feeling a little nervous.

“And then I pulled up her ex-girlfriend’s engagement photos to send her.”

Qin Juran suddenly recalled that Chi Ying had mentioned an ex-girlfriend who moved abroad, but she initially thought nothing of it. Her eyes widened: “So you looked into her?”

Ruan Nan nodded noncommittally. “After I misunderstood her last time, I looked into her. I originally thought that her actions were just one-sided and let it go, but I didn’t expect her to behave like that today, too. So I had to return the favor and rub salt onto her wounds.”

Qin Juran understood Ruan Nan’s personality, so she was certain that if something like this were to happen, it would make sense to suspect her own girlfriend. But since she didn’t even question Qin Juran in the first place, that would mean…..

Qin Juran looped her arms around Ruan Nan from behind, speaking in a low voice beside her ear: “So you didn’t believe it from the start, right? No wonder you were so quick to forgive me at the train station the other day.”

Rather than feeling embarrassed at being exposed, Ruan Nan merely pouted and replied, “And what if I did? Would that make me a bad girl?”

“Mhm, very bad.”

“…….”

“Then don’t hug this bad girl.” Ruan Nan tried to push her away.

“I’m not hugging you, I’m capturing you. And not only that, you’ll need to be punished.” As her voice become more and more suggestive, Ruan Nan immediately understood what Qin Juran was trying to insinuate.

“That’s enough, Qin Juran…”

“I’ll punish you in bed.”

Before the two of them had even taken off their coats, Qin Juran smoothly picked Ruan Nan up and tossed her onto the bed. The lingering cold on their bodies collided with the warmth inside the room, and Qin Juran’s provocative words were like an aphrodisiac. She lightly nibbled on Ruan Nan’s ear, her tongue flitting over the layer of pink.

Ruan Nan’s dress was hiked high over her leg, and she tried to move away, red-faced and panting: “Qin Juran, you said that you wouldn’t before I’m ready…..”

“Correct, I said that.”

“I’m still not prepared yet…..”

“We’re not doing that, Ah-Ruan.” Qin Juran raised her head, her eyes roaming hazily from her earlobes downward.

“Then, then you…..”

“Not that.”

“Just a little kissing.”
