Canary

The morning sun poured into the room, where a few tangled pairs of underwear lay strewn across the carpet.

The white checkered sheets were a tousled mess upon the bed. When Ruan Nan awoke, she found herself still in Qin Juran’s arms. As she glanced down to see the state of her body, she blushed furiously and yearned to slink away.

While Qin Juran still appeared to be asleep, Ruan Nan took the chance to wrap the blanket around her chest, then slowly edged away with her back facing Qin Juran.

Right as she made it to the side of the bed, Qin Juran smoothly stretched her arms around Ruan Nan’s waist and pulled her back.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

“To wash my face.” Ruan Nan buried her face into the blanket, muffling her voice.

“What’s the rush?” Before she could make any more excuses, Qin Juran looped her back into an embrace.

The sunshine reached the bed, highlighting the marks on the sheets, taking Ruan Nan back to the events of last night. Feeling a rush of embarrassment, she buried her face deeper into the blanket: “The sun is burning my butt.”

Qin Juran grazed a hand over her bottom: “Not if it’s covered like this.”

Ruan Nan immediately shook away from her hand, then wrapped the blanket around her face, peering at her dubiously through a slit between the fabric.

Qin Juran propped herself up with one hand, using the other to lazily twirl a lock of Ruan Nan’s curls: “Embarrassed?”

“Mm.” Ruan Nan murmured weakly.

Qin Juran laughed as if she’d heard a joke. “How could you be embarrassed now?”

Ruan Nan widened her eyes: “Why wouldn’t I be?
Qin Juran’s face was of feigned confusion. She shrugged, then leaned in close to Ruan Nan’s ears: “I would’ve thought that with your lovely screams from last night, there’s no way you could be shy about it anymore.”

In a fit of embarrassment, Ruan Nan reached out to lightly slap her, then scrambled to get out of bed and grab her underwear. However, Qin Juran swiftly pulled her back, toying with her like an eagle with its prey: “Did you feel good last night?”

“Stop asking, Qin Juran.”

“What are you supposed to call me?” Young President Qin gripped her wife’s chin in her finger.

“Qin…my darling.”

Ruan Nan’s muffled voice from under the blankets was so sweet that Qin Juran felt her heart jolt when she heard it. She couldn’t help laughing: “How soft.”

“Ah-Ruan, am I soft?”

Ruan Nan shook her head, her back still turned against her.

“I didn’t even specify where.”

“Then where exactly…do you mean?”

“My tongue. Is my tongue soft?”

Ruan Nan jerked up, feeling the memories of last night flash through her mind like a bolt of lightning. A tingling sensation washed over her, and she suddenly felt devoid of all energy. Rather than toying with Qin Juran, she only wanted to run away.

However, Qin Juran, the foxy vixen, derived her entire day’s joy and excitement from teasing Ruan Nan. She leaned into Ruan Nan’s ear and muttered: “But not as soft as Ah-Ruan’s lips.”

Once the two of them got up and washed up, Qin Juran turned on the television to see it currently broadcasting the competition show from last night. They had just gotten to the point where Qin Juran answered the last 3-point question incorrectly. Under the glaring strobe lights, Qin Juran’s face looked ashen on the screen.

Qin Juran couldn’t hold back her sneer: “The lighting isn’t very generous.”

Ruan Nan laughed at her: “You were just really that nervous at the time!”

“No way. Knowing that you were down in the audience, I wasn’t wavering at all. Ah-Ruan, I’m sorry that I called you out the other day for not going abroad because of me. It was only until that moment up on the stage that I realized just how much I needed you, Ah-Ruan.”

In her blue shirtdress, leaning against the windowsill, the bright sun behind her cast a warm glow around her.

Ruan Nan smiled. She had no intention of telling her just how much she had secretly studied the review guide just to be prepared for the “coincidence” that day.

Qin Juran and her entrepreneurship team had already rented out an office in a building near S University, and they were planning on operating as a trial business starting from that day on. Earlier, one of the male students in the group had received some funding from an investor, and as long as their group proceeded smoothly, there was a high possibility that they could apply to enroll themselves as a legitimate business within the next semester.

After the two of them got ready, they planned on heading towards the office together. Since there weren’t that many helping hands in the initial stages, Ruan Nan was also going to help them take care of some things or do some planning.

Qin Juran first grabbed the keys to retrieve the car. Once Ruan Nan made it downstairs and got in, she drove straight to the office building. Ruan Nan sat calmly in her seat, but as they were getting closer to the office, she began to hesitate: “Are you sure it’s alright if I go in with you on your first day of work?”

Qin Juran raised an eyebrow: “It’s an honor for the entire company to be visited by the President’s wife.”

Ruan Nan giggled, feeling appeased. She tugged at Qin Juran’s sleeve: “Are you sure you don’t want me to invest with you? I’m also studying finance, and I have faith in anything you do.”

Qin Juran parked the car, then rubbed Ruan Nan’s hair. She had mentioned to Qin Juran about “investing together” earlier, but it’d mostly be on a ten-to-one scale: “Since I haven’t determined the risk and reward yet, I can’t let Ah-Ruan take the chance.”

Ruan Nan pouted: “Then you’d take the chance alone?”

“I’m not afraid.”

“No matter what happens, I know you’ll have my back.”

The next few months of busy work flew by quickly, as everyone on the team was working hard and producing great output. Qin Juran was putting her own full potential to use, and at the same time, working to test the limits of her team members to play up to their versatility and strengths. In the past month, she had returned to A district a few times, and along with S District, the team had spread news of their ambitions throughout the towns and quickly became hot topics to watch out for.

One of the members, Xiajin, was already an influencer with a large fan base, so she easily helped to attract a large following for their social media account.

As the boy who was planning on investing saw the growing potential of this team, he became even more passionately involved. The students in the team all represented innovative entrepreneurs of their university, so aside from private investments, according to S University’s tradition, they were all eligible to receive a monetary award to support their ventures for the next semester.

From the start, Qin Juran took on the core leadership role of their team. Ever since Xia Jin became more and more popular, and the boy’s investments were practically solidified, there was a slight shift within the dynamic of the entire team.

Even Ruan Nan was able to feel it.

In her eyes, whether it came to eloquence or capability, or even outer appearance, Qin Juran was insurmountable in all areas against Xia Jin. If only she was willing to appear before the camera, using her abilities to attract more popularity, she could easily regain her core position within the team.

However, the fact that Qin Juran didn’t seem to want to do that for the time being must mean that she had her own plans and concerns.

Ruan Nan didn’t press her with questions. Whenever she was bored, she’d pull out her guitar and practice some songs. She was still friendly with the band members of “Midsummer,” so if anything, they could all perform to help her boost popularity. Anyways, she would be prepared; if Qin Juran were to ever need their assistance, they would make an appearance.

Initially, Qin Juran had no intention of being on camera. However, one time Xia Jin’s live broadcast just happened to coincide with Ruan Nan picking up Qin Juran. In the background of her stream, a beautiful, flashy Porsche car pulled up in the background, and soon after, Qin Juran could be seen dressed in her high heels and trench coat stepping into the car.

The sharp viewers easily recognized the “beautiful top student championship winner,” and upon seeing such a beautiful university student getting into such a luxurious car, it spawned all kinds of controversial speculations.

At nighttime, Xia Jin sent her a message. When Qin Juran opened up their social media account, the few comments about Xia Jin were drowning in comments about Qin Juran’s mysterious “sugar daddy.”

Qin Juran chuckled while munching on an orange. Ruan Nan had just come out of the shower, still wrapped in her towel, and leaned over Qin Juran’s shoulder to glance at what she was looking at on the phone screen. She began to frown as she read, but seeing Qin Juran’s amused expression, she relaxed; she was never one to care about what other people thought of her.

Ruan Nan sat on the couch and began to apply body cream. Qin Juran fed her a slice of orange and pointed to a comment on her phone: “Look at this one, Ah-Ruan. I think it sounds about right.”

“This kind of beautiful, smart student knows exactly what she wants for herself, whether it is outer appearance or acting skills. University is but merely a launch pad for her. To be raised up to the top of the ranks by a financial sponsor is clearly the most sensible choice. What kind of man could resist a canary?”

“How is it right?” Ruan Nan narrowed her eyes at her.

“Aside from the gender, everything else checks out. I’m living in Ah-Ruan’s home, driving Ah-Ruan’s car, and most of my expenses are being paid for by Ah-Ruan—aren’t I the mistress that Ah-Ruan is sponsoring?”

Ruan Nan smirked. Rather than being embarrassed, she played along, hooking a finger under Qin Juran’s chin: “So now that you know your place, I’ll presume that you understand just what’s expected of you, right?”

“Could you elaborate on that, Miss Ruan?”

Ruan Nan sneered, straightening her back so that she was looking down her nose at Qin Juran:  “The foxy vixen doesn’t need to act so naïve all of a sudden. You, should be on the bottom.”

In an instant, a mischievous expression appeared on Qin Juran’s face. She whispered into Ruan Nan’s ear: “Miss Ruan, I never realized it before. Since when did you start wanting to sleep with me?”

The smirk on Ruan Nan’s face grew. In a low voice, she muttered: “Ever since the first night you climbed into my bed.”

Ruan Nan lifted both of her knees onto the sofa and wrapped her arms around Qin Juran’s neck. She wanted to continue to ride the momentum, but Qin Juran wasn’t going to let her. Instead, she popped the last orange slice into Ruan Nan’s mouth in such a deliberately brash manner that a stream of orange juice spurted onto Ruan Nan’s face. Ruan Nan yelped in surprise, jumping up to find a napkin to wipe herself with.

Qin Juran proceeded to step back and cross her arms, watching Ruan Nan as she swallowed the orange. Her eyes were a little moist from coughing, and she looked a little helpless as she wiped the juice off her mouth. Qin Juran stepped closer and lightly pat Ruan Nan’s face: “Even like this, you still want to sleep with me?”
