Chapter 1: Borrowing the corpse for the soul (1)

Molin was a jungle with dense vegetation. A hundred years ago, this place was inaccessible because many wild beasts roamed within the mountains, and ordinary people would not dare venture in too deep.

In ancient chinese legends, Molin was also one of the favorite birthplaces of many mythical tales. Even today, when old people would occasionally tell a story to their grandchildren, the first sentence was usually along the lines of:

“A long time ago, a monster emerged out of Molin …”

But these were only stories. In the present era where developers were eager to convert all vacant lands into housing, even a monster-ridden Molin had become more than half-urbanized.

The relatively flat grounds on the outer parts of Molin were converted into vacation villas for the rich, while the inner parts of the forest were fortunately protected by the country because it inhabited various rare plants. One of the most well-known ones was a cedar tree that was nearly six hundred-years-old, that grew out of a sinkhole located at the heart of the Molin.

The cedar tree was tall, sturdy, and ancient. Its surroundings emitted an aura that was as mysterious and mesmerizing as its countless annual tree rings.

By the time Mi Wan was found, she had just climbed out of the sinkhole while sporting a hole in her skull, making her brain feel breezy in the cold morning. Although she had used spiritual force to stop the bleeding, the dried blood had spread from her collar down to the lower half of the body. She looked like she was close to death’s door.

“Miss, what happened to you?” A middle-aged man in his fifties frantically approached Mi Wan, and when he got close enough to see Mi Wan’s tragic state, he was alarmed.

“Uh… Last night I accidentally slipped and fell into the bottom of the sinkhole.” Mi Wan knew this man. His name was Ye Feng; the butler serving the house of this present body.

That’s right, though nothing had changed with the physical body of the current Mi Wan, the soul was of a completely different person.

Her original name was Mi Wan, Mi for rice, and Wan for bowl, and she was a demon hunter. While hunting for demons five hundred years ago, she was ambushed by a group of them and was eventually killed in battle.

After her death, due to the extensive demon power that lingered around her, her soul could not be reborn, and she was stuck there for five hundred years; until about two hours ago. If she were to calculate from the present, it was about five hours ago when the original owner of this body fell into the sinkhole.

For reasons unknown, the original owner was somehow able to perfectly avoid all the branches and leaves of the six-hundred-year-old cedar tree, landing right beside it, and died on the spot.

When the previous owner of the body fell, she cracked her head on a rock on the ground. Her blood flowed and stained the roots of the cedar tree, which awakened her.

At that time, Mi Wan was sound asleep when suddenly, she felt like she was being violently sucked away, followed by a rush of pain. Having not felt any pain for five hundred years, she woke up instantly from the agony.

Fortunately, she was often injured in her past demon hunting days, and whenever something felt bad, it could usually be healed with spiritual force. That was how she managed to avoid the tragedy of dying right after coming back to life.

When Butler Ye saw that his lady was seriously hurt, he quickly ushered her back to the villa for treatment. Only after confirming that Mi Wan would not die immediately did he seem to feel better. Butler Ye then asked: “Miss, why were you up on the mountains in the middle of the night?”

How did she end up in the mountains? Mi Wan searched through her memories and recalled the reason: “I was experiencing addiction withdrawal and wanted to buy white powder.”

When Mi Wan possessed this body, she immediately realized that she was poisoned. At first, she panicked and waited until she finished loading all of the original body’s memories. Once she realized she could overcome this type of poison, she calmed down instantly. As for the painful memories of detoxification left behind by the original host, Mi Wan was not at all bothered by them.

Mi Wan did not wish to cast judgement on the original owner of this body. After all, she was only able to resurrect with the help of their body. In a sense, she had taken advantage of their death by taking over their body. The final memories of the original host were regrets of turning to drugs for the sake of losing weight, so regardless if it was for the previous owner or for herself, she must purge this poison.

But… Do fat people today have to take drugs in order to lose weight? Thinking about the conditions back in her days, it was a privilege to be able to fill your belly, much less being worried about losing weight. Mi Wan rubbed her fleshy stomach, feeling extremely pleased with her little pudgy belly.

Mmhmm, you could tell with one look that this one came from a nice family that was never worried about food and drink.

Not knowing what was currently going through Mi Wan’s mind, Butler Ye immediately turned sullen by her reply. Although he had more or less guessed as much, and even if going out to buy white powder was a valid reason, who had the audacity to be this straightforward about it?

Butler Ye could not be bothered to lecture Mi Wan, and directly reported the incident to the First Young Master: “Young Master, the young lady sneaked out last night to buy white powder, got lost in the mountains, and accidentally hit her head. The injury is serious. She needs to return to the city and get treated at the hospital.”

“Accident? I think she hit it on purpose so she could come back.”

Butler Ye did not reply, because truthfully, he had the same suspicions. Ever since she was sent to the mountains for rehabilitation, Mi Wan had committed self-harm on several occasions. The Mi family sent Mi Wan to the mountains for rehabilitation in order to sever all her connections with drugs, thinking that she would kick the habit after being locked up for half a year. They never expected that the pain-averse Mi Wan would be desperate enough to commit self-harm. The last few times she had cut her wrists with broken glass, and this time she jumped off a cliff.

Recalling how terrifying it was while he searched for her, Butler Ye was still feeling anxious. Even though Mi Wan was seeking death for herself, she must not succeed while under his care.

“Forget it, just send her to the hospital.” The man on the other end of the phone spoke up again: “Once she’s recovered, bring her back for drug rehabilitation.”

“Understood.”

Butler Ye hung up the phone and turned to glance at a certain person with a ring of gauze wrapped around her head and let out another sigh. Mi Wan was also a child he had watched growing up. Though not as bright nor pleasing as the First and Second Young Master, he couldn’t fathom how she suddenly turned out like this.

“I’m hungry~~” After one night, no, technically, it was almost five hundred years since Mi Wan ate anything. She was so hungry to the point that she could not be bothered with Butler Ye’s mental state, with only food on her mind.

“You must quickly go to the hospital. Your wound is too deep. It’s a miracle that the bleeding has stopped. You must get a thorough checkup at the hospital to see if you have suffered any brain injuries.”

Though Dr. Zhao was an addiction specialist, he still had basic medical knowledge. While looking over the wound, he thought he saw brain fluid, and it scared him so much that his hands never stopped shaking, fearing that Mi Wan could drop dead at any moment while he was in the process of bandaging her.

“We’ll leave after we eat.” Mi Wan could not see it, so naturally, she did not know that her brain fluids were almost leaking out, and it wouldn’t matter even if she did. As long as she was not dead, and after she had a full meal, she could heal any external wounds with her spiritual energy and recover quickly.

So, when the emergency number 120 first-aid crew arrived at the door, Mi Wan was still eating buns at the dining table.

Everyone: … (Who said her brain fluids were almost spilling out? )
