chapter hundred and thirty nine: The truth

Elliott and Alexander fought with swords for quite some time but somehow along the way it stopped being a means to hurt Alexander but to show off skills.

"If you keep leaving your belly unprotected, I might just attack it. Lower your sword just a little bit, Elliott" Alexander advised him.

Elliott lowered his sword and they continued fighting.

"You are quick on your feet, Alexander and it's great but when you turn, for a quick second a skilled fighter can seriously injure your arm. I am almost sure you got that cut on your arm because of that tiny mistake. It's dangerous, if the cut was a little bit higher, you would have bleed faster than a hunted boar"

Alexander smiled and nodded.

"Go on" He grinned.

"I just told you your weakness. What else do you want?" Elliott asked him as he feigned ignorance.

"A solution on how to overcome the weakness?" Alexander's voice was slightly raised.

"No. I might still have the need to fight you in the future. Because if you are married to my sister, sooner or later you will realize she is a handful and do something to her that I will be forced to fight you. It's a certain" Elliott told him.

"She tried to kill me at least three times. She broke two of Aradale's sacred traditions in a week and she is Janessa. Only a fool would expect her to be normal" Alexander told his brother in law.

"True. Wow! She really did make your life a living hell" Elliott laughed heartily. It sounded just like his sister.

Then he watched Alexander keenly. The way he talked about Jamie was obvious even though he tried to hide it.

"You are in love with my sister!" Elliott was surprised.

Alexander was mute for some minutes before he answered.

"It's none of your business"

"Which roughly translate to yes" Elliott was quiet before he added sincerely "Good for you, brother"

"More fighting and less yapping" Alexander said and both men laughed.

Later, in the evening as Alexander had officially exhausted all excuses to stay away from his wife's childhood bed chamber, he walked Inside. He was ready to admit his fears to her and apologize for his inaccurate assumptions.

"Monisha, I am..." Alexander looked around but the room was empty.

"Janessa!" He checked the inner room but she was gone.

He noticed the window soon after.

Bollocks! She succeeded in climbing out through the window and now, she is gone. Attempting a journey to the isle of the blessed was a dangerous undertaking for anyone especially for a Queen, for once Alexander wished his wife would be a normal boring wife.

(The Queen is gone. Meet me in the stable in a minute. Hurry!)

Alexander ordered his commanders via the mind link.

When he got there, Semeen and Blake were there waiting for him and somehow, so was sir Walters.

"Sir Walters, I don't need you. You may take your leave" Alexander didn't have time for explanation.

"I am the king's shadow. I have to be wherever you are, your highness"

"I don't have time for this. Don't follow me. It's an order" Alexander mounted the horse and so did the other two werewolves.

"I know what you are. We have for quite some time now" Walters said in a calm voice.

"What are you talking about?" Alexander roared at him.

"I know that every full moon, that you are not yourself and you transform into a creature of the night. I am breaking a promise by telling you that I am aware of your.... predicament but only because it's much worse to watch my king ride off alone in the night" Walters knew that he may have bitten more than he can chew.

The king could easily rip his throat out. Alexander was horrified. Exactly how many people knew and how long they have kept it from him. He had about a million questions but his wife was missing.

"Follow!" Alexander turned around and rode off.

Walters mounted a horse and followed right behind.

Jamie stopped for a second for directions. The place she was now looked unfamiliar, according to the map she was holding she should be by the edge of the river and she should be canoeing to the isle of the blessed but she wasn't.

She was on dry ground and there was nothing for distance.

"Bloody hell! I am lost" Jamie registered and said out loud.

She didn't want to panic. She turned around to take the path behind. She was going back home before it was too late.

Jamie was half way back when she realized that she didn't know the way back either. She came down from the horse to look around. The place looked deserted and barren except for the oak tree standing in the middle.

Somehow, the place seemed to have daylight. Jamie was terrified. Maybe she was dreaming. Maybe she never even left her father's castle.

"Hello!" Her voice echoed throughout the place.

"Hello!" Someone or something called back.

Jamie's heart pounded outrageously as she looked around for the voice.

"Come" the voice ordered her

"Who are you?" Jamie asked as she looked around the place once again.

"Everyone calls me Red. I guess it's because I have a thing for red dresses but my name is..."

"I don't care. What do you want? What is going on? Where am I?" Jamie asked.

"Come closer!" Red told her.

"Where..." Jamie turned around and she was by the lone oak tree.

The woman in red that they encountered before was behind her.

"What is happening?" Jamie whispered.

She thought she would pass out with the way her heart was pounding so fast.

"I am here to answer your questions. But you better hurry!" Red said in a playful voice.

"Where am I?"

"I created this space so we can talk to each other" Red answered.

"So, where am I really?"

"You are wasting time with irrelevant questions. Fine, your body is unconscious somewhere but your mind is here with me. Hurry, ask away. I can't keep this up forever" Red warned her.

"What am I?"

"You are the destined Queen of the West." Red answered.

"Are you saying it's my destiny to be Alexander's wife?" Jamie was surprised.

"Everything is prewritten. We have fate and destinies and we can't out run those" Red answered her "Come Jamie, ask the question I brought you here to ask"

"You know what my husband is. I can hear their inner voice just like I can hear yours loud and clear. I can see a person's worst moment...their most painful past and I have these powers over Alexander. I can control him and his wolf, cause them to merge despite the curse...make him transform with a call. I need answers. Am I human or am I something worse?"

Jamie waited for the answer but the woman in red simply smiled.

"You look just like your mother. You have her curiosity and her heart too, Jamie"

"You know my mother?"

It was the first time someone had talked about the banished Queen to her. In Namura, everyone walked on eggshells around the topic. Even her father hardly talked about her.

"If you knew her....tell me about her '' Jamie moved closer. Maybe for once she would get a straightforward answer from someone about Queen Lisabeth.

"Beth was kind. You have most of her qualities including the ability to fall hopelessly in love with the wrong kind of man" The woman in Red wasn't smiling anymore.

And so was Jamie. "You are contradicting yourself. You said I was destined to be his Queen and now you say he is the wrong man for me. Pick an opinion and do me a favor... stick to it!" Jamie stood with her fist tightly clenched by her side. Her shoulders were slightly rolled back as she glared at the woman in red.

She hated that Red wasn't telling her anything useful and she was taking bad of the husband she cared about. A man that loved her unconditionally.

The woman in red was quiet. She didn't react to Jamie's outburst, she just observed Jamie with a causal curiosity.

Jamie turned around and started walking away.

"You don't have any answers for me. I have wasted my time and risked my life for nothing" Jamie pushed her short red hair behind her ear as she walked towards her horse, figment of imagination or not she was getting out this place.

"I see you inherited your father's anger" Red yelled after her.

"Yeah! Yeah! Let's talk about how uncanny King Jared and I look" Jamie yelled back sarcastically.

"Your father is not King Jared. His name was... Elijah"

Jamie stopped. Nobody apart from herself knew who she was, nobody knew she wasn't King Jared's biological daughter. She turned around and walked back to her.

"Tell me everything!" Jamie demanded.

"You are not asking the right question" The woman insisted.

"What am I?" Jamie asked finally.
