Chapter hundred and fifty four: things we want but can't have.

"Why are you standing so far away from me?" Jamie asked him.

"I am trying to think" Alexander murmured. He was still panting.

"I want you, sweetheart" Jamie was calm but in turmoil.

"I know that, too" He answered in a hoarse voice.

It was unbearable. He hated this. He hated everything.

"Kiss me, Alexander" she demanded with conviction.

"No"

"No? I am…am…I need you" Jamie couldn't believe the height of selfishness the man before her was displaying. It made her furious.

"I am sorry but I can't make love to you before going off to war. It's against the rules and it might get me killed" He lied again.

"Can you…can you put back your clothes on, please?" He asked her.

Jamie reluctantly wore her clothes.

Alexander looked at her, he could see the hurt, the sadness and the terror in her eyes. She was terrified of dying.

He moved closer to her. His eyes tried to hide the tears that were beginning to emerge.

"I love you more, Jamie"

He turned and walked out.

Jamie ignored the voice at the back of her head whispering to her that Alexander knows about the real cure.

She ignored it because it was easier and he couldn't read her mind.

With the binding ritual called off, she stripped from the flimsy white underdress she was wearing but instead of wearing a dress, she slipped back into her old clothes and took her veil.

She opened the door and she got herself a horse in the stable.

Jamie went to the dead zone to be with the werewolves. At least as their Luna, she was allowed to fight.

Alexander pushed what happened in his wife's chamber to the back of his head. If he thought about it much then he would have to acknowledge that he almost killed his wife. He almost lost control of his senses for a brief moment there and he would have to admit to himself that he placed his needs before her life.

He made it all the way to the house of Judd. He waited in the common area while a servant fetched his brother.

"Your highness" Judd was surprised and he bowed to him.

It was the first time the king was coming to his house.

Alexander smiled even though he didn't feel like it.

"You can call me by my name, Luther. You are family"

"Aren't you supposed to be surrounded by lords of noble houses in preparation for your binding ritual to the Queen?" Judd asked him.

Alexander's smile didn't waiver. He was afraid that if it did, then he would let his true feelings show.

He was King, his feelings didn't matter.

"The ritual is cancelled, brother"

"Stop calling me that!" Judd blurted out before he could stop himself.

"Why? You are my brother aren't you? It's no disrespect, Luther. I call Rosemund, little one. She is the crown princess and she is not little" Alexander tried to reason with him.

Luther didn't waver. He stood his ground and he demanded to be addressed as Luther or Judd.

"There are a lot of things in my life that I don't understand at the moment and you won't be one of them. Tell me why you object so much about being addressed as my brother…you know the world would be easy if everyone came clean about their secrets"

"So, why not tell everyone that you are a werewolf? Why do you get to keep your secret and I don't?" Judd asked him.

Alexander stood up from the wooden chair he sat on.

He wondered why he wasn't fuming with anger, it didn't make any sense. He should be storming out of here with his nostrils flaring and his fist clenched but instead he was staring at his knight with the same mellowed irritation he used with Rosemund whenever she crosses a line.

"Alright, Sir Judd. Let's do it your way" Alexander was almost at the door when he turned around "Meanwhile do your job and rally up my soldiers and a few knights. Two battalion is enough, it's only Koi we are taking back"

Luther slumped on the chair immediately the king left. He heard footsteps and he turned around, Eileen was standing there.

"The king is going to get your kingdom…"

"I know! I heard everything. What is wrong with you, Luther?" Eileen screamed at him.

"I don't know what you are talking about" Judd decided to play dumb.

"I have never told you this but I had two brothers. They are all dead now but they weren't really my family, never acknowledged me as one of them or stood still long enough to see me. Their rejection didn't stop me from trying but there comes a time when one just has to take a hint…I did take that hint and I stopped trying. Two years later, they were gone…they were all gone and I was queen. I am never going to have a real family but you can, Luther. And Alexander, he is not going to be here forever. He is fading away and soon, there will be nothing left of him for you to love"

Eileen touched his cheek tenderly. Her eyes contained a glimmer of tears.

"In truth, I will choose having a real family than to be Queen any day of the week" Eileen told him.

"You and I are family, Eileen, aren't we?" Judd asked her.

"You don't love me, Luther but I hope one day, when I am with child…. your child, my heir that I would have a real chance at having a family again. You might not like the idea of your offspring not taking the name of the house of Judd but you will love him or her nevertheless, because I have to believe that you are better than your father…better than my father too"

Eileen kissed his lips softly without hesitation.

"Don't get killed in Koi, husband" she turned and she walked back into the inner chamber.

"I don't hate my brother. I just don't like the word illegitimate" Judd murmured to himself.

He knew that as a Judd, he had the respect and the admiration of his men and Western hemisphere. It was all he had for years, he was the head and lord of the house of Judd yet he hardly interacted with his family and half of them just like his cousin, Fredrick Judd had a bone to pick with him.

If he suddenly became the illegitimate son of a tyrant, he can't control the outcome or how people would react. Judd didn't hate having a new brother and sister, he simply hated not being a Judd.

Judd sent word to have two battalions ready by the order of Alexander, King of Aradale and over West.

As his servant prepared him for war, making sure that every knightly armor was in place and every buckle was tightly laced together, his wife came in to see him one last time.

She was holding the scepter of Koi, she was officially giving Judd the authority to fight in her name.

"Thank you" she whispered to him.

Eileen took the red scarf around her neck and she gave it to Judd.

"What's this for?" He asked her.

"It belonged to my mother. Giive it back to me as soon as you come back home to me. It's the only thing I have of her, Luther"

Eileen knew she was saying 'come back home to me' to her husband. He might not love her but a living husband got to be better than a dead one.

Judd cupped her cheek with his right hand, then he lowered his face and grazed her mouth softly before he kissed her properly.

"Till we meet again, her Majesty"

"Till we meet again, Sir Judd"

Judd picked up his sword and left.

He was with half of the king's personal knight when Alexander came out to lead his army.

He nodded at Judd like a king would when telling a lead knight to take charge of an army.

"Forward…match!" Judd yelled and everyone took off.

When they got to Koi two hours later, they saw the army of Koi, they were about half of their army waiting for them.

Judd came down from his horse and so did Alexander. They walked to a distance to negotiate terms of surrender, if it was on the table.

"On behalf of Alexander, King of the Western hemisphere and Eileen, the rightful Queen of Koi, we will not accept your surrender until the mastermind behind the attempted murder of your rightfully Queen is produced. You have an hour" Judd's voice was so loud that the soldiers of Koi heard him.

Alexander started walking back to his horse and Judd followed behind.

"I don't remember giving those orders, Knight" His voice was mellow but the lines on his hand said he was furious.

"They tried to kill Eileen" Judd whispered back.

Alexander stopped walking and looked at him.

"Your job is to follow my orders. There are no grey areas and there are certainly no exceptions. Your loyalty is to me, my orders are to be followed to a T." Alexander resumed walking after he touched Judd's shoulder to mask the fact that he was chastising him to both his army and the kingdom of Koi.

"Effective immediately you are suspended and hereby relieved of your command of my army. You are no longer my lead knight, Sir Judd'' Alexander kept walking.. He didn't slow down for Judd to ask more questions.
