Chapter hundred and sixty five: Daughters of nobody.

"You think I am made of stone?" Jamie asked Rosemund.

"Why haven't you cried yet, Janessa? Does my brother mean so little to you that you can function so well when you know that every day he spends out there he could die? Why are you made of stone?" Rosemund yelled even more.

Jamie watched her ungrateful sister in law. She would have loved nothing more than to say a word or two to the spoiled brat but Jamie understood that everything she was saying was coming from a place of pain and frustration.

Rosemund was ruling a kingdom in a time of war something she was too young to concern herself with and so Jamie decided to cut her some slack. But that didn't last long because of Rosemund's next statement.

"First, it was your sister Arabella and her complicated disappearance which caused my brother his reputation and then it was you and your shenanigans. What is it with Eastern Royalties?!" Rosemund told her in an icy voice.

Jamie dropped the scroll she was holding on the table and focused on Rosemund.

"You still need to talk to the ranked ladies in thirty minutes. I was going to do that for you but on a second, clean up your own mess"

Jamie was almost out the door when she turned around to say one last thing to Rosemund.

"And the next time you talk about my sister in a disrespectful tone, Rosemund, you will lose a tooth or more. I don't care if you are sitting on the throne or not. But here is some free advice, quit whimpering and do your bloody job!"

Jamie walked away. She knew that her anger was just going to get worse but she had more important things to focus on. With the war still recruiting more and more soldiers, a new breed of menace was terrorizing Aradale. They were a group of misfits called the resistance.

What they were resisting, Jamie has no idea but food supply enroute to camps had been robbed severally and there had been rare cases of kidnappings too.

Jamie needed to deal with it since Rosemund was too tired from running the hemisphere.

Jamie made it all the way to the pack house to have a talk with the seven commanders and wolves warriors. But she was distracted by Semeen.

Semeen was training the younger girls when Luna arrived.

"Luna"

"Hey, Semeen. I need more wolves patrolling Aradale…in their human forms. I don't want a smaller enemy with sizable followers to infiltrate the castle. Can you handle it?" Jamie asked and got down to join the training.

"Yes, Luna"

She had insisted that young girls receive the same training as the lads and Jamie was surprised when she was told that everyone was trained the same.

It was settled. She loved the pack rule more than the ridiculous rule in Derkal.

"How long has it been?" Semeen asked Jamie.

Jamie knew that Semeen was talking about the last time Alexander reached out to her.

"Five days" Jamie murmured and adjusted a younger girl's fist.

"He is just busy with war, I am sure that as soon as he can he will reach out to you" Semeen wanted to sound hopeful but her voice was too flat to believe.

"I don't know, Semeen. He is hearing more and more voices everyday. He is going mad and the last time we spoke, he thinks it might be the best thing for the war if he turns into a murderous animal" Jamie paired two teenagers to fight each and she took a step back.

Semeen exhaled. Standing down when there was a war to be fought was not her moment, she had to convince the queen Luna to do something about it.

"We have to fight with the King. Just give the orders, Luna" Semeen moved closer to Jamie.

"No. This is not the pack's business" Jamie answered and looked away.

"We are losing!"

"We are fighting seven kingdoms and their northern Allies at once. We are doing the best we can. Stand down, commander and please, have some faith in the Alpha King. He knows what he is doing!" Jamie said through her clenched jaw.

"He is losing his mind!" Semeen couldn't stop herself from yelling in frustration.

Jamie came closer and sent a murderous glare to Semeen.

"I said stand down!" Jamie ordered her.

It was still a standoff when they heard the galloping of a horse coming towards them. They both turned around and it was Ursla.

Ursla came down from the horse and ran to the Queen.

"Ursla, what is it?" Jamie turned her attention to her best friend.

"It's the crown princess. She is not in the castle. I have looked everywhere" Ursla answered with an apprehensive look on her face.

"She is not supposed to leave the castle without my permission!" Semeen yelled at no one in particular.

"Yet, she did" Ursla stated the obvious.

(Where is the Alpha Princess?) Semeen asked all the werewolves she posted outside the castle.

There was no answer.

Jamie took off towards the horse Ursla came down from. She mounted it.

"Where are you going?" Ursla asked her.

"To find Rosemund. I am not telling Alexander that I lost his little sister when he is fighting a war!" .

"Wait! You can't go alone" Semeen tried to stop her but it was too late.

She turned to Ursla "Gather the rest of the commanders, if the Alpha Princess is missing then it's pack business. Tell Blake he is in charge in my absence"

Semeen wanted to go after the Queen herself but Ursla beat her to the only other horse in the arena.

"Last I checked, I wasn't a werewolf and I don't take orders from you. You are worried about the princess. I am worried about my crazy best friend"

Ursla rode off after the Queen. When she turned around, Semeen was running beside her in her wolf form.

God! She was angry and fast…faster than the horse she was on.

***

"What am I doing?" Rosemund asked herself but it didn't stop her from dressing up in a casual looking dress that did not give out her identity as the crown princess.

She knew she had to get away from everything.

After Jamie left her in the king's court, it dawned on the young girl that she may have sabotaged the only person looking out for her.

Rosemund didn't understand why she had attacked the only person that cared enough for her interest to help her.

It was just that whenever she sees Jamie, being strong and brave, she always feels alone in her misery.

She just needed to know that she wasn't the only one who was sick to the stomach about the war and the fact that their armies were spreading thin.

And somehow, after the argument with her sister in law, she found herself lacing the meat she sent to the patrolling werewolves with a sleeping potion.

It was completely reckless and stupid, even Rosemund acknowledged that but she just needed to get away to think and she couldn't get past the wolves without being turned around on Semeen's orders.

She slipped out through the garden and she made it as far as to the creek before she stopped and she sat there with her feet dipped in the shallow water.

It was stupid.

She hated bodies of water after the ordeal she suffered in the hands of her father but somehow choosing the danger she was putting herself into, made Rosemund feel like she was in control.

She sat there for a while just listening to the birds sing in the trees and the sound of the clashing water.

It was soothing and relaxing.

Rosemund laid on her back and for a while, she wasn't the authority over Aradale and the west. For a minute, she wasn't the girl that lost her mother at a young age or her father not soon enough.

She wasn't worried about the kingdom or Judd or Alexander.

She was just Rosemund, a nobody and she was free.

But sometimes, freedom always comes at a heavy price, for Rosemund it was a snap of a twig. She opened her eyes and turned around.

At first, it was goosebumps on her arms and slowly, it spread to the rest of her body. She stood up but maybe she stood up too fast and for a second she lost her balance as the creek twirled.

She found her balance soon enough but the fear that sent spider-like fingers down her spine remained.

She took a step back. She wanted to take a couple more but there was no solid ground to step on and if she insisted, she would find herself submerged inside the flowing water. So Rosemund stood still.

Her heart pounded like an out of control drum with an out of control drummer, she wondered what Jamie would do if she found herself in that kind of situation.

Rosemund straightened her posture and exhaled.

"Who are you?!"
