Chapter fifty five: Two worlds, one king

"But...he is a beast that has kept peace in Aradale for years and chooses his brain over his brawl. I will choose him over his father any day" May said at last.

"Give the king a break, my love. He has responsibility no young man his age should shoulder"

"Judd, I want an arrest warrant drawn for the current councilor of Trinity on the charges of fraud and assault as soon as possible. Congratulations Jared, you are the new councilor of Trinity and I can shoulder my responsibility just fine if I don't have crooks as councilors who increase my tax from seven silver pennies to thirteen to lined their pockets. And you madam, you are right. I should pay more attention to enemies inside the West not just outside"

Jared and May stared at Alexander like he had just committed blasphemy against the throne. Jared was sure now that the people he invited to his home were lunatics.

"You can't say you are the king when you are not. It's blasphemy and I won't stand it in my home, lad. My allegiance is to the King and as a citizen I am sworn to protect him"Jared was very serious.

"Loyalty is deeply appreciated new friend but I commit no blasphemy. I am the king Alexander of Aradale and over western hemisphere. And my word is law"

Alexander saw the disbelief and possibly anger on Jared's face. He reached into his bag and took out the symbol of the house of Aradale and dropped it on the table.

Jared and May recognized the symbol. There was just one of it in Aradale. The man in front of them was indeed the King.

Jared went on his knees and so did May.

"His Highness!"

"Spare my family, oh king! Take my life instead" Jared pleaded with him.

"No, Jared! Alexander is not going to hurt you or your family, right his Highness?"

Jamie looked at Alexander. She had no idea what he was or wasn't capable of doing. He had her lashed and shot for a lesser crime.

"Of course...not" Alexander muttered.

"Thank you his Highness! Thank you his Highness!" The couple bowed repeatedly to their King.

"Do you still want to be councilor over the West?" Alexander asked him.

"The West or just Trinity, his Highness?" Jared sounded confused. Was the King going to offer him a job?

"The West and Trinity.... your wife seems like a capable advisor and just like my Queen, she would help you in your position as Royal councilor over West as it just occurred to be that I require the head of the former Royal councilor for fraud and blasphemy" Alexander spoke like he was tired of having the same conversation.

"His Highness, I think Jared would like to discuss this with his wife" Jamie suggested as she clasped her hands over her husband's. She had no reason why she did that.

"Yes! He will do it!" May couldn't stop herself from saying. She clasped her mouth immediately when she realized she had spoken without being spoken to. "I apologize!"

"His Highness, I am honored. But only a general is allowed to be Royal councilor and keep the peace over the villages in the Western hemisphere. I am not a general nor am I of noble blood. But May is of a noble blood" Jared looked at his wife and smiled. If he couldn't change the world, maybe his wife could.

"But you are perfect for the job, Jared" She whispered and kissed his cheek.

"You are of noble blood?" Jamie asked May.

"I am Lady Lucinda May, daughter of Lord Noah of the house of Noah, her Majesty" May answered.

"Can a woman be General and Royal councilor over the western hemisphere?" Jamie asked.

"Yes and No" It was the Princess Rosemund voice "She can be the Royal councilor but she can't be a general. She would have to choose a man to shadow her and fight to defend the King if need be. Just like if I am ever Queen, Judd becomes my General and leads my army in battle"

"That is ridiculous!" Jamie couldn't stop herself from saying.

"The Queen is right. It's ridiculous. I have to find a way to make Jared a lord!" Alexander told everyone. He needed someone he could trust and he had seen Jared protect the crown without knowing who he was.

"According to the laws of Aradale, a lordship can be confer in a unique circumstances" Rosemund told him.

"Then I am going to confer" Alexander replied "Do you want the job?"

"Yes, his Highness!" Jared bowed to him.

Alexander stood up. It was time to return to his castle and be a king again.

"A messanger will reach out to you when it's time to make you a lord. You shall tell no one what happened here or in the market. I was never in Trinity dressed in a pauper's cloth" Alexander commanded.

Before they left, Jamie found Lily to say goodbye.

"Do you have to go?" Lilly asked her.

"Yes"

"What if the bad man comes back?"

"Lily, your father will keep you safe. Do you know my father's name is Jared, too"

"No"

"They are like the best papa in the whole world. We are both lucky" Jamie smiled at the Lily.

"Bye Lilly"

On the ride back home, Alexander was quiet. He had set out to teach Jamie about his kingdom but it turns out, Jamie had a point along. Most times, a peasant view was much clearer.

Rosemund knew her brother felt betrayed and was probably blaming himself. She made Beauty, her horse walk in the same pace as Blackie.

"You can't know everything, Alexander. You are human too"

"I am King. I should know"

"You are stuck in between two worlds. And you are King in both worlds. Somethings are destined to slip through the cracks. It's why you should surround yourself with people that would defend you till death" Rosemund looked at Jamie riding in the front of them and she continued.

"She doesn't want to be your Queen. Cut her loose before she brings about your downfall"

With that, Princess Rosemund urged Beauty to go faster and she rode off leaving Alexander behind with his demons.
