Chapter eight four: beauty in simple things

"Huh?" Alexander sounded confused.

"You can find your way back to the castle, can't you?" Jamie asked with a serious tone.

"Yes. Yes, I can but..." Alexander wanted to add more but Jamie was already walking up to the sloppy path. He stood up and went after her but then he saw Judd standing there with a stoic face.

"Sir Judd, may I ride with you back to the castle. I need my physician" Jamie sounded pleadingly.

"Yes, your majesty" Alexander heard Judd say to her.

Alexander stopped. He vaguely heard as the horse rode off with his lead knight and queen.

As soon as Jamie was in the castle, she went straight to the physician's court to have her palm bandaged.

"Your majesty, we are indeed lucky the wound is not infected"

The physician started admonishing her but Jamie paid no attention to what he was saying. Her mind was elsewhere.

After she had her palm bandaged, Jamie sat still on the chair till the physician left. She picked up a scroll and a writing pen and left a note for the physician. She was going back to her chamber with promise to come back regularly for her treatment.

Jamie figured she was Queen and the young scholar had no option than to obey.

Back in her chambers, Rachael was ready with a bright yellow dress for her and a bathe.

Jamie sat on the stool near the window and looked out of it. She seemed to be lost in thought.

"Milady?" Rachael called out to her. "Your majesty, your bathe is ready"

Rachael Wondered what had the queen so lost in thought? She moved closer to the young woman she had come to adore.

"Do you want to have the bathe at a later time, Milady?"

"Do you fancy any lad, Rachael?" Jamie asked her out of the blue.

"Milady?" Rachael was puzzled. It wasn't the kind of question a young maid expects of her queen.

"It's okay if you don't want to talk about it"

Jamie stood up and started disrobing when Rachael ran to assist her. After giving it a second or two, Rachael answered her question.

"There is a lad I like...he is not really a lad, more like a brave young man but we can't be, Milady" Rachael had a sad smile.

"Why not, Rachael?"

"He is a noble and I am a servant…. an upper class servant but still one. No one would approve" Rachael answered.

"And you want to be his wife?" Jamie asked her.

"I do. It's all I dream about, Milady"

Jamie was curious now.

"Did you always know you want to be someone's wife?" Jamie asked her.

"As a little girl, I dreamt of it. Every girl does, Milady. Every girl wants a prince that would love her till eternity. Every girl wants a soul mate" Rachael said in her dreamy voice.

"Not me...I never dreamt of such" Jamie couldn't stop herself from adding.

Jamie step into the tub of warm water.

"But Milady, you must have!" Rachael had a shocked expression.

"No but I dreamt of excelling in archery and blade throwing"

Rachael swallowed hard to stop herself from expressing the shock that went through little body. It was unlike something she heard from anybody more or less, a queen.

"Arabella had that dream, you know. She wanted normal things just like the girl next door, a husband, children and home but somehow, she didn't get them" Jamie paused for a lot while.

She wondered whether Arabella found her way home. Did her beautiful elder sibling succeed where she failed? Was Bella in Namura facing the fury of Papa?

Nobody had spoken a word about Arabella since Jamie was forced to make Aradale her home. It was like Bella was never there to begin with. It wasn't just sad, it was angering.

"Did you meet my sister, Rachael?" Jamie asked her maid.

"I didn't have the pleasure, Milady" Rachael answered.

"Who did? Who was her handmaid?" Jamie turned sharply to face Rachael almost splashing water at the poor girl.

"Monica was her handmaid" Rachael answered and waited a second or two before she wiped off the water from her face.

"I want to speak to her, Rachael!" Jamie almost yelled.

"I am... sorry but you can't, Milady. Monica is a fugitive. She disappeared the same time as the queen. All that was ever found was the note on the Queen's bed"

Jamie knew something about that story was wrong. She just didn't know what. She sat back down in the tub as Rachael scrubbed her back.

"You should find a way to make things work with your noble man, Rachael. Life's too short to be where you aren't supposed to be" Jamie muttered to her.

Jamie had the rest of her bathe in silence. She dried her body and started applying the body smoothing lotion.

"May I ask what is troubling my queen?" Rachael took out the bright yellow dress from wooden hanger and placed it on the bed.

"Do I look troubled, Rachael?" Jamie asked as Rachael started fastening her corset.

Rachael smiled. The queen had no idea how transparent her face was. Rachael remembered having that same look whenever she was angry about something relating to love.

"I always get that look whenever I am angry at my noble man" Rachael was sincere.

"Are you going to tell me the name of this noble man?" Jamie asked her.

Rachael's hand stopped moving as she tensed up.

"Okay Rachael....okay, tell me when you are ready" Jamie brought her out of her dilemma.

As Rachael helped her into her bright yellow dress, Jamie thought of Alexander. A man who didn't just abduct her but drove her sister insane. A man that threatened her home yet when she saw he was in trouble, she staked her reputation to protect him. If word got out, she would be ruined. No one would ever believe she was untouched. No man would want a princess that was already mated with another man.

It didn't bother Jamie as much as it should have. Marriage wasn't in her card. But she wanted to know why she felt the intensive urge to protect him at her detriment.

"I am conflicted, Rachael. I want something I don't want to want"

"I don't understand, Milady"

"I don't understand it too, Rachael" Jamie starred at the mirror in front of her. The dress fitted perfectly on her.

Rachael brought out the jewelry box and laid out expensive jewelries on the bed.

"Do you want to pair the bright yellow dress with the diamond necklace, your majesty?" Rachael asked her.

She was barely stopping herself from asking the queen to explain further about her impasse.

Jamie looked at all the exquisite jewelries on the bed and they all looked constricting and large, she was tempted to go without any ornament until her eyes fell on a small ruby necklace. It suited her perfectly.

"I want the Ruby necklace"

"Milady, you will be meeting with queens, princesses and noble ladies for tea, it's really an avenue for every one of them to show off their exquisite jewelries and dresses and talk in high pitch voices and look like porcelain dolls" Rachael realized a little too late that she may have insulted people above her station. She wanted to apologize to the queen except she saw a grin on her face. Rachael smiled instead.

"They do have unusual high pitch voices, don't they? The Ruby is perfect then, it will give them a little something to talk about"

Rachael was almost done with the jewelry when a knock interrupted her. She hastily fastened it and answered the door.

Jamie heard whispers and then the door was slam shut. Rachael hurried back to open the shoe rack.

"That was Cecilia with a message from the Queen's advisor"

Jamie waited patiently for the message but Rachael was rather occupied with shoes.

"Rachael, what message?" Jamie asked the girl.

"You are late, Milady. We need to get you to the tea parlor as soon as I find the suitable shoes to match your beautiful dress, your majesty. What about this?"

Rachael raised a pair of brown pointed shoes.

"It looks uncomfortable"

"This?" She pulled out another one.

"No, it looks painful to look at" Jamie complained.

"This?"

"No, it's too bright"

"This?" Rachael asked again.

"No. How about that one left of your little finger?" Jamie asked her.

"It's too mundane, your majesty" Rachael had a little frown.

"It looks comfortable. I want that one, Rachael"

Reluctantly, Rachael fastened the shoes on her legs. Jamie had her hair down with a gold crown that went around her forehead to the back of her hair.

"How do I look?" Jamie asked her handmaid.

Rachael was honored to be asked. She went around her to stand in front of Jamie like an inspection general as she looked intently at her.

"Exquisite....you look exquisite, Milady"
