Chapter eighty three: I don't know why I protected him

Jamie was almost naked now. It was the picture of indecency. One of the hands of the undergarment was off while the other loosely dropped to her arm.

She shielded him with the rest of her body. The footsteps were closer until the person became an image...wait, two images.

"Your Highness?" The first image started walking down the sloppy path to the river called out. Jamie recognized the voice. It belonged to Sir Judd.

She knew the knight wouldn't say anything to anyone about the king and queen making love at the most open place one can find. Jamie took a breath of relief but it was short lived.

The next footsteps belonged to one of Prince Dempsey's knights. Jamie froze and held on tightly to Alexander. She was still bleeding from her palm but that seemed to be the least of her problems.

Jamie knew word couldn't get back that Alexander experienced a moment of weakness. The rumors alone will crash the inter-hemispheric trade and people would see it as an invitation to invade the west. What to do?

What to do? Jamie refused to panic. She wanted to ask her husband if he was feeling better but anytime he tried to take his head off of her chest, he ended up putting it back. Even the shades of blue and green eyes were perfectly mixed together, giving off the most beautiful hazel eyes Jamie had ever seen.

It was bright and piercing.

Sir Judd walked a couple more steps when he saw the undressed queen and quickly turned to give them privacy. He stood still.

For one, he hated that the king left himself and the queen completely exposed to the attacks of the enemies especially now that they had a lot of them enemies in the West. The attempted murder of the queen was alert enough to keep everyone vigilant.

First, the king went to visit the sick queen and the next, the physician was telling him both his patient and her husband was gone. Judd had to almost physically pry the information on their possible whereabouts from Lady Lucinda May.

This was the definition of uncomfortable. Judd let out a breath from his mouth and tried not to look at them. He knew well the queen was quite capable of causing such scandal but he expected better from the greatest king that had ever lived.

"Your Majesty?" He called out in a small voice.

"Sir Judd, pardon my silliness. The water was so romantic that we couldn't help but...."

Judd cleared his throat loudly and violently to tell her that it was an inappropriate conversation to have with him. Jamie stopped taking.

"I should stop him from coming any closer"

Judd started walking, almost breaking into a run towards the knight coming down the sloppy path.

"Sir Zachary, I told you earlier that there was no need to tag along with me to the river" Judd's voice was firm and commanding.

"Crown prince Dempsey only wanted to be sure the king and his Queen were safe" sir Zachary had a smirk.

"The king and queen are safe. You may return to the castle, Sir Zachary. We wouldn't want any misfortune to befall you now, would we?" Judd's threat was subtle but it was true.

Zachary could see the discarded robe of the queen and he threw his own conclusion. Judd followed his eyesight to the discarded robe.

"It is in your best interest not to jump into conclusions or spread unfounded rumors, Sir Zachary. Hunting accident happen all the time" Judd said with a slight smile.

"Sir Judd, your subtle threats didn't go unnoticed" Zachary answered.

"What threats, Sir Zachary? I was just telling you the dangers of hunting, is all. Now, goodbye"

Sir Zachary turned and took his leave while Judd watched with an ironclad face.

Even though Jamie couldn't hear the voices anymore, she knew that even though Judd sent the other knight back to the castle, he was there lurking. Judd won't leave his king unattended.

Jamie saw that her hand was still bleeding and she needed to make it stop. There was only an amount of blood one can part with without repercussion.

"Can you move, Alexander?" Jamie asked him and Alexander nodded "Just keep your eyes closed, darling"

Jamie helped him up before proceeding to make him sit on the blanket.

She turned to leave but he grabbed her arm gently to stop her.

"I will be right back. I just need to stop my hand from bleeding. I will be right back before you can count to 10, darling" She kissed his cheek before she walked towards the river.

She took off the bandage first and allowed the river water to run over the injured palm. Jamie's eye darted from one place to another looking for a healing leaf and she found one halfway through the waterfall. She had to climb the rock to get to it.

Okay, Jamie... it's now or never. She repeated in her mind. She took a step towards the waterfall but she realized she was still half naked.

"I should put on some clothes, first!"

She slipped the undergarment into its proper position and wore the loose gown. She started climbing.

Jamie was so close to the healing leaves when her hand slipped and she came crashing down and she was headed for the smaller rocks at the base of the river.

She was going to die after all or worst be rendered invalid.

She closed her eyes as she anticipated the impact. She even welcomed it. It was inevitable.

Only one name flashed in her mind before it was over for her.

"Alex" it was a bare whisper.

It wasn't going to be too long now, she would be....wait! She wasn't falling anymore. Something or someone caught her mid fall. Jamie thought she was hallucinating, so she kept her eyes closed. She was probably dead and this was after life.

Calm down Jamie, calm down. It is just after life, that's all. Just calm....

Jamie inner voice was interrupted by a chuckle.

"I counted till ten and you didn't come. I had to come find my wife"

"Alexander?" Jamie opened her eyes to stare at her husband. But how?

How did Alexander go from there to here in seconds? He would have to be inhumanly fast to achieve that feat. Jamie took a breath of relief.

"Were you trying to escape again, Janessa?" Alexander asked her. His voice wasn't harsh and it contained no malice.

"No. I needed the healing leaves on the waterfall rock for my bleeding palm. I don't know how you caught me but thank you"

Jamie wrapped her arm around his neck and hugged him. Her body was still shaking from shock and even the pain in her palm was gone just like that.

(Semeen, can you hear me?)

Alexander searched for his second in charge in his mind but he couldn't feel her presence.

(Semeen, if you can hear me...I need your help. Luna is injured)

Alexander started to walk back to the blanket with his eyes still closed and Jamie in his arms.

"Be my eyes, would you sweetheart?" Alexander asked of her.

"Yes, Milord"

Soon they were sitting on the blanket. Jamie was still in shock. Almost dying twice in two days was overwhelming. She was still angry at Alexander but she was relieved she was still breathing.

"Alexander, you have to try and open your eyes again" she urged him.

She knew they had to get out of there somehow now that she couldn't get to the healing leaf.

"It's too bright" he complained and kept his eyes closed.

"We have to try, okay? Just open them slightly and keep them like that until your eyes get reacquainted to the brightness again. Come on, try it" Jamie urged him.

"Okay. I will try"

"Don't open them fully just yet, Milord. Just a little bit, Alexander....open them a little bit"

At first, everything was too bright and the more he looked around the more dazed he was. At one point he was tempted to shut them and he almost did till he heard her little voice.

"Come on, your highness...focus on my face alone. Push every other thing out of your mind"

Alexander tried to hold the blurred image of her face for a while. He kept staring at her with his dimmed eyes, pushing every other thing from his mind. Then it started working. Her face came into focus and he could see her clearly now. He could control the brightness now.

He traced her face with his fingers. He wanted to be sure he wasn't hallucinating or something.

"Can you see me, Milord?" Jamie asked him.

Alexander smiled widely like he was gifted something special. Of course he could see her.

"Yes. Yes, I can see you. I can see again" he grinned from ear to ear.

"Good.. Then you can find your way home, yourself. I am not riding with you"
