Chapter eighty six: wars and rescues

Alexander wondered if Jamie knew that the garden was off limits to anyone outside his immediate family.

"Your highness" Queen Eileen made herself comfortable without permission on the vacant chair that was near the princess limiting Jamie's options.

Jamie knew if she didn't seat beside Alexander, she would have to stand for a while.

"What are you doing here, your majesty?" Alexander made no intention of asking her to sit.

"It's my garden too, isn't it? Are you forgetting I am queen?" Jamie asked him.

"No. But you should be resting. You are injured, remember?" Alexander asked her.

"I am fine. I didn't see you at tea, sister. Is everything alright?" Jamie asked her judgmental sister in law.

Rosemund wore a light blue dress that had way too much buttons to be Jamie's style. She was growing into a young woman almost losing her teen years chubbiness. She was quite beautiful and a year younger than herself.

"The king taxed me with the preparation of the council set to determine the punishment for those nincompoops that attacked you, sister. Personally, I am rooting for execution!" Rosemund answered her.

Jamie pressed her lips together and twisted it to the side, was Rosemund sincere or was she mocking her attack? Her countenance was grim like she meant every word.

"As do I, crown princess Rosemund...an attack on the queen should be made an example out of" Eileen agreed with Rosemund.

"I am quite touched but isn't execution too much?" Jamie asked them.

"No!" They all said in unison.

"If not for the stupid accord I sign, their heads would be hanging by the entrance of the village by now" Alexander unconsciously touched the hilt of his sword as he talked.

Jamie finally sat down beside Alexander. She was speechless.

Alexander stood up and excused himself. He had a rescue, to plan with his closest knights and Semeen. Rosemund followed right after him with a flimsy excuse about seeing a tailor. Jamie almost rolled her eyes, how many damn dresses does the spoilt girl need.

She heard the sound again behind the flowers and she convinced that a knight was there.

"Whoever you are, come out at once!" Jamie yelled.

Sir Judd emerged instantly with his signature stoic face.

"Your majesties" Judd watched the queen of Koi briefly. He thought it would be awkward but she simply nodded to him and looked away like he was a stranger. It bothered him a little.

"Sir Judd, what are you doing following us?" Jamie queried with a glint of anger in her big green eyes.

"I have to make sure you are safe with your attackers still roaming about" Judd answered in a manner that hinted on the obviousness of his reply.

"Sir Craig is still bedridden and the rest of the knights are under lock and chain. I am perfectly safe. Did Alexander put you up to this nonsense?" Jamie demanded as she tapped her finger on the table.

"No, the king doesn't know...I followed you to rest my chaotic mind" Judd answered.

"That is quite noble of your, Luther but unless you want to defend Jamie against butterflies and sunlight, may I suggest you make yourself scarce?" Eileen voice made Judd's heart flutter just a little bit.

Judd turned and left without waiting for Jamie to say any other thing. He just had to be there without letting his presence know until the king needs him.

Half an hour later and a servant informed him that the king required his presence.

"This is another rescue mission and the last one didn't go so smoothly. I want you to know you are not under any obligation to follow me to the South. Out there dressed in a peasant clothing, I am not king. I am an outlaw with no power to protect you"

Alexander looked at Judd, Walters and Derek, all of his strongest knights and they were mute and nonchalant at his heartfelt speech.

After a second or two of waiting for any of them to speak up, Alexander added "If you have anything to say, now would be the right moment"

"Can I pick our fake names?" Sir Walters asked.

"No, you are terrible at name picking. You named your daughter flowers, poor little thing… saddled with you as a father" Sir Derek replied with a laugh.

"Flowers is better compared to his little lad he named Beetles" Judd joined in to make jest of the knight.

"What is wrong with Flowers and beetles?" Walters asked no one in particular.

It slowly dawned on Alexander that his knights were not going to leave him unattended in a foreign kingdom. He smiled and shook his head as he started saddling his own horse. Ginger was to stay behind this time since he wasn't in the forest with them.

Semeen moved closer to him to have a brief conversation.

"They are loyal...your knights, I mean. I think they are prepared to die for you if need be"

"As do I, Alpha Luna...as do I" Alexander murmured.

"You do know I am your beta now not alpha Luna? I relinquish the title, remember?" Semeen reminded him with a smile.

"You are Alpha Luna, Semeen. Every pack we rescue will answer to me but they will have certain autonomy. They will remain a pack"

Semeen was lost in thought, it wasn't every day she agree to the fact that she was wrong about something. She tilted her head to the left as she thought about how to bring it up without sounding like a total loser.

"What is it, Semeen? You have that look in your eyes and you are rubbing your neck"

Semeen had no idea she was rubbing her neck until Alexander pointed it out. She stopped and looked at him.

"I may have been wrong about Luna Janessa. Maybe, having a human Luna is not such a bad idea, after all."

"Thank you but I don't think Janessa is just human. I think she is something else but I don't know what yet. I think she has the power to merge my wolf and I. I think she can do more than that"

Alexander had Semeen's attention now. She moved closer and spoke in bare whisper. "What are you going to do, Milord?"

"Nothing"

"Nothing? What do you mean by nothing?" Semeen stopped herself in time from yelling.

"I mean, Janessa doesn't know she is different. I think it is better I let things be" Alexander wondered why he was prepared to let things be. He wasn't the type to sit still and allow things to play out. He always believed in making one's destiny but when it comes to Janessa, all bets are off. Alexander was slowly realizing that she was becoming his weakness. He would do anything for her including choosing her over himself.

Semeen opened her mouth to say something but she closed it. It wasn't her place to make the Alpha do anything but whether King Alexander or Alpha Max wanted to do something about a possible cure or not, she wasn't going to wait for answers to fall into her laps. She had to find out what the human Luna was.

"Semeen, Just let it be....for now at least. We will have this conversation later after the winter hunt. Meanwhile, keep an eye on Janessa and report any changes to me"

"Yes, Milord"

Alexander listened to the laughter of his knights as they mount their horses and followed him behind. He rode in the same pace as Semeen while the three knights followed behind.

"Do you think they have an inclination what we are, Semeen?" Alexander asked his second in command.

"If they do, they are not showing it. I have a feeling that they won't be so understanding if they did" Semeen said with a smile.

"I have this feeling that not so long from now, beast and man will coexist peacefully"

Semeen longed to believe him but if her experience in the south was any indication then it was highly unlikely. Man was better off not knowing about wolves' existence. Humans tend to fear what they don't understand.

"Yes. It's a noble dream"

"But you don't believe it?"

"I have a dead mother to prove otherwise...but yesterday, the wolf king was a myth and today, I am riding side by side with him"

"What are you saying, Semeen?"

"I am saying impossible things happen. We have a human Luna willing to fight for her pack, humans riding side by side with the king of wolves to rescue more wolves and just maybe, soon man and beast can coexist"

With that Semeen pushed her horse to move faster.

King Alexander and his knights with the help of his Alpha Luna rescued three dozen wolves from the southern border and successfully brought them back to the western hemisphere under the noses of foreign royalties.

Alexander knew taking them to the capital would draw questions he had no patience to answer.. It was why he was surprised when his new Royal councilor, Jared, Lucinda's husband met them half way through the forest and offered his home in Trinity to the rescues.
