...

Another week passed by, and by now, Juin had already started going back to school normally. His wounds had mostly healed, and as for the line fracture on his ribs, those seemed to have almost healed as well.

"I wonder if having part of my soul freed from the shackles help in the healing process…" Juin mumbled as he waited for Max at the bleachers.

"Probably," Lucifer replied nonchalantly as he watched the rugby players practice on the field. "What game is that? That looks fun."

"Rugby… It's pretty violent…" Juin said, not bothering to look up to know what Lucifer was talking about. Instead, he kept staring at his new pair of Nike, which Mrs. Martin bought for him yesterday as a going away present since his was already too small to walk in comfortably.

President Presley acted fast, and within three days since he last talked to Juin, everything about his adoption had been settled. The only thing Juin had to do now was to wait for the day when he would be officially "adopted" into President Presley's family.

"Who are you talking to, you weirdo?" a cheerful voice suddenly asked.

Having accurately deduced the owner of the voice, Juin turned around with a smile and looked up at Max. However, his smile dropped slightly when he saw her boyfriend standing behind her with a charming yet threatening smile.

"Hey, Max…" Juin said, standing up out of politeness. "Hey, Thomas…"

"Mmm…" was all that Thomas said to him. He looked at Juin up and down before turning to look at Max. "I'll see you tomorrow…" he said before planting a kiss on her lips, all the way keeping an eye on Juin.

Lately, Juin's appearance had changed drastically, and he did not feel comfortable leaving his girlfriend alone with this guy. Before this, he was fine with it since he had never looked at Juin as a man before, but now that Juin's delayed growth spurt had finally kicked in, Thomas felt a little threatened… Not so much in the looks department but by the fact that these two were childhood friends.

"K… Take care," Max replied with a smile as she kissed him back. She then watched as Thomas ran down toward the end of the field, where a bunch of teenagers were waiting for him. Looking at Juin's confused expression, Max chuckled and explained, "They are going for a competition today at the next town… It's the semi-final."

"Oh," Juin mumbled as he sat down. He could care less about what Thomas was doing. Taking out the packed lunch that Mrs. Martin made for him today, he said, "So, how's life? I haven't really got a chance to talk to you ever since I came back to school…"

"Sorry about that…" Max chuckled as she took out her own packed lunch that her mother made for her today. "The swim meet took all my time away, and after today, I won't have much time anymore. The schedule that Coach created for me is not meant for humans…

The last few days, she had been spending most of her free time in either the gym or the swimming pool, resulting in Juin being unable to talk to her at all.

"Just take good care of yourself…" Juin said as he took a bite from his BLT sandwich.

They talked a little, with the conversation mostly about what had been happening in class during Juin's absence.

"Oh yeah, weren't you quite close to Mika?" Max asked before taking a bite of her egg salad sandwich.

Hearing her name, Juin frowned slightly and the last bite of the BLT sandwich hovered in front of his mouth for a few seconds. "Not really…" he replied after a short moment of silence. "Why?"

He looked at Max while stuffing the last bite into his face.

"Oh, I just thought that you are quite close to her since I have seen you talking to her a couple of times."

"We are just acquaintance… Why are you asking this?" Juin asked with a blank expression, seemingly disinterested in the question that he posed himself. He had been ignoring every one of Mika's attempt to talk to him ever since he got back.

"She seems to be a little down… Actually, it started around the same time as your accident… I think her brother got into an accident as well," Max said. She thought for a while before saying, "That's quite a coincidence, for you two to get into an accident at the same time."

"There's a lot of bad people in town…" Juin mumbled, looking away from her.

Max chuckled. "Someone said that you two got into a fight because Taka Nakamura caught you with his sister. Of course, I know that's a lie"

"Why?" Juin asked as he suddenly turned to look at her. "You don't think that I can injured him."

When Juin suddenly looked at her with such an intense gaze, Max's face turned slightly crimson, and she gulped nervously, only to choke on her bread.

"Cough! Cough!"

Juin immediately reached over to pat her back while handing her his water bottle. After Max took a few gulps and calmed down, she looked at him with an annoyed expression. "What was that for?!"

"What?" Juin asked innocently.

She punched his shoulder lightly as she mumbled, "Looking at me like that…"

"Like what?"

She thought, "Like you are about to eat me whole…"

Shaking her head to get rid of the thought, she quickly said, "Anyway, it's not about whether you can injured him or not... It's just not you, to fight with someone."

"I'll fight if I have to," Juin said with a straight gaze. He then turned and looked at the rugby team players. "If they try to hurt me or someone I care about, I'll fight them even at the cost of my life."

Max frowned slightly as she looked at Juin. "Juin… I don't like this."

"What?" Juin frowned, looking at her with a disapproving glance. "Why?"

"You seem to have changed…" Max said with a soft voice. "You'd have never said stuff like this previously."

He hesitated for a while before saying, "You don't like that I'm stronger…"

"No!" Max shook her head. After thinking for a while, she said in a soft voice, "I'm just… If Thomas bothers you, would you fight him?"

That was one of her biggest fears, that the two boys she cared about would one day fight against each other.

Juin thought for a while before nodding. "I will."

There was a short moment of silence before Max muttered, "But I don't want you guys to fight."

"Then tell him to leave me alone," Juin said. Unlike before, he was no longer willing to back down. With his eyes narrowed, he then asked in a cold tone, "Or do you want to see him pummel me instead?"

"No!" Max retorted and grabbed his hand. "I don't want to see that! I don't want to see you guys fight against each other, ever! I care for both of you!"

Upon hearing her answer, Juin looked at her for a long time, and just as Max got uncomfortable with his stare and was about to look away, he said in a dry tone, "You don't have to worry about that. I'm leaving soon."

"What…" Max released his hand and sat up straight. "What do you mean?"

"I'm getting adopted, and everything has been settled. I'll be leaving here next week, or the week after," Juin said with a sad smile before turning away from her. "So, you don't have to worry about the possibility of Thomas and I getting into a fight…"

"What…" Max's voice trembled as she looked at him in disbelief. "You… You… When? Are you leaving here?"

"It doesn't matter… and yes, I'll be leaving here," Juin said, still not making eye contact with her.

"Oh…" Max looked down at her hands, not knowing what to say. After a long while, she clenched her fists and looked up at Juin with a poignant smile and eyes that threatened to cry. "I'm happy for you…"

Juin looked at her, and his hands moved up. He hated it when she cried; he had always hated it even when they were kids. Wiping the tears that lingered at the corners of her eyes, he whispered, "I'm sorry…"

"It's not your fault," Max said, pushing his hands away gently before wiping her tears with the bottom of her palms. "I'm happy for you, really. I'm glad that someone is finally adopting you. You deserve to be happy… It's just that…"

She took a couple of deep breaths, and after calming down, she smiled and said, "It's just too sudden… I never thought that we would be apart someday… I thought we would be best friends forever--"

Without any warning, Juin gave her a peck on the lips, lingering there for two seconds before parting away. "I don't want to be best friends forever with you…" he whispered.

Max, who had never known this side of Juin, was completely stunned, and her red lips parted slightly in shock. Even Lucifer, who had been spending days and nights with Juin, was completely taken aback by his bold action. His mouth was so wide open that if he had a physical body at the moment, someone could have stuffed an entire fist in his mouth.
