Daphne soared in the sky. Mana poured out of her in a defensive shroud. With her most recent level she had earned the skill she wanted most, Spirit Skills. With it she was able to finally access a skill of her spirits. Depending on which one she had active it could be flight, extension, or a few other powers she had figured out from her forms.

Arnold waved her down. She began to descend, allowing the mana to understand her wishes. They had been all over the map by that point. Most of the giant vultures had been wiped out. All the remaining humans had been found. They had started with over a thousand, but were now only 342.

As game became scarce the colossi became more numerous. Now that they had done some skirmishes with the giants they all felt confident on taking one down.

“What’s the plan, stud?” She asked Arnold as she landed. Charlotte was next to him looking into the distance.

“We attack soon,” Arnold said. She cast Identification on him.

Human

Level 32

“When did you level again?” She asked.

“Found some more of those big chipmunks,” he admitted.

“They’re squirrels,” she said once more.

“Whatever. They’re good XP and meat.” He put on a smile for her. Not much for the PDA that was all she really got from him out in the open. When they were alone it was a different story.

“Where’s your dad?” Charlotte asked.

“Setting up with the others,” she said. Arnold turned to look so she slapped his toned ass. “He’s more excited about this than you are.” They had gathered 40 of the strongest for this one attack on a colossus. Having learned it’s routine it would be stomping through any second.

The boom of the footfalls sounded as it drew closer. Nervous, she read through her status screen to distract herself.

Yes the dream of hers of getting a flying spirit did come true. The only problem was they only had 15 feet tall vultures around. The ugly bastards caused her charm to drop, but gave her some great skills and agility. Since she didn’t look like a vulture in her Shroud, Daphne didn’t mind taking the form.

“There,” Arnold said as the colossus pushed its way through the trees. It appeared to be heading straight for them. Charlotte extended her hands and they were soon hidden from the beast’s mind.

It was an ugly thing. One of the smaller ones at 40 feet tall. The legs were large stone cylinders that were rounded at the bottom. They made craters in the mossy earth with each step. About 25 feet up was the actual body of the monster. Almost a large brick, the body had no real discernible features as it moved forward.

It continued on past them missing by about 20 feet. As soon as it did Arnold ran after it. Charlotte followed, while Daphne pushed mana toward the ground. She lifted off as her Shroud of the white vulture aura covered her body. Staying close behind she waited until the colossus passed the marker. Then pouring mana into her skill she flew at it like a bullet.

Her Shroud acted as protection as she slammed into the back of the giant just as the others attacked. A Geomancer grabbed its leg with dirt and stone, someone blew off a Ki blast, another person used ice to freeze it. Bolts of all different elements bombarded the colossus.

It let out a loud groan but Daphne could tell it wasn’t enough. Pushing more mana out she backed up then slammed right into it again. Slowly it began to tip forward. She was afraid a leg was going to catch it, but Charlotte did her magic and the giant’s limbs locked up.

People scrambled out of the way as Daphne rode its back all the way to the ground. That’s when the real fight began. Focusing their attacks on the side a few jumped on its back with Daphne as she changed to the Kishki Lion. The shroud covering her began to claw at its stoney exterior. Specks of stone were chiseled off with each of her strikes.

It took them 2 hours, but they eventually got the notification that it had died. 82 days it had taken them to finally kill one. Daphne didn’t know how many times they had ducked and hid from the large feet. She watched more than one person squashed by them. It was good to finally get some payback.

“You did good,” Arnold said as he came out of his invisibility.

“Oh yeah? How good?” She asked, giving him the look.

He understood. Despite him wearing a mask she knew he wore a slight smile. “You know how good,” he eventually said in that robotic voice. She laughed.

“10 days to go,” she said. “What’s next?”

“The next colossus,” he said.

“Grrr, I knew you’d say that. I want some freaky shit tonight. You better be prepared,” she warned.

“Whatever you want,” he said, then turned invisible again. She rolled her eyes but knew he’d be back. He always came back.

Zora’s hands shook as she stepped away from the Boss Constrictor. She had almost perished again, but killing the boss level monster had leveled her up and healed all of her wounds. She moved her stats and studied her screen.

She didn’t know where she had gotten the 3% experience. The notifications for them had started a few weeks ago. Large amounts of experience a day at first, then they trickled down and have completely stopped over the last couple of days. Zora hoped they came from Asher. A sign he was out there still fighting and helping her. But now the experience actually saved her life.

Even in the Honor Trial she hadn’t been so low on health. The Trial had taken them a few days to clear. After some tests and monster fights she and the ladies eventually passed. Much to the surprise of their companions. Unfortunately for them the Trial disappeared after it was cleared, but it gave her enough to get a leg up on everyone else.

Zora was now the main tank and highest level of the humans. The next highest was Galina at 24, and the other team's tank, Brutus at 23.

“Holy shit I thought you were dead,” Nash said running up to her.

“So did I,” Zora said as she sheathed her sword. She wore all white armor, a gift from the Trial of Honor. Galina wore her own black armor, Tijana her green, and Jabari her blood red. The 4 girls had all received a Knight System, it had taken time but they all proved themselves in their trial. The other 3 girls came up to her. They spoke no words, simply nodded to one another.

“What is that?” Nash asked as he moved to the gaping hole in the snake's side. He dug around the green bloody mess until pulling out a fist sized blue glowing gem. Zora cast Identification on it.

Mana Heart

“It says Mana Heart,” she said, taking it from him. “How did you see it?”

“I don’t know,” the young boy said. “Thought I saw something glowing.” She looked at it for a little while. It was small and hard to the touch. Jagged edges on the exterior were black, but the center glowed blue.

“Great news everybody,” Lenette said as she walked up to them. She held a large piece of paper in her hand. Made of brown parchment, at the top it read ‘Guild Charter’. “Got this after you killed the boss.”

The others in the group looked to Zora as she thought. Lifting up the face plate on her helm she smiled. “I have the perfect name.”

“You alive bitch?” Joon asked.

The latina girl next to her groaned. They had both collapsed after leaving the last Trial. Sleeping on an alien planet was usually a bad idea, but with her new skill Joon wasn’t too worried about it. “Get your ass up. Start circulating mana, you’ll be fine.” Camilla groaned but sat up. So long in the Trial she could use some coffee. Joon really missed Asher at that point, but she could get her caffeine the old fashioned way.

Dropping firewood from her ring she used a torch lighter to get it going. They were on hard sandy ground. All around them was nothing but flat cracked and dried out mud. The black portal still whirled behind them. Dumping water into her pan Joon set it near the growing flames.

“How long do we have left?” Camila asked.

“You ask me that everyday,” Joon said, slapping her friend’s ass. Despite not wanting to do so, Joon brought up the screen anyway.

176 were left of the 1,021 people she had started with. It was a hard number to hear, but then again it was 10 times the survivors that made it last time. When Atalanta had been the instructor she left them all to figure it out on their own. A mere 15 made it out of the human side, all earning the Hell title, and all hating Atalanta. One of many instances of her knowing best how to piss people off.

Once they reached the 10th floor her once big group of 300 had split up. The planet they were now on was filled with Trials. Of course the Trials were miles apart, and none were easy, but she had already completed 4. Joon and Camila only had 1 more to go to fill her title quota.

“10 days,” Joon eventually answered as the water began to boil. She dumped the instant coffee into 2 cups. Handing 1 to Camila the latina thanked her. Despite Joon’s misgivings she decided to let the Tempusmancer stick around. Almost a kindred spirit, Camila was able to manipulate time. Not so much about going back in time, but speeding it up or slowing it down. Maybe she would get to that in the future. Joon studied her status screen as she sipped her coffee.

“Human!” Someone yelled from a little ways away. Joon looked over to see 2 demons staring at her. One had gray skin and the other pale white.

“Hello demonkin!” She yelled. “One moment and I will drop my traps.” Joon walked up to her trap in the ground. Pulling mana from it, the trap disappeared. She did the same for the others surrounding them. They were all connected. Forcing whoever stepped onto them to jump between the 4 traps in an ever increasing speed. Eventually they would pass out from the constant jarring of being teleported.

“Shit, you weren’t joking,” Camila said standing up. This was her first time seeing another species. Her team had made it with very little incident, and Joon had immediately run as far as she could to get the Trials she wanted.

“Seen any other humans?” Joon asked.

The 2 demons stopped a few feet away. “A few, they left us alone, so we did the same to them,” the gray demon said.

“Good,” Joon said. “What is your tribe?”

The demons were surprised by the question.  “Julaski,” the pale one admitted.

“Fine then,” Joon said. As far as she remembered there were 3 tribes: Klashsic, Kushala, and Julaski. They all ruled their planet and fought one another like crazy. Mostly they were the same, but the Klashsic were typically stronger. “What can I help you with?”

“We were wondering if you had information on any of the trials,” the gray one asked. “Our instructor mentioned that there was someone with your looks that had the Omni skills.”

“Yes, I met your Instructor,” Joon admitted. She had snuck away a few nights and lucked upon them. After that they had a formal agreement. The clones were a lot more hesitant, but since only 50 of them had survived they didn’t want to anger her group. “This Trial is more Mancer related. There is another physical one a few dozen miles away. I can sell you information on both or 1 of them.” With a wicked smile she looked to the demons. The demons and clones were flush with Syscos since so many of theirs died, she didn’t mind liberating them of some of it.
