WRS Arc 2 – Chapter 12

At this time, the real-time bullet-screen1 was going crazy.

“Heavens, my family’s Little Ge can rely on his face to earn his keep. Why does he still rely on talent?”

“I’m really convinced now; this programme team’s method of playing is too deep. Why is it that my FuYu are the last ones left? Does this mean that they have to kill each other while loving each other?”

(“套路”, which can also be translated as “routine” or “pattern”, originally referring to a sequence of moves or techniques in Wushu.)

(See Chapter 10 for my notes on their CP name.)

“The design of this stage is really 66662. They actually gave the participating members an additional big BOSS role. And it has to be said that Ji Luoge’s performance is really too innocent. If Su You had not found evidence, it is likely that no one would have doubted him.”

“As a single dog, I just wonder, between the two of them, who will kill whom in the end, haha!”

But on the other side of the screen, the situation continued to play out.

“Yes, I found out.” Su You calmly turned around and his phoenix eyes looked straight at Shen Jiayan. “The reason why the four of us would appear in this villa was your conspiracy from the beginning. Because of this will, you want to kill us all one by one, right?”

Shen Jiayan lowered his eyes, and his long and thick eyelashes casted a small shadow on his face, “Correct.”

“The others are now dead, and the only one left is me.” Su You broke into a smile, “So now as long as you kill me, your desire can be achieved.”

Shen Jiayan didn’t speak, but his expression was somewhat complicated.

Two people confronted each other silently, and there was an invisible aura spreading from the two of them. The air seemed to be congealed with glue, the wind sweeping through the tower heralded a rising storm in the mountains.

(“山雨欲来风满楼”, Chinese idiom, a metaphor for the signs and atmosphere that foreshadow a major event.)

Just as everyone subconsciously held their breath as they stared at the screen, Su You suddenly moved.

Under Shen Jiayan’s stunned gaze, Su You walked towards him step by step, smiling as he opened his arms to him, “Come on, give me a hug.”

Shen Jiayan was shocked for a moment, then he went forward two steps without any hesitation, right into Su You’s embrace.

The bullet-screen was lined with words of “dog abuse” and “blinded by the show” flashing by. Unexpectedly, Su You stealthily took out the blade stained with red paint from his pocket—this was something he had picked up earlier from the floor of the bedroom.

According to the setup of the programme, once you have been smeared with red paint, you will be judged as dead.

What the hell, this godly development! Everyone was baffled, the Film Emperor really proved his good acting skills! It was just hugging someone while killing them, why did it look so heartbreaking?

Shen Jiayan was still unaware of this. He habitually snuggled into Su You’s arms, saying in a somewhat nasal voice: “A’You, go ahead and escape! I don’t want to kill you anymore.”

Obviously, it was for Su You that Ji Luoge was willing to give up the chance to win.

Although you might not want to kill him, he wants to kill you!

Everyone kept on looking forward to Ji Luoge lifting his head and seeing Su You’s raised blade, but Ji Luoge continued to nestle in Su You’s embrace with utmost trust from the beginning to the end.

While everyone’s hearts were anxious, Su You ruffled Shen Jiayan’s soft hair, grabbed the hand that Shen Jiayan had around his waist, and conveniently slipped the blade into his hand. Then, without any reluctance, he used the blade in Shen Jiayan’s hand to scratch his neck, leaving a shallow red mark. He said with a doting smile, “But I don’t want to escape, I want to let you win.”

A variety show could also be played with so many ups and downs, twists and turns. There was an uproar in the bullet-screen.

“Mama asked me how I could watch a variety show and watch till I cry.”

“This method of playing is very deep, who took who seriously. On dog abuse, I only accept the FuYu pair.”

“Yes, this is really FuYu.”

No matter how bloody the bullet-screen was, the live show of that day was about to end here.

The host hung a mini-villa necklace made of pure gold around Shen Jiayan’s neck, “Congratulations to our Ji Luoge for winning our first episode. The prize is this necklace, so let us invite Ji Luoge to give an award acceptance speech!”

“If it’s an award acceptance speech, then it would be… It was quite fun to play; I hope that the programme group can invite us to come again next time!” Shen Jiayan’s almond eyes glimmered and he smiled somewhat shyly, raising the necklace, “Thank you for the gift from the programme group, it looks very good.”

In the bullet-screen, without any prior agreement, everyone began to ridicule at the same time.

“Ji Little Ge, you have your man to protect you, of course you’d think it’s fun. Do you dare to turn around and look at the faces of the people you killed? I think Mo Ming’s face clearly says: I bought a watch last year3.”

“Did no one notice that he said “we”? I was silently stuffed another mouthful of dog food.”

“The one in front, just eat the dog food by yourself. Why must you feed me a bite?”

“I’m not addicted, but what can I do if I want to see Su You and Ji Luoge again? In fact, I’m not a rotten girl4, but I actually think their interactions are very loving and sweet.”

2335, making an advertisement. On May 1st, their new movie will be out!”

It could be said that everyone began rejoicing.

Please read this translation at foxaholic.blog, thanks!

Just by participating in a variety show, the number of fans on Shen Jiayan’s Weibo increased from more than 2 million to more than 10 million. Thus, the outstanding popularity of this variety show was even more obvious.

When a person becomes famous, the voices that support them and question them would also increase.

But regardless of whether it was to support or make complaints about it, in summary, on the day when “How was the Brocade Letter Sent” was released, the cinemas were completely full.

Su You and Shen Jiayan also secretly put on make-up, wrapped themselves up tightly, and sneaked into the cinema.

At the beginning of the movie, it was a drizzling light rain dripping, dripping from the roof eaves. The rain was continuous. An old man was lying in a rocking chair with his eyes closed: “I’ve been too mediocre in this life of mine. The only thing that was not ordinary, was that I had loved someone before.”

The scene gradually turned bright, and time turned back to the time when He Jinshu and Gu Ji were going to school together.

He Jinshu asked Gu Ji to go to school together. Every time they passed through the familiar undulating slopes, the moment when he could reach out and hug Gu Ji’s waist, He Jinshu’s whole face of happiness was very moving.

When He Jinshu and Gu Ji were doing their homework together, Gu Ji asked He Jinshu to help him with his Chinese homework. He Jinshu’s expression of being unwilling yet reluctant to refuse also made people feel the same.

It was for Gu Ji that He Jinshu studied very hard, but due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, they reported to cities that were far away from each other. When He Jinshu burst out crying outside the door, there were already people in the cinema beginning to sob.

No matter how busy, no matter how tired He Jinshu was, he would rush to Gu Ji’s city once a week.

It was a pity that in the end, Gu Ji still walked into the wedding hall holding someone else’s hand. When the camera zoomed in, just to see the expression in He Jinshu’s eyes as he stood not far away gazing at Gu Ji, there were many people who could no longer resist shedding silent tears.

It was still raining.

The old man closed his eyes slowly and serenely: “Gu Ji ah, I didn’t know until later that when some people love another, it would be for a lifetime. But even if time were to repeat, I still do not regret loving you. Because, loving you, was the only thing I did well in this life of mine.”

In the darkness, Su You leaned towards Shen Jiayan and took his hand. His phoenix eyes were very bright, as if containing unimaginable magical power: “Luoge, let’s go abroad to get married, okay?”

“Why so sudden?” Shen Jiayan’s almond eyes widened, and he failed to react for a moment.

“It isn’t sudden.” Su You put a ring on Shen Jiayan’s finger. “This is something I‘ve wanted to do for a long time. Luoge, did you know? To love you is also the best thing I have ever done in my life. So, promise me, okay? “

Shen Jiayan looked into Su You’s eyes and said, “Okay.” Thus, he sold himself muddleheadedly just like this.

The cinema was filled with sobbing and crying sounds, but no one knew that not far from them, the two protagonists they were crying for had already completed the great event of a marriage proposal.

Returning home, there was a lot of online discussion about the film.

Most of them were compliments, but there were also some haters of Ji Luoge and Su You who were putting up a last-ditch effort. They said that the plot of this film was too plain, and the story was too stereotypical, just simply selling rotten clouds.

(“垂死挣扎”, literally “near-death struggle”)

But before the fans could counter-argue, a national film critic wrote a special review for the film. And the words, inside and out, were full of appreciation.

“I have always been aware of Old Zheng’s capabilities. But it has to be said that the film “How was the Brocade Letter Sent” still gave me a very big surprise.

First is the actor who played He Jinshu. Frankly, I haven’t seen any of his works before, but his acting made the character of He Jinshu come alive. Some people say that when you like a person, affection will overflow from the corner of your eyes to the tip of your brows. Every time He Jinshu looked at Gu Ji, the expression in his eyes made my heart palpitate.

If he didn’t truly like him, then the actor who acted as He Jinshu is really a youth to be respected.

(“后生可畏”, literally “younger generation to be respected/feared”, an idiom meaning that the young are full of potential and will surpass the old.)

Next is the arrangement of the film. Gu Ji this name was chosen well! Gu Ji, i.e. misgivings, can be seen from many details in the film. Gu Ji knew that He Jinshu liked him, and he liked He Jinshu as well. When He Jinshu stole Gu Ji’s love letter, that perspective is obviously the perspective from the back of the classroom, and looking from above, that is also Gu Ji’s perspective.

(“顾忌”, also pronounced as ‘gu ji’, so the name could be a pun/homonym.)

But he had too many misgivings, too much to think about. And He Jinshu was an ideal man. Therefore, they were doomed to be a tragedy of brocade letters that are difficult to send.

(Reminder: “锦书” or “brocade letters” = the ‘jinshu’ in He Jinshu’s name, and “寄” or “send” = the ‘ji’ in Gu Ji’s name; see Chapter 6 for more details)

And finally, what is love? I think it’s the hand that wants to touch, but holds back. He Jinshu chose to give up, alleviating Gu Ji’s misgivings, and he lived alone for the rest of his life. At first glance it seems to be a tragedy, but within the tragedy, it also contains perfection.

In short, I can give this film nine points.”

At this point, it was the fans’ turn to raise their eyebrows and retort, “Haters, just wanted to ask you if your face hurts from all the slapping?”

The result of the film was good. Director Zheng was naturally also so happy that his eyes narrowed into slits: “Su You ah, bring Luoge over this week, let’s have a celebration party?”

“No time.” Su You’s answer was simple and crude.

“Isn’t there no schedule recently? What are you busy with? “ Director Zheng was momentarily baffled.

Su You hooked up the corner of his mouth, smiling unkindly: “Busy going abroad to get married!”

Director Zheng: “……” Why is it always me getting shows of affection shown in my face? This is full of malice.

Internet Slang Footnotes:

1. “弹幕”, as some of you might already know, this is an online feature found in China, usually on video-streaming sites, which allows real-time comments from viewers to fly across the screen like bullets.

2. A common internet slang, used as a compliment, because in Chinese, six or 六, pronounced ‘liu’ sounds like the word 溜, which means “to be good at something”.

3. So, the pinyin initials for “我去年买了个表” is WQNMLGB, which is also the pinyin initials for another phrase meaning something along the lines of “fuck your mother”. The reason why “buying a watch” is used in particular is tldr: due to an event in 2012 involving some rich guy and his many changing watches.

4. In other words, a fujoshi, a fan of BL/yaoi/shōnen-ai. Rotten is often used in these chinese novels to describe BL-related stuff.

5. Equivalent of LOL or a laughing emoji, because on a certain Chinese internet forum, the 233rd emoji is a laughing face.
