Chapter 69 The Zoo

It had been over three months since Wu Shixiong had been imprisoned, and there was still over a month to go before his own trial.

At precisely half past eleven in the morning on the 28th day of the twelfth lunar month, the criminal detention center of the Dragon City Police Station began serving lunch. In cell 106, over thirty suspects were already seated on their bunks, in formation, waiting for their meals to be distributed by the guards.

The criminal detention center differed greatly from a formal prison, as it was specifically for holding suspects awaiting trial. The management system was relatively strict, with rules against family visits and outdoor activities. Essentially, once a suspect was brought here, they would remain in the cell until the official trial results were announced, with the exception of being taken out for questioning by the judicial department.

Over thirty people were crammed into a room of only forty to fifty square meters, waiting for months with the constant worry of their trial results. It was no wonder that the mental state of those held here was somewhat twisted. This was especially true for those who had committed serious crimes, with countless negative emotions festering within them, making them appear peculiar and hostile.

As lunch was served, Wu Shixiong held a bowl and crouched early by the cell door, ready to collect the meals for the inmates. Being intellectually challenged and having poor communication skills, combined with a reserved personality, made his experience during these three months more painful than that of other ordinary suspects who might have to wait for three years. This place was a small society filled with sin and crime, and anyone picked out would have committed a crime outside. They were not good people, so it was easy to imagine the kind of treatment Wu Shixiong had to endure.

Bullying! Almost everyone in the detention center bullied this young man with congenital defects, forcing him to do dirty and tiring jobs, and making fun of him in their free time.

In front of the prison cell, Wu Shixiong squatted down and dutifully finished distributing the meals of over thirty inmates before finally picking up his own plastic food tray and taking a small portion of food to eat in the far corner of the room.

While eating, the familiar inmates whispered to each other, but no one paid attention to Wu Shixiong. He sat alone in the corner, strictly adhering to the prison regulations, eating quietly without making any noise.

Wu Shixiong had a huge appetite and one serving of the meal was not enough for him. He ate slowly, almost as if he were reluctant to gobble it down. He broke the hard steamed buns into small pieces and put them in the soup, drinking it carefully.

After lunch, the inmates followed the rules and lay down on their bunks, preparing for their afternoon nap.

Wu Shixiong sat in the corner, arms wrapped around his legs, yawning incessantly.

A fellow inmate walked up to him and said, "You're on duty this afternoon, huh!"

Wu Shixiong looked up at him and replied, "Big...brother, I'm too tired...I've been on night duty for several days in a row."

"Bang!"

The inmate kicked Wu Shixiong in the head and cursed at him, "Why do you talk so much?"

Wu Shixiong's head was spinning from the blow. He bit his lip and looked at the inmate, nodding silently without arguing back.

In a detention center for criminal cases, during sleep time, two to three inmates must be on duty because the police cannot watch over the inmates constantly. The inmates must supervise each other to prevent incidents such as suicides or explosive behavior, or to avoid any other disturbances.

Wu Shixiong had been on duty for many consecutive days, working the third shift from late night until early morning and also during the noon break. Therefore, the only time he could sleep was during the first half of the night.

Physically, Wu Shixiong can endure the strain, as he has been conditioned to it since childhood. However, the emotional toll has pushed him to the brink of mental collapse.

The mishandled case, the selective abandonment of his parents, his own uncertainty about the future, and the various ordeals he has faced in prison - Wu Shixiong can only bear them alone, without anyone to talk to.

At noon, Wu Shixiong is on duty with another person, each sitting quietly in opposite corners of the room.

With the back of his head resting against the cold wall, Wu Shixiong naturally recalls memories of Third sister, his banter with Sixth dog, and the small iron box where he secretly kept his savings. These are the few things in the world that can make him nostalgic and happy, and he carefully recalls them over and over again.

Perhaps it is fatigue, or perhaps it is the natural human tendency to self-adjust after prolonged emotional stress and exhaustion, but Wu Shixiong falls asleep with his head against the wall and soon begins to snore.

After midnight, the sound of footsteps echoes through the cell block. A prisoner walks up to Wu Shixiong, looks down at him, and slowly raises his arm.

Across the room, the other prisoner on duty watches with a smirk as the sound of a loud slap jolts Wu Shixiong out of his sleep. He was caught off guard and now he is both disoriented and afraid.

"Who allowed you to sleep?" The inmate bent over, pointing and cursing at Wu Shixiong, "What if a police officer comes by to check and sees you sleeping? Are you trying to get me into trouble?"

Wu Shixiong stared at him in shock and anger, "I... I've been on duty for a long time, I... I'm too tired, I can't control it."

"Stubborn mouth? F*** you, do you think you're still at home? You can do whatever you want? This is a detention center, people here are like animals, and you still want to negotiate with me?" The inmate habitually raised his foot and kicked towards Wu Shixiong's head.

"Bang!"

In shock and anger, Wu Shixiong suddenly stood up and just lifted his arm, knocking the inmate down.

What kind of noise would an adult's weight make when it fell on the hollow floorboards?

"Thump!"

A dull sound reverberated throughout the quiet prison corridor.

All the other inmates in the room woke up, and the big brother, the highest-ranking inmate, asked groggily, "What's going on?"

"He fell asleep on duty and hit me."

"You stupid idiot, don't you want to behave properly?" The big brother in the prison shouted, "Beat him up for me!"

"Swoosh!"

More than a dozen inmates rushed over and began to attack Wu Shixiong.

Leaning against the corner of the wall, Wu Shixiong relied solely on his weight and strength to knock down three people in an instant. His fighting style was like that of a grizzly bear - if you punched him, he might not feel a thing, but if he hit you, it was like being hit with a sledgehammer.

Despite his bravery, Wu Shixiong was overwhelmed by the attacking prisoners. Ironically, many of the people who joined in the beating were also victims of bullying, and low in status within the prison. Yet at that moment, they were all red-eyed and full of rage, taking part in the assault on Wu Shixiong, for reasons unknown.

The brawl in the prison quickly alarmed the guards, and soon the alarm bell rang throughout the cell block.

Meanwhile, in the city center, Xu Hu suddenly called Tang Baiqing: "I have some information. Come over right away."

At the same time, Su Tianyu was at home, happily preparing gifts for visiting friends and relatives during the Spring Festival. "Uncle, do you want to give something to the Bai family too?" he asked.

"Sure, give Bai Dabiao a pair of bright red underpants. If I remember correctly, this year is his zodiac year," Su Zhengcai replied politely.
