Chapter Twenty

Training Begins

I quickly ran downstairs, losing my balance at the bottom step and nearly twisting my ankle. I threw myself into the kitchen, breathing heavily as I came into contact with Enoxon. I guess I scared him because he spilled grease on his arm when he turned around and winced at it. He quickly sat the pan down and looked over me, trying to figure out what happened.

My breathing went so quickly that I could barely get any words out. "Kurai……… Gone," Is what I managed to say while trying to catch my breath.

"Kurai's gone? What? I wonder if he went to try and find you," He murmured, putting the stuff he was cooking off to the side and turning the oven stove off. Quickly, he scrambled past me, "Surely he's not gone."

I rushed after Enoxon, explaining the blood droplets I found on the ground in his room. Explaining the blood droplets, the man quickly went up the stairs, careful not to trip. I chased after him.

Sure enough, the room was still empty, and Enoxon looked around the room. "It's like a dark energy came in and kind of whisked things away," he commented as he looked at the plants around Kurai's room. "He'd never let his plants die." Making his way to the blood, he was curious and quick to look at the door that led to the porch. "There's a portal there," He said, "Or at least was. Their trace is extremely faint. I may be able to locate where Kurai went…" Within seconds, Shadowfall, Memory of Illuminated Dreams, appeared in Enoxon's hand.

I watched him close his eyes and push his hands toward the portal. He was focused on the doorway, and a slight black glow emitted from his body.

"The good news is, I know where portal took him. The bad news is… This isn't his portal," He explained to me, light green eyes narrowed on the porch.

"Well, where did he go?" I asked him, curiously wanting to know where this fox demon went.

His face shadowed over as he placed his hand on the door frame and stared into the abyss of what he could see.

"This portal leads somewhere dark and cold - a lot colder than the Underworld right now."

"Like, the mountains?"

"He went to Tartarus. I… Don't know why he would go there."

"Was he dragged there? Yushin once pushed Kurai and me through a portal. But what would anyone want with Kurai?" I questioned, and my mind instantly went into a dark zone. The first thing that came to mind was that demon that marked me. Fear crept into my body as I could only think that if the demon slayed his entire family and tribe, he would finally find Kurai and would do that to him. I was scared for him. He may be a powerful Nogitsune, but this demon single-handily took out an entire tribe. I instantly turned to the portal, wanting to run into it. As I readied myself into the portal, I could feel something heavy pulling my feet to sit still.

Without a doubt, this was Enoxon's doing.

"You can't just run into Tartarus, Snow. Do you even know what Tartarus is?" His voice was raised slightly as he asked me that question.

I shuddered at his voice, never hearing his voice get so full of rageful before. "Enoxon, I don't care what Tartarus is. I need to help Kurai! If it's that demon, it's my fault he may be hurt!" I exclaimed, my anger filling me, replacing the fear.

Enoxon slammed the door shut with his magical staff and glared at me, green eyes full of pain. "I don't think you understand, Snow. If you run there, you will be dead within five minutes. This was an obvious trap to get you to follow through and just… Well, die. Poof. Gone!" He explained slowly to me. "This isn't something we can do alone."

"Aren't you, like, the strongest sorcerer here in the Underworld?!" I raged at him. "That's what you tell me!" I was hurt that he wouldn't let me go, my feet glued to the ground. I hadn't seen Kurai in so long and wanted to see him. "I have to go, Enoxon." My anger grew, causing little tears as I stared at the sorcerer before me.

It was like a switch went off in him because his face became soft again as he watched my reaction. "Snow," He murmured gently, his voice dropping as he spoke to me. "I just got you back; I don't need to lose you again. We will go after Kurai together. But we can't just run in there. You will get killed," He told me, emphasizing the 'killed.'

And then, with me, my body instantly relaxed as I listened to his voice. His voice was soothing, like that of a river. I realized Enoxon wasn't scared for Kurai - he was afraid for me. And it pierced me through the heart. My knees buckled below me, and I felt defeated as I fell to the floor of the nogitsune's room. Nothing would stop the fear and anger I felt for the world - for the demon that took Kurai.

Enoxon fell with me, keeping his hand on my shoulder as he spoke, "You don't seem to understand how strong Kurai is. Remember, he has five tails for a reason - in fact, he gained a sixth tail while you were with Yushin."

That barely reassured me. It didn't matter how strong someone was against a demon that killed a tribe of kitsunes who probably had all nine tails. What reassured me was the hope from Enoxon that fluttered into me.

"You just woke up from a slumber with the Spirit Walker and the Celestial World and found out that you are a Reaper - the missing daughter of the previous Reaper. You don't know the power that comes with being a Reaper. You have immense power, some of the greatest power the underworld has ever seen. We just need to unlock it," He explained to me. "We may have to rush training, but for now… I think we need to see Astaroth. Are you ready?"

"And Lord Mundus?" I questioned him.

"... Not yet. Lord Mundus will put you to work rather than worry about Kurai, unfortunately," Enoxon murmured sadly, ducking his head to look up at me as I stared at the floor. A small smile played on his thin face as he asked me again, "So, Snow Rumaki, Daughter of the Lady in Red, are you ready?"

I brushed the tears and nodded, "Anything to rescue Kurai."

He may have had a smile, but his eyes darkened with sadness. "Okay," He whispered, putting his head against mine, and his magic of bright green light began to twirl around us.

A few moments later, we were teleported to Miserth Keep outside the large doors that entered the corridors. Enoxon opened the doors and waltzed right in, bringing me with him. The hall - still had that black and red decor like before, but it was rather dark inside. There weren't many lights, just candles lighting the rooms and filling the air with a peaceful aura. The sorcerer was holding my hand as he began to bring me through the halls to the throne room - which was empty as well - except for the lonely Astaroth, who was tidying up the space. When our presence entered the room, the duke stood up straight and turned immediately toward us.

His face seemed to look relaxed when his purple gaze met with mine. A sigh of relief escaped him as he approached Enoxon and me. "I'm so glad you are back in the Underworld, Lady Snow."

I tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, listening to his gentle voice and smiling. "It's wonderful to see you too, Astaroth. But we are here on important news."

"Kurai's gone to Tartarus," Enoxon spoke up immediately, letting go of my hand and holding his staff closely to him.

"Tartarus?" Astaroth repeated.

The sorcerer nodded, his eyebrows furrowed and his forehead wrinkled. "Where is Lord Mundus? Is he here?" He questioned him.

"No, The Crimson Prince is out on business to the brothers of the Underworld," He replied, "But why has Kurai gone to Tartarus?"

"We think the demon that attacked Snow may have gotten him, as it seems word of the Reaper returning has gotten out."

"Why… Would the demon that wants Snow be connected to the word of the reaper?" Astaroth turned to look at me, gazing over me.

"Have you not heard?" Enoxon questioned.

"We announced the return of the reaper earlier today, yes. But I had no idea Snow had returned."

"What?" I questioned him. "Do you mean someone else is claiming to be the Reaper?" I blurted out and immediately bit my tongue. "Err, I mean."

Astaroth's face softened, and he looked me over, "Snow, I've known you were the Reaper - do not fear."

"What?!" Enoxon and I both exclaimed.

"What do you mean you've known Snow to be the Reaper?" Enoxon queried him.

"I have my connections," He gleefully said, smiling gently. "It seems Yushin and I understood, so please do not be mad."

"Does that mean Lord Mundus knows?!" I gasped; I wasn't ready for the entire underworld to know.

"No, he does not know. Just because I know doesn't mean he knows everything I do. I may be the duke, but I once sided with the Lady in Red - for an extremely long time," Astaroth explained.

"Okay, so apparently, I'm just dumb," Enoxon muttered under his breath, crossing his arms and giving Astaroth a sideways glance.

"Why do you think I kept trying to ask Snow about Yuna?"

I shook my head, putting my hands up to ensure we didn't start arguing about the Reaper thing. I wanted to find Kurai. I tried to question Astaroth about my past. Still, I needed to focus on finding Kurai first - he was my priority. It was my turn to keep my guardian safe. "Let's focus, please. We can ask questions about the entire who-knew-I-was-the-reaper thing later."

"Ah, but to answer your question, Snow," Astaroth replied, "SomeoneSomeone else has claimed to be the reaper on account of guiding a soul. However, I do not believe they are - as I have the reaper before me. So, let's forget about that person and let fate decide." The demon said, smiling gently and tilting his head to the side. "As for Tartarus, it's a perilous place - I'd suggest planning it out before blindly going in," He gazed at me as he said that last part.

"Yeah… Enoxon stopped me once and closed the portal, so I have no idea how to get there on foot," I murmured, avoiding his gaze.

"Perfect, then this will be a simple trip. It's one big trap to lure the true reaper in. I'm sure this demon knows practically everything about you already, Snow. He's probably been watching you for numerous years," The demon sadly spoke and lowered his head slightly. "However, you have Enoxon so things will be fine!"

"Astaroth, can you come with me?"

The duke frowned as he gazed at me after I asked that question. "I'm afraid I can't; someone needs to stay here to ensure the castle does not fall and The Crimson Prince's demons don't fall into chaos. I'm sorry, Lady Snow. May I suggest Jenieva, though? She's a relatively strong demon who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty, as one would describe it."

It hurt me that Astaroth couldn't join us. I trusted him when I met him, and I don't know why. It's got to be his charm, though. He's beyond charming and friendly - for a demon.

"What I can do, though, while Enoxon readies for the trip and gathers supplies, as well as Jenieva, is try and help you through Lady Snow," Astaroth's voice reasoned with me.

"Help her?" Enoxon questioned, taking a step in front of me just slightly. "The last time I trusted someone to help her, they took her away for three weeks," He murmured to the duke.

"Ah, you hurt me, Enoxon!" He chuckled, smiling still. "I am different from Yushin. I am the Lord's Duke - and I knew the Lady in Red personally. So please, allow me to help Snow."

I gently reached for Enoxon's wrist, tugging on it like a helpless child. I smiled up at him, "I trust Astaroth."

"You said that about Yushin, too," He said disappointingly. "And look what happened."

"I found out that I was the Reaper, and I was not injured," I told him with a big smile, hoping he allowed me to side my Astaroth. "I'm the Reaper; I will be a lot more powerful and useful now!"

"You know nothing of your powers, Snow. What if something happens to you?" Enoxon asked, his voice quivering with worry. He turned to me, looking down at me with those leafy-green eyes. "Most Reapers conjure black magic."

"Black Magic?" I echoed, "I know that's something that witches use - but I'm sure I can handle it."

"It's hazardous. It can consume a person whole if they are not strong enough to control it."

"Well, if something happens and I get consumed, you'll have to save me, right? Like a knight in shining armor," I flashed him a bright smile and gripped his wrist tighter. "Come on, if Astaroth says he worked with the Lady in R- err, my birth mother, then I would like him to help - while you gather the materials we will need on this journey." I tried everything I could with him, almost like I was flirting through something to get what I wanted. Granted, I probably didn't need his permission, but I also wanted him not to worry.

"... Fine. But I'm going to put something on you to let me know you're okay," He replied hesitantly.

"Wouldn't that be considered stalking?" I teased him.

"No. It's to keep you safe from any possible black magic issues."

Astaroth stood patiently the entire time I had to convince Enoxon to let me go with him. "Come along, Lady Snow. You cannot travel to Tartarus without magic; you will be eaten. Enoxon, be at ease," He reassured the sorcerer and turned to dismiss him. "She is in good hands."

Enoxon nodded and turned away from us, glancing over his shoulder one last time. He held out his staff one previous time towards me and began to murmur some words under his breath. His body, glowing a gentle blue color, flowed from the staff to me. The spell covered my whole body and gave me a strange energy. I felt weightless and free as if the air was holding me up. This must've been the spell that would 'watch me.'

Landing gently, I glanced down at my body and skimmed over it. I didn't feel any different now or see a little eyeball that would follow me. Perhaps he could just feel my pain if I engaged in some? "Okay, now that I'm all powerful and stuff, thank you, Enoxon," I cheerfully called to him.

He nodded, flashing me a sad smile before tapping the ground twice with his wooden staff and disappearing into that same blue light that covered me.

I turned towards Astaroth, still standing casually with his hands behind his back.

"Now, My Lady, I do not have too much time, but I wish to help you the best I can," Astaroth urged and began to walk away. "I understand The Lady in Red has her magical caverns, but the type of magic you must learn will have to be somewhere a lot safer than the Cove," He explained as he left the throne room.

I hurried after him, feeling rather excited. I was scared for Kurai, but if this was a trap to get me, I knew he'd persist. He was a strong fox demon, and as long as I could feel our bond, there was a slight chance he would be okay. I still wish I could dive right into that portal, but being unable to teleport would be an inferior deal.

Astaroth led me through the corridor, the party room, and the garden. This was the same garden where I had found Yushin's slight blue shimmer, and I felt a bit of ease rush through me. I know I was here with the support I needed. How hard can magic be to learn? The garden was huge, almost like a maze, it seemed.

"Magic has a price, Lady Snow," He told me. "Everyone's magic takes a toll on their body. Demons have it a bit different; we have more to put into our magic than a human - regardless of whether you are the reaper or not," He explained to me, holding out his hand. Within a second, a small blue orb appeared in his hand. "Every magic is different as well. I am a demon of Ethereal Magic, able to conjure items at my own will. I can create tomes, books, weapons, chairs, etc."

I listened to him, watching the blue orb shift into numerous objects as he listed them.

"I can simply teleport here and there," he said, fading from spot A and appearing behind me a few feet. "I have mastered the magic that I was created with, and wishing to learn more," He told me.

"Most Reapers are born with some form of Black Magic - it could be many things, but it will always be linked to the origins of Black magic. This specific type of magic is compelling, as Enoxon has stated. You will either be consumed by it or overpower it. I will ensure your safety since your mother was the Lady in Red. I have a special book that I'd like you to look into. This book was created by your mother, which she entrusted to me for your return to the underworld." He held out his hand, and gently, a blue book fell from the middle of the air and into his hands. Astaroth dusted it off and approached me. "This is a Grimoire, a compelling book against demons. Your mother called it, 'Oblivion, Grimoire of Demons.'" He held the book out to me. The cover of the old grimoire was a striking combination of black and blue. The deep, inky black leather was overlaid with intricate designs in a shimmering blue thread. The patterns seemed to shift and move as the light caught them, giving the impression of otherworldly energy pulsing through the pages within. Despite its age, the cover was remarkably well-preserved, with no signs of wear or tear. It was clear that this was a book that had been cherished and carefully protected for many years.

I gently took the book from him, and my body felt extremely weird as soon as I took it. I could hear whispers surrounding me, which caused me to look around to see if I could see anyone. There was no one there except Astaroth and I. I opened the book, which caused all the surrounding noises to disappear from me, staring at the pages that lay below me. There were so many pictures and writing notes from my mother. I ran my fingers over one of her notes on the side.

This page read,

“Immolorpus Demoulsis (Demonic Form).

Effect: Transform Caster into Demonic Form.

Appearance: A white outline on the body transform into a demonic form.

Level: Expert

There was a drawing of a human woman and another with a demonic look demon-form. I tilted my head and smiled, knowing that there was a spell to transform me into some other form. That would be fun to try out.

"Ah, not that one. Your own demon will consume you," Astaroth commented, returning the page to the beginning. "One day, though."

"I didn't know I could have a demon form! That's so neat!" I exclaimed.

"It is, but dangerous at the same time. Let's try some simple conjuring spells."

At the beginning of the book were some spells, even listed as a 'beginner's level.' I didn't want to know base magic; I wanted to learn hard magic! I tried to be solid and all-powerful! While Astaroth wasn't looking, I quickly scanned the page to remember where it was, marking it by barely folding the edge of the page and moving swiftly back to the beginning of the book, where he had motioned me to go.

"Perfect, let's start with the Void Transfer," Astaroth said and motioned me to read over the page. "It is a simple spell that moves an item from one spot to another. Similar to teleportation, but only useable on inanimate objects." The demon removed the blue pendant from around his neck, gently placing it on the ground before me. Straightening back up, his hands locked behind his back again, and he watched me. "I wish you to move this pendant to the water fountain behind you," He explained.

I scanned the page, taking the enchantment into my mind as I read over the small description and looked at the picture. Putting the book down on the ground, I stared at it for a few more seconds. I chanted the incantation with increasing urgency, my hands shaking as they attempted to channel the energy of the darkness. But despite my efforts, nothing seemed to happen. The air remained still, with no strange movements or anything. It was clear that the spell had failed, and I sighed. I didn't feel anything, not even the slightest bit of magic. I could only hear the whispers growing louder, unable to listen to what they were saying. I often heard random names not in English, but I could not understand them. This would take a while.

The pendant did not move, not even an inch.

"Try again. No need to rush, Lady Snow," Astaroth's soothing voice weaved through the whispers into my ear.

Taking a deep breath, I stood up and closed my eyes to focus as best I could. I tried to picture the blue pendant and its shapes, edges, pattern, and intriguing colors. Once I could imagine the charm in my head, I imagined the water fountain behind me. I listened to the water trickling out from the top, trying to picture the fountain's layout and memorizing the water's pattern. Successfully grabbing the two images, I whispered the content on the page.

"Obius Elemeris," I whispered.

As the magic coursed through my veins, I felt a tingling sensation radiating from their core. My limbs felt weightless and energized as if I were filled with an electric current. It was a feeling of power and possibility, a sense that anything was possible if I only reached out and grasped it. After a few seconds, I could almost see the shimmering blue energy of the grimoire cover, the pendant, and the fountain images in my mind, swirling and dancing around me. It was a feeling like no other, a connection to something ancient and mysterious that filled me with wonder and awe. My eyes shot open, and that pulse of energy disappeared and shot in the direction of the pendant, relatively strong. A bit stronger than I expected - causing the dirt around the charm to be kicked up. The second that pulse of energy hit that pendant, the gem disappeared.

I took a deep breath as the magic fluttered away from my body. Turning around, I scanned the water fountain and saw the pendant lying at the top, water trickling over it.

"Wonderful!" Astaroth quipped, nodding to me. "Now, take that pendant and see if you can return it here."

I did as he told me, repeating the enchantment and picturing the same images again. I didn't need to lift my hand; I just thought of the three pictures I needed to take. After repeating my enchantment, the pendant appeared back on the ground. Unfortunately, It seemed a little scratched up. Immediately, I picked up the pendant and frowned, "I'm sorry, Astaroth. I didn't mean to put markings on the pendant." Showing him the charm, he shrugged it off. "

"Your mother did the same thing," He chuckled softly, taking the pendant from my hands and showing me the back. "It's okay, and I expected it from you."

"Really?" I questioned him, and he nodded in response, showing me a dark mark on the back of the pendant.

"Yes. She had to go through the same training you did. Granted, she was much younger when she discovered she was the underworld's next reaper, but that is okay. Let's practice a few more spells, shall we?" He asked me, placing the pendant back around his neck and smiling gently in my direction.

I nodded in agreement. We continued to practice a few more simple spells. I slowly forgot why I was learning this Black Magic from the old Grimoire of Spells.

After several hours of training, I was beginning to feel fatigued. Astaroth noticed that I was starting to look exhausted and brought me home, insisting he could make a meal for me. I denied him numerous times, offering to cook for him as a thank-you for the training, but he smiled and took over the kitchen before I could even set foot in there.

"I'm exhausted," I murmured, flopping to the couch and leaning backward. Astaroth had just finished making a meal for me and was catering the dinner to me. "Is this how everyone feels after just teleporting?" I asked him.

Astaroth chuckled, setting the food before me, and shook his head. "As someone who is just beginning to discover their magic, no. It took a lot out of you for just a few spells. You've never had access to your magic before, have you?" He questioned me as he sat in one of the single armchairs in the living room.

"Never. I had never had something magically happen to me while I was doing something, angry, hurt, or saddened. My life was pretty normal," I said, sitting up. My mouth began to water at the robust and savory smell of the meal before me.

"That's incredible that this magic has been locked inside you for so long. Granted, you were only able to cast a few simple spells… But that's okay. You'll get the magic one way or another," His soothing voice spoke. "No one was consumed either, which is lovely. Your mother would be very proud of you, knowing that you were ready to stand in her shoes."

My mother. As far as I'm still aware, Sayuri was still my mother - as she was the one who raised me. I didn't resent the previous reaper for placing me in her care, but I was still saddened. If only I could meet her, that would be amazing. I could ask her many questions, ask her for help and advice on becoming a Reaper and what it meant. Surely it wasn't just collecting souls, though, right? I was just a magical being that was raised in the human world. My heart sank a little, knowing I had no idea who my birth mother was.

"Astaroth… What was she like?" I questioned him quietly, my voice dropping very lowly.

"She was a wonderful and caring person but wasn't afraid to take a stand," Astaroth began, lifting his teacup to his lips and taking a sip. A smile glowed on his face as he stared into the cup of tea, "She was fearless and always willing to help someone, guiding them and ensuring they were going to the correct area… But she was more than just a Reaper," He whispered. "She was so much more than that."

I tilted my head as he said that, his voice slightly stringing towards the end. They sounded saddened as he continued to tell his story.

"She was a wonderful friend, some time's a troublemaker, but she always had the best interest of those around her. A rebel, but a strong one, if you would. The Lady in Red cared for her demons and Spirit Walkers, ensuring each had what they needed. When she announced her pregnancy to me, I was excited for her. I couldn't help but worry…" He trailed off and let out a gentle sigh, "Demons cannot conceive, but your mother was a halfling, just like you," He explained.

My eyes widened in shock as the news sunk in. I had always felt like I belonged in the world of humans, but initially, it was weird when I found out who my parents were. The reality of my true identity hit me like a ton of bricks. Knowing that I was a reaper, sure that wasn't an issue - as I looked like a human. Eno and Kurai kept saying I wasn't human, so I thought simply a reaper had its race. I was wrong. The weight of the realization was heavy on my shoulders, but I knew I had to face it head-on. I took a deep breath and questioned Astaroth, "What is a halfling?"

He nodded. "It was possible with the Father of a Demon and the Mother of a Human Race. However, this meant that the mother would be harmed in the process. She chose to carry you throughout the entire terms - which I respected as her friend and duke. I supported her in every way I could."

I frowned when he told me that, realizing I was never a human. Just a part of the human world and masked under my skin and bones was whatever demon-side I had in me. Were there many halflings? My blood flowed with that of a demon's and a human's, and I was the reaper. I was the one who got to collect lost souls and take them home.

"Did… I kill her?" I questioned Astaroth, my voice just barely above a squeak.

The demon's head shook, his teal-blue hair gently swaying as he did so, "Luckily, with the power of magic and the strength that she had, she was not killed in birthing you," He explained to me. "Sayuri was the one to help her through it, too. Bringing you into this world, the two of them worked together to ensure your safety."

"Then… How did she –" I couldn't even finish the sentence. Knowing what happened to Ren and Sayuri, I can only imagine that the same fate crossed my birth mother beforehand.

Astaroth noticed my sudden mood change and asked, "Are you sure you're ready for this information, Snow? You just found out that you were the reaper." His voice streamed gently. "There will be plenty of time to discuss your family in the future."

"... Just one more question, I guess. What about my father? Who was he?"

Nodding slowly, Astaroth hesitated to reply, "I cannot share that information with you. My deepest condolences, but it was part of my agreement within our pact shared with your mother."

"You had a pact with my mother?"

"Yes, as you have a pact with Kurai."

"You know about that? Of course, you do; you seem to know everything."

He chuckled, "I know a lot about you, yes. I hope to be able to watch you grow more powerful, as I did with your mother as well." A smile played on his lips as he stood up to gather the plates after I had finished eating.

"Will you share the information with me one day, Astaroth?"

The demon glanced over his shoulder as he began to walk away, "I promise, Lady Aria."

There was that name again - Aria. Mati called me by the same name when I was with him within the Celestial World.

Thank you, Astaroth.

The All Powerful Sorcerer's, Ren and Sayuri Rumaki.
