Late-Night Restaurant (6)

***

The first meeting day of the Late-Night Restaurant.

Hae-jun rode the subway and headed to Samcheong-dong.

The restaurant they agreed to meet at was a hanok that used to be a house, remodeled to create quite the atmosphere. [T/N: Hanok is an architectural term describing Korean traditional houses, also referred as Chosun houses]

As he opened the front door and went inside, the familiar faces of the production crew greeted Hae-jun.

“Hello.”

“Welcome, Hae-jun-ssi.”

“Are you here?”

“Audio director. Please put a mic on Chef Cha Hae-jun first.”

About 10 cameras behind PD Jang Il-su naturally filmed Hae-jun’s appearance.

Hae-jun, who was wearing a microphone, awkwardly sat down, and soon, Yoon Yeo-jin and Lee Seo-jun arrived in order. Hae-jun got up from his seat and greeted them politely.

“Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you.”

Yeo-jin, who turned 71 this year, looked much younger than her age.

‘Celebrities are different after all.’

“Long time no see. We saw each other last time, right?”

After greeting Yeo-jin, Seo-jun, who had become acquainted as a restaurant guest the other day, was the first to reach out and greet him.

His unique, languid impression and deeply dimpled canine teeth that showed whenever he smiled were impressive. Since he had only exchanged light eye contact from afar during their first meeting, today was the first time he had seen him up close.

“Hello. Have you been well?”

“I’ve been well. It’s just that the past few days have been a bit…”

“Did something bad happen?”

“I’ll tell you the details later. What about you, Chef?”

“I’m always the same. I’ve been in the kitchen from morning to night.”

He also farmed at Cha-won’s farm, went fishing, and sometimes camped by the sea with Mong-chi, but those were secrets he couldn’t tell anyone.

If he were to tell the story of his new experiences, it would be enough to talk for 3 nights and 4 days, but it's a bit disappointing that he can't.

“Oh my. Do you two know each other?”

Yeo-jin naturally joined the conversation.

“A little bit. I happened to go to the restaurant to eat.”

“That’s also fate. It seems our chef is famous.”

“It’s incredibly delicious.”

“Really? What do you sell?”

“I run a Western-style restaurant. I sell things like pork cutlet.”

“Pork cutlet? Oh my, that sounds delicious. When we were young, we used to go there often.”

“Please stop by sometime later. I’ll fry it deliciously for you.”

“Will you do that? We’ll see each other often while filming. Please do it then.”

“That’s fine. Haha.”

“Hoho.”

The atmosphere was good for a first meeting.

Jang Il-su, who was watching the cast members from behind the camera, smiled faintly.

‘If we get a little closer, the chemistry will be good.’

Creak-

At that moment, the front door opened and Kim Hye-ri appeared last.

She was embarrassed by the appearance of her seniors sitting down first and greeted them in a hurry.

“I'm sorry I'm late. I stopped by the shop and came.”

10 years since debut.

In the music show dressing room, she is a distant senior who receives greetings from her juniors, but she is the one who is the least experienced here.

“No. We just got here, too.”

“Yeah, kid. We came early. It's just in time.”

“I'm the youngest, I should come first. I'll come early next time!”

“The youngest? You aren’t the youngest”

“Who else is there besides me?”

“The chef here.”

Lee Seo-joon introduced Hae-joon.

“Oh~. Hello, I'm Pinky Day's Hye-ri. You know? Chart reverse run.”

“Nice to meet you. I'm Cha Hae-joon.”

“Our chef is really handsome. How old are you?”

“Twenty-five.”

“But are you really a chef? It's such a waste to rot in the kitchen with that face. But then, is that why you were cast on the show?”

“Okay, okay, let's stop greeting each other and sit down.”

Jang Il-soo came out and organized the noisy seats.

When the four of them sat down at the table, a neat Korean meal of galbi-jjim (braised beef short ribs), kimchi, japchae(mixed vegetables), and more was set up.

While sharing the food and having a light conversation, Jang Il-soo brought up the story of the program.

“I'll talk about the filming location first. We rented a small old house in Yeonam-dong. We plan to remodel it nicely and film there.”

Late-Night Restaurant is filmed once every two weeks. Considering Hae-jun's circumstances, they decided to do it every Saturday night to Sunday morning, and said that they would edit the content filmed in one night into a 60-minute broadcast in two parts.

“We'll prepare all the ingredients, so Chef Cha Hae-joon doesn't have to prepare anything separately. Please come comfortably and focus on cooking.”

“You don't have to worry about the broadcast part, because actress Yoon Yeo-jin, actor Lee Seo-joon, and Hye-ri will lead it well.”

Shin Mi-young added after Jang Il-su finished his explanation to ease Hae-jun's worries, who was new to broadcasting.

"I'll prepare the ingredients."

"That would be a bother."

"No. I always prepare the ingredients for the dishes I make myself, so that's better. Just help me transport the ingredients from the store to Yeonnam-dong. I don't have a car."

"If that's easier for you, then do that. But you can’t prepare them in advance. We have to film the whole preparation process."

"I understand."

The youngest writer quickly typed up the conversation between Shin Mi-young and Hae-jun.

"But we'll have to prepare the seasonings and sauces, right?"

"I'll prepare those myself as well."

I can make all the seasonings that go into Korean food, starting with doenjang (soybean paste), soy sauce, and gochujang (red pepper paste).

If we use commercial seasonings, the taste will definitely be worse, so even if it's a hassle, it's better to prepare all the seasonings and ingredients that Hae-jun will use for filming to maintain the quality of the taste.

"Even the seasonings? There will probably be more Korean menus as we film the program."

"I'll end up making the sauce that goes into Korean food anyway."

"Didn't we say we were doing Western-style restaurants?"

Yoon Yeo-jin asked, adjusting her magnifying glass glasses.

"Yes, that's right."

"But you're making the sauce? That's incredibly difficult."

"I was interested, so I looked up recipes here and there and tried it."

"That's amazing. Our PDnim recruited a competent chef."

"Of course. I visited him several times to ask him to do it, and I finally persuaded him. Oh my~ Just thinking about that time."

Jang Il-su spoke with a mixture of regret and mischief.

Anyway, it was decided that Hae-jun would prepare the ingredients for all the dishes made on the program.

"Shouldn't we also divide up our roles?"

Lee Seo-jun asked Jang Il-su PD slyly.

When the PD nodded, Seo-jun took the lead in dividing up the roles.

"How about Teacher Yoon helps the chef and takes charge of the kitchen together? The brightest Hye-ri will receive the guests."

"Then what will oppa do?"

"Me? I'm in charge of washing dishes and odd jobs. I'll also help with serving when it's busy."

No one disagreed.

In fact, it was a role division that the production crew had already had in mind.

Even if Hae-jun was good at cooking, there would be many cases where he would have to give life counseling due to the nature of the program, and that was something that the oldest, Yoon Yeo-jin, should be in charge of. Hye-ri, who had a bright energy, would respond to the guests, and Seo-jin would be the most stable system to patch up any deficiencies here and there.

“We’ll stop filming.”

Satisfied with the results, PD Jang Il-su shouted out loud.

It was time to move locations and film the second part.

“Take a short break and then gather in Yeonnam-dong. The interior’s done, so let’s take a look around before the main filming. Maknae. Send the address of the filming location to the manager.”

“Yes, PD-nim.”

“Hae-jun-ssi, you don’t have a car, right? Ride with us.”

“I’ll do th···.”

“Wait. Don’t do that. Ride in my car.”

Lee Seo-jun intervened.
