Chapter .340

The next day, I had some things on my agenda. Number one thing being checking up on Wilma. She was still in the medbay and she was still evolving. But since she is taken care of, I don’t have to worry about her too much.

The next is Unika. She got one summoning contract yesterday, after she managed to summon a D-rank forest fox. It was nothing special, but after six attempts of getting goblins, kobolds and birds, she was more than happy to ‘have something cute’. Her words, not mine. Because in my opinion the birds could have been useful, and they were also a bit cute.

But the important thing was something on the surface. It was regarding the Nel look-a-like princess. I wanted to find out more about her, so after breakfast, I teleported myself to the Sawyer manor so I could get some info from Mariina. Besides, today is another lesson on Soul Magic, so someone would have to go get her anyway. I can get the info I need while I’m at it.

“I suppose you don’t get the daily tablet.” Mariina said. “It took up half of it.”

“... what did?”

“Princess Nevelle visiting the Royal Academy.” Mariina said. “Here. Just take a look.” She passed the single page wanna-be newspaper to me.

Nevelle, huh? That is almost dangerously close to Nel. You could easily shorten that name to Nel.

But still, this raises a lot of questions. This does confirm that that princess we saw was indeed a princess. A real Royal Princess. That part isn’t that surprising, as I basically already accepted that yesterday. But the part that I can’t understand is why would she walk? Sure the trip from the house she left to the Royal Academy isn’t all that long, but it is still a bit over 15 minutes of walking. That isn’t a distance a Royal should walk, at least as far as I know nobility.

And what about the building they left from? Let’s ask about it.

“... Cressida would know better, but I believe that it is the second Queen’s villa.”

“Ah. Alright. … it is surprisingly small for a Queen’s villa.”

“It is something she held before she took the seat of the Queen.” Mariina explained. “At first, she was just a concubine and the villa was given to her after she got pregnant.”

“... okay. And how did she become the Second Queen then?”

“It was after the First Queen’s death. In her final moments, the First Queen picked her to take the seat of the Queen.”

“That’s … dark.”

“It is life. Not everyone can resurrect people. Nor heal terminal illness.”

“... to be honest, I’m not sure if I could cure a terminal disease. Even I might be stuck in ‘I’ll just extend your life’ mode.”

“I suppose something only the First Saint could ever do might be too much for you.” Mariina said. “I assumed, since resurrection and all of that.”

“I mean, I’m not saying I couldn’t do it. Because if I really looked into it, I probably could figure out a way. Actually, I already know one way, but it is kind of … not what I would call a cure. And even though technically they would get better, it would require their death.”

“... I’m not sure I like that idea, but at the same time, I do want to know what you have in mind.”

“Nothing much really. It is just a card I have. Monster Reincarnation.”

“If I use it on a recently deceased human, or anything else that has recently died, I can take their soul and reincarnate them in the body of one of my monsters.” I explained. “That way, I would keep the soul of the person who died of a chronic illness, but they wouldn’t have to keep their sick body. … But that is where the morality of it comes into question. Are they even the same person after that? Sure they have their soul and memories, but their body will be completely different.”

“... I … I really shouldn’t have asked, should I?”

“If that is enough to break your mind, then no. You know, when I asked Lady Janina about it, she answered that they would be the same person. ‘Soul and memories are what makes you you.’ That is what she said. But she is one that can move her soul, so I suppose she wouldn’t hold a body to a great importance.”

“Well, when you say it like that. But still. Doesn’t the work we’ve put into our bodies mean anything?” Mariina asked. “Sure for us that specialize in magic, knowledge is the most important thing, but what about a warrior who spent his entire life training his body, making it better every day? How would they feel?”

“Exactly. And how do you think the common people would feel? If their Queen suddenly looked like a completely different person. They would not accept it, because for them, it wouldn’t be the truth. Even if the soul is the same. Most people can’t see souls. They only see the body.”

“Let’s be honest here, even you can’t. I think it is fair to say that no one can.”

“Actually, I kind of can.”

“... Wait, really? How?”

“Different Dimension Factory. When you are there, your avatar will reflect your soul, not your physical body. … well, at least by default until you learn how you can alter your avatar.”

“Grr. Now I really want to visit that place.”

“I do have a prototype device in the works. Still just waiting until Lady Janina can give me some sort of spell that can safely move souls into the Factory.”

“... don’t tell me you want me to be a test subject.”

“Do you think I’m dumb? I wouldn’t test it on you. I have no idea if it will be safe at all, so I’ll most likely use it on someone more expendable.”

“Thank the Goddess. I really thought you told me about it because you wanted me to test it.”

After our morning talks, I brought Mariina up to HomeBase for the lessons. First the Soul Magic, and after that I ‘convinced’ her to take part in a magic lesson held by one of my monsters. Specifically Magie, aka Magical Exemplar. I mean, she is an Earth Spellcaster, and she is always here, as she is permanently in the dragon avatar. I also summoned Gemini Elf to assist her.

Gemini Elf was actually quite interesting when she was in an avatar doll. Because an avatar doll is just one body, but Gemini Elf is two beings, they share one body. But they can swap between which one of them is in control. It is kind of cool, and could act as a base for Alice to learn how to swap who is in control with Mana. After Alice gets a bit better with Soul Magic.

But enough about Gemini Elf. Let’s talk about why I’d ask Mariina to take part in a magic lesson. Well, in all simplicity, I wanted to get some feedback on my monsters’ magic lessons from someone who is actually an expert. Mariina is already a huge help in the Soul Magic lessons with all the questions she knows to ask, so I want the same kind of knowledge on the regular magic lessons.

And I pay her with two Level Up!s, so it isn’t like she won’t get anything out of this. Today she got a level in the Magic Boost, as her Earth Magic was maxed out last time.

Actually, that got me thinking. When we were staying in the Sawyer manor, Alice was leveling up Paulina. And I remember Alice saying that Paulina only wanted levels for Earth and Water Magic, until the two were maxed out. So when Paulina fought Mariina, Paulina should have had LV.10 Earth and Water Magic, while Mariina only had LV.9 Earth Magic. But Mariina still won. So I guess that really proves that natural growth is a lot better than Level Up! growth.

Now as for what I actually wanted from this experiment, the feedback from Mariina, I got some good info from her. It will really help when I start holding actual lessons, so Mariina definitely earned today’s Level Ups.

The rest of the day for me was a lot of training. First a session of Draconic training with Lady Janina, Agunan and Himeśaila, then swordsmanship with one of my many warriors, today it being Freed the Brave Wanderer.

And then Space Magic with Cosmo Queen.

I was slowly getting better, but I still wasn’t to the point where I could actually use Space Magic in combat for anything but defenses. But I did have a good goal in mind. When Alice fought the Ursa Major, the bear had used an attack that shot ‘blades’ of Space Magic. It was kind of like a flying sword slash, except with Space Magic, and because the Ursa had five claws, it shot five of them at the same time. And I want to be able to use an attack like that. Well, except that I think I’ll only be shooting out one slash at a time, but still. A space cutter, or something like that. That is my current goal. Along with teleportation, but Cosmo Queen straight up said that teleportation is more difficult that the space cutter.

I had also begun to dip my fingers into Time Magic with Time Wizard. The Goddess did recommend that I do so, so I may as well. And it might be helpful for figuring out how to close dimensional fissures without Exodia.

… but admittedly, Time Magic is even more difficult than Space Magic. Space Magic makes some sense, but Time Magic just breaks the rules of reality too much, so it is difficult to suspend my belief enough. But I think with time, I can do it. I mean, something like accelerating my own time, or slowing my opponent's time is something I should be able to do with some practice. It is the major time warps that I really don’t like.

Come evening, I also got some news. Wilma’s evolution had finished and she had woken up. So of course I went to see her before I headed to bed.

When I got to the medbay, a few others were already there. Lua, Karl and Olia, as well as a few monsters in avatar dolls. Lua was working on checking out Wilma, while Karl was … I actually don’t know why he is here. Olia had brought some food for Wilma and had stayed for a bit.

I gently asked everyone but Lua to leave the room, just so we could have some privacy. Just so Wilma doesn’t have to show her status to outsiders. Actually, this will be the first time Lua will see it, so that is a first. Well, she does have access to things I’ve recorded with the Factory terminals, so she may have taken a look at some point.

“Hey Wilma. How are you feeling?”

“... Really good, my Lord. I’m sorry I was out of service for an entire day.” Wilma quickly apologized.

“Don’t worry about it. It was kind of my fault.”

“No. I should have evolved faster.” Wilma insisted.

“Actually, from what I’ve heard, just a bit over a day spent in evolution is extremely fast. I mean, even I was out for longer when I evolved.”

“Same with me.” Lua admitted.

“And our evolutions are considered fast, because we had optimal conditions. It can take multiple days to evolve if the conditions are worse.” I told Wilma something I’d learned from Laura. That was actually part of the reason I wanted to make the evolution pods.

“... Alright. … then thank you for taking care of me while I evolved.”

“Of course. That is part of your benefits.” I told her, before I got to the serious business. “... so, your status. Could you show it to us?”

“... Yes, I will. … Status Open.”

nro_8 So yeah. At the request of Marcov I've added how much Wilma's stats have grown, what skill levels have improved, and of course the [new] after her new skill. They will show how much her stats have improved since the last time they were shown, so in this case, that is how much Wilma's stats have grown from CH.336.

“Craftswoman, huh? Fitting to say the least.” I commented. “And you even got a racial skill. Congratulations.”

“... thanks.”

“Make sure you rest before you get back to work. So tomorrow, you’ll have a day off. No working. Make sure you are used to your increased stats and look over your body. Since you evolved, all of your blemishes and other skin issues should have disappeared, so if you don’t want them to return, maybe a visit to the spa will do you good.” I told Wilma. “You might also want a haircut, and perhaps a trim to your beard. They both grew out quite a bit during the evolution.”

“Y-Yes. I will. Thank you, My Lord.”

“Just Brian is fine.”

“Y-Yes, Brian. … thank you. You as well, Lady Lua.”

“Don’t lady me, please.” Lua commented.

“... yes. Lua. Thank you.”

nro_8 … so, I just realized something. I never specified what color hair Wilma has. And her beard color as well. Yes, she does have a beard. She is a dwarf, so she has one. Officially it is, from now on, blue. Azure blue to be more specific. Though when Brian first saw Wilma, it would have looked quite a bit darker or even black, because of all the dirt and soot that would have been in Wilma’s beard and hair.

Sorry for all of those that had some headcanon version of Wilma that I just ruined. I guess it is my fault for being a cheapskate who doesn’t have any custom illustrations for this series.
