Chapter 15

The next day, Nirra was in her father's forge. She wondered how she would make some gun cartridges to be able to start crafting a pistol revolver. The major drawback of the weapons she was currently using was that it took ages just to reload a single shot. With a revolving pistol, she could load six shots and fire them off one at a time. The first step is to invent the cartridge. The cartridge is a type of ammunition that consists of the propellant, which in this case is gunpowder. The projectile, or bullet, she could make by casting lead; the casing, for which she can just use parchment; and finally, the primer, for which she doesn't know where to get it.

The primer is the primary means of igniting the propellant. Like the flintlock pistol she has now, the revolving pistol she wants to make also has a hammer. When the hammer strikes the primer, the latter will ignite the propellant, which will in turn cause the projectile to fire off. The problem is, though, where can she find the right chemical compounds to make it? For its small size, the primer actually consisted of multiple layers of different compounds—compounds that she doesn't have access to, let alone produce.

She paced around inside the forge in a circle, trying to find a solution to the primer problem. Then it hit her. Maybe there is some sort of magical monster drop that may help her. She remembered when she requested an extermination and drop collection quest from the guild. The guild maid said something about a magic core. Maybe that's where she'll get the answer to her primer problem.

She then thought of Edwina from yesterday, who was an alchemist. Maybe she'll have some knowledge regarding magic cores. The problem is, where can she find her? She didn't know the location of her house, so this was going to be difficult.

She decided that she would start at the guild and look for her from there. So she went out and encountered her sister, who had just come back from sword training.

"Sis? Where are you going?" Ellie asked as she laid down the bag she was carrying on her back.

"I need to find Edwina" Nirra replied.

"The alchemist from yesterday? What for?" Ellie asked further.

"It's so I can improve my weapon," Nirra replied blatantly.

"I see. Can I come along? I'll help you look for her." She said.

"Sure, it'll help with the search," Nirra replied.

The two went ahead and made their first stop. Inside the Redfield guild, there were a lot of people who needed the guild's services, and lucky for them, Edwina was one of them. She was currently lined up, probably to complete a quest. The twins approached her and tapped her on the shoulder.

"Yes? Oh! Nirra! Ellie! I was just waiting for my turn to redeem this quest." Edwina said as she turned to face the twins.

"I see, I just needed your help with something," Nirra said.

"Oh, and what is it?" Edwina replied while she stepped backwards so she could keep up with the line.

"I need your help with magic cores." Nirra spoke as she stepped forward to follow Edwina.

"What about them?" Edwina asked.

"Are there any magic cores that would ignite by hitting it hard enough?" Nirra asked. Edwina thought for a moment, recalling the magic cores she experimented with.

"Oh! I think the doomslime core does that. I know because I've hit one with a hammer once and a small fire started." She explained, recalling the events.

"Why did you hit one with a hammer in the first place?" Ellie asked in confusion.

"Ah, It's more like an incident, tehee; I dropped a crate full of doomslime cores, and the cores ignited when some were hit by the falling hammer that I ran into." She explained.

"I see," Nirra commented.

"If you want, I could give some to you. I got more than enough for my experiments," She said as she moved backwards again to follow the line.

"That would be really helpful." Nirra spoke, thankful she doesn't have to risk her life fighting explosive slimes.

"Just let me finish this quest, and we can head over to my house and get some." Edwina said this, turned around, and found out she was at the front of the line.

"Here are all the health potions that were listed on the quest!" She spoke and placed the basket, which contained vials of liquid.

The guild maid nodded, grabbed the quest request from Edwina, and put a stamp on it. Afterwards, she handed Edwina the rewards of 40 silver coins.

"Alright, let's head over to my place," she announced after she grabbed the coins from the counter and placed them inside a small pouch.

The three walked out of the guild building and started walking north-east. They passed the streets that were stone, entering a zone close to the market. The place had different shops that sold different kinds of magical items, from armor to weapons and even potions. Edwina led the twins into a two-story building made out of wood. When they entered, they noticed that Edwina was running a small shop for potions, including mana potions, healing potions, and strength potions. The twins gazed at the different assortments of potions that Edwina had for sale. The two then noticed that Edwina was motioning for them to come follow her, so they did so. They entered a small room that had different containers for ingredients that helped her with her potions, as well as different bottles and equipment that you would find in a laboratory, like flasks and condensers.

The twins watched as Ediwna kneeled down and pulled out a crate that contained a lot of doomslime cores. They say cores, but they actually look more like medium-sized gems.

"Here you go. Remember, if you want to make it smaller, you can rub it with a grinder so it won't ignite." She explained.  Nirra nodded and took five out.

"This would do," Nirra said.

"Consider this as thanks for saving me from that bear yesterday," Edwina said with a smile.
