Crack-07

Looking at the Crack, I couldn't help but feel glad in making the decision to observe it personally.

"Good job, past me."

I suddenly felt the urge to pat myself on the shoulders. Better hold it in for now. I wasn't in a child form anymore, and there wasn't any Identity Veil obscuring me like in the Council Chambers.

Sigh.

Refocusing my attention, my eyes zoned in on the Crack.

Oh yeah. I could totally see a thousand of these cracks blotting out the sky and raining down whatever the hell comes from other dimensions onto human cities. A true-fashion apocalypse. At the very least, that was the apocalypse I was expecting.

But putting aside my wild fantasies, I wasn't just here to observe it up close. The reports I had gotten were…… interesting, to say the least. Well, interesting besides the whole "Crack is growing" part of it.

I could feel it. As an Origin. My Ability was resonating with it. The reports had talked about how some of the more powerful Origins in Divisions Michael and Uriel reportedly felt near this thing, but the words in the reports couldn't really say how so.

Now that I was here, it was an……odd feeling, to say the least. If I had to describe this, it almost felt as though something non-existent, somewhere within my consciousness, was pulsating rapidly the closer I got to it.

Now I could be certain that these interdimensional cracks were somehow related to our powers and how we got them. A step closer to the mystery of our Abilities. The mystery of us.

I didn't know how long I stood there, entranced by this pulsating feeling. From the reports, I knew this feeling was generally more pronounced on stronger Origins, so I knew I wasn't the only one who would be feeling this. At the very least, I'm sure the other Overseers would also be feeling this to a certain extent.

Alright, enough of that. Looking back at this thing, I couldn't help but recall the Visionary's words to me a long time ago, spoken back before even the Cordiale was founded.

-

"Listen Iv. When the Cracks begin appearing, the end times will come. Other worlds will come to our own, and our people will be scattered."

-

Wow, way to be clear, old man.

Not that he said this in English anyway. But seriously, was there just something regarding his Vision that forced him to be enigmatic and cryptic? It would have saved Project Overwatch a lot of trouble these past couple of decades. Worse, he was still probably keeping secrets from us. Although the man himself denied it numerous times in the past, I'm betting he hasn't even revealed half of what he saw in his Vision.

Funnily, those so called "experts" who later heard these words interpreted this as some sort of alien invasion through the Cracks. I snorted. They clearly watched too many sci-fi alien movies. It was obviously preposterous, just from the way it sounded alone. Like, why would aliens and monsters just…… appear? Here I was, afraid an entire ocean might spawn from these cracks and wash the world away, and there they were, grabbing sticks and cardboard playing mediaeval knights or some future sci-fi alien hunters.

"Pft."

A derisive chuckle left me just thinking about it again.

Anyways, I snapped myself out of my thoughts. Looking around me, I found myself standing a lot closer to the Crack than when I had first landed. It seems I've walking towards it without much thought. Around me, lab-coaters and technicians shuffled about, and there were tables, chairs and other science-y equipment methodically and neatly laid out. Very different from the messy forest previously. Most distinctively, there was a transparent barrier that enveloped the area close to the Crack. I think I remember reading the reports indeed saying something like that was placed.

In front of the barrier were several guards, and these were fellows I could make out as definitely Origin in a glance, just from their special, all-black uniforms. Each guard had some futuristic weapon that probably complemented their Abilities, from advanced, handheld rifles, to what appeared to be a massive warhammer slung over the back on a particularly large guy. Intimidating indeed.

"Oh? They're here too."

In the distance, I spotted Riana and Keith getting off a lift that had landed back near the entrance, alongside a few other personnel from Uriel who also seemed to be unloading some equipment.

Riana looked to be feeling something. From what I saw, she was staring at the Crack absentmindedly the whole time whilst walking over.

Keith had your typical reaction of mouthing "Holy Shit" (I'm a certified forensic lip reader, for the record. Don't ask why.) At the same time, he was just staring wide-eyed at the Crack, but quickly adjusted and returned to a normal demeanor whilst walking. Guess those two are gonna be getting assigned to guard duty soon.

Speaking of getting assigned:

"Where the hell is the supervisor?"
