Chapter 161

I remembered the planetarium as a place to watch the constellations projected by the projector while listening to the commentary, but it seemed that things had changed a lot lately.

“It’s amazing, Yuya-kun. The starry skies of the world are so beautiful”

Kaede’s voice was also somewhat enchanting. That was just as well. The starry sky above us was the brightest I’d ever seen. The narration by the famous voice actress with a deep bass tone and the soothing music lead you to the creation of a fantastic world. The program took you on a journey around the world in a boat, visiting the skies of various places.

A grand adventure to the stars of the world, from the northern to the southern hemisphere. The Southern Cross, the Milky Way, which could not be seen in the city, and the stars reflected in the water mirror on the surface of the lake. The fragile but beautiful night sky and the power of the rising sun. I was so overwhelmed by the spectacular scenery that I couldn’t find the words to describe it. But–

“I’d like to go with Yuya-kun someday.”

“I’d love to go with Kaede sometime.”

Our voices overlapped, and we couldn’t help but look at each other and chuckle. I had no idea that we were thinking about the same thing.

“I would like to see the real stars, not just these images. I’m sure I’d be even more moved than I am now.”

“Yeah… if I could watch such a beautiful starry sky with Kaede, I probably wouldn’t be able to speak anything.”

“… Why is that?”

“It’s fun just to be with the person you love, and on top of that, there’s this beautiful view? With my limited vocabulary, I’m sure the only thing that would come out of my mouth will be; It’s beautiful.”

It was not only the starry sky that directed these words, but also Kaede. Rather, I would say it while looking into Kaede’s pearly eyes, not while looking at the sky. AAH, but if it was Kaede, it would surely turn into a single question.

—Which is more beautiful, the starry sky or me?

I think she would ask me if I’m interested. I’m sure her aim would be to try to confuse me, but that would be sweet. At that moment, I think all I would be able to observe is Kaede looking at the stars spreading endlessly across the sky and being moved.

I’m sure Kaede’s cheeks would turn red as she answered me.

—What are you doing looking at me when the sky is full of stars?

What would I say? It would indeed be true, but I would be more embarrassed when she would say such a thing.

“… Yuya-kun? What’s wrong with you? Are you okay?”

“It’s okay. I was just thinking that Kaede is more beautiful than any starry sky.”

“—!? Yuya, Yuya-kun!? What are you talking about!?”

“… Yeah, forget it.”

Why am I running my mouth about!? I reacted to Kaede’s question while I was still immersed in my imagination of the future, of all things. What do you mean “Kaede’s sky is more beautiful than any starry sky”! That was a bit of a rhetorical question, wasn’t it! Well, though the answer is true.

“I can’t… I can’t forget. If someone said that I was more beautiful than this beautiful starry sky… I would be embarrassed, but I would jump for joy.”

“No, as expected, jumping around is not a good idea… Yes, come here.”

I quietly opened my arms. This was a signal to Kaede, who sometimes looked at me like she wanted to be pampered when she slept at night.

“Ehehe, Yuya-kun finally gave me permission to hug him. Mmm! I’m so happy.”

“… and look at the stars, right?”

“I don’t want to be told by you, Yuya-kun. But… I’m glad you can see me.”

Kaede smiled and rubbed her cheek against my chest like a kitten. We gazed at the sky together, as I stroked her head. The image changed from stars to aurora borealis, and a mysterious world spread out in front of me. A curtain of colorful lights. There in the pitch-black night sky was a view I would like to see at least once in my lifetime.

“Stars in the sky are nice, but I would also like to see the aurora borealis. You have to be in the dry air and in the polar regions to see them.”

“I want to go to many places with Kaede.”

“Let’s go. Let’s go to various places and make memories together. We have plenty of time.”

Kaede whispered softly in my ear and hugged me tightly. Yes, I will always be with Kaede even after I graduate from high school, go to college, and become a working adult. So we have plenty of time from now on.

“Thank you, Kaede.”

“You’re welcome. So, Yuya-kun. It’s almost the end of the show. Is that thing still on?”

Was that what you were talking about? Was it the once-in-a-lifetime confession I made at the extracurricular camp? To be honest, I thought the next time I would say that would be when I proposed to you.

“Eh, it’s good. Eh. let me hear it again under this starry sky.”

Kaede whispered in my ear in a begging, but somewhat pleading voice. It was true that it didn’t diminish, but I have a feeling that if I say it over and over again, my love would be diminished by the weight of the words I put into it. But I can’t not say anything. It’s a fantastic atmosphere, after all.

“Kaede… I love you.”

I said quietly and locked lips with Kaede. I didn’t say it in words, but I poured all the love I could into that kiss.

“Yuya-kun… I love you too.”

Kaede kissed me back. We told each other we loved each other again under the stars.
