Chapter 46

A half-transformed arrancar waved his disproportionately large arms as it fell to the ground. Its broken half-mask attempted to repair itself only to shatter into white particles in a flash.

I looked at the failed arrancar with pity in my eyes. I wished I had not left my children with Nel.

“Another failure.” I couldn’t help but click my tongue at my fifth failure to turn a gillian into an arrancar. Once again, my efforts had ended in disappointment.

Cirucci sensed my disappointment and offered her support.

“Take a moment to rest,” She said, her hand making circular motions on my back.

It would be better if the ring I had given her was not digging into my back with each light hit from her hand. Regardless, I was grateful for the gesture.

“You're right.” I nodded, feeling grateful. “I need to rest before continuing.”

The half transformed arrancar roared at us, its anger palpable in the air. It was clearly not feeling grateful being my experiment subject.

Cirucci stopped her soothing motions, a tick forming on her left eyebrow. Her eyes narrowed as she observed the angry arrancar before us.

“Such an ungrateful beast.” She scoffed, hitting him with the round end of her whip, the crack echoing through the room. “You don’t deserve to serve under us.”

The beast retreated, seeing the gap I had just opened for its escape. It rushed into it, rapidly disappearing into the sands of Hueco Mundo.

Turning to me, Cirucci asked with a hand on her hip. “Are you sure about letting them run away? Others will discover it and everyone will know about it.”

I looked at her with a smile. “I’m counting on it. The more we try to hide our intentions, the more suspicious everyone will become.”

I wasn't worried about being caught. If Nnoitra could kill potential recruits and Granz could devour other Arrancars without punishment.

In such a chaotic world, my attempts to create arrancars from mindless Gillians seemed like a child’s play that would hardly raise a few eyebrows.

Cirucci raised an eyebrow. “if you believe so. But keeping the successful ones would be better.”

“Yes.” I nodded, understanding the logic behind her words. “Besides, I feel like I'm getting closer to replicating the process of the Hogyoku. All of the Gillians, except for the first one, got stronger after tearing their masks, and they have all formed small swords.”

The sword was small because of the partially torn mask, caused by the incomplete process. The gillians had only managed to get a small fragment of shinigami’s power, barely enough to create a knife.

With each experiment, I could sense progress, a glimmer of hope that I was inching closer to unraveling the secrets of the arrancars and the future of our race.

"Indeed." Cirucci chimed in, a sly smile dancing on her lips. "It was quite comical to see that big Gillian waving around a tiny Zanpakuto."

She had enjoyed teasing that particular Gillian.

I laughed along with her, the absurdity of the scene playing out in my mind once again. It was moments like these that brought a touch of amusement to our tension filled life in Las Noches.

It was a pity I had to continue with my experiments.

“Let's release the next one from the cell.” I said as I pressed a button beside the wall.

Man, I loved invading hidden buildings that belonged to a certain pink-haired mad scientist.

A Gigant Gillian staggered as it entered into the room, crouching to avoid hitting its head on the door frame. Its white mask shining under the faint light of the room.

I focused my spiritual energy and launched my spirit-possessing technique on it. Wrapping my spiritual energy around it like a snake, I took control of its body.

Remembering my experience with the hogyoku, I started to replicate the process that had transformed me into an arrancar.

First, I stripped it from the upper part of his mask, this time managing to tear half of it, leaving only the lower half.

Concentrating I took what used to be his upper mask and condensed it into layers of soul as was described in canon by the blacksmith of the zero division.

With a single-minded determination, I willed the soul layers to take the form of a sword. The blade shone with a brilliant white light, illuminating the room.

The now arrancar, started to shrink down into a 3 meters tall yellow haired half african man, his new sword floating to his hand.

I smiled, looking at the kneeling man. “Welcome, my dear arrancar.”

"You are lucky to have been chosen to become an arrancar." Cirucci added.

The new arrancar looked at us, his eyes and mouth widened in fear. It stood up and rushed through the wall, escaping from us.

I brought up my hands to my face in shame. “I hate not having Aizen’s charisma.” I whispered.

“I don’t think that’s the problem.” Cirucci corrected me. “I think you need to help a soul of the many inside the gillian to win over control of the body.”

I hit my left open palm with my right fist. “Right, I need it to have a mind, otherwise it will keep escaping from us.”

“You can be quite silly.” Cirucci said, annoyed.

Cracking my knuckles, I prepared to work on the next Gillian. I still had 51 remaining from the group Nel and I had captured, many having died in the path here.

Aonte Man, my back had been hurting like crazy. Stress can seriously injure your spine (I blame my crappy job).

Sado Yasutora gathered his breath, dodging another rock thrown at him.

Renato smirked at him. “That arm of yours is perfect for defense, but it’s only so so for attack.”

Sado winced, having noticed how hard it was to hit more than two times with his blast.

“What you need is to evolve your Fullbringer into something else that can defeat your opponents.” Renato explained. “The problem is your nature.”

“I promised to not hurt others with these fists of mine.” Sado replied.

“Kiddo, you need to be more flexible. There are fights you have to fight, and sometimes the only option is to fight back,” Renato advised.

Sad looked up the sky, contemplating his words.
