“What do you think we’re here for?” Duan Zhen calmly countered, unsure of what memories were in his mind.

Li Xi tilted his head, casually saying, “To kill me?”

Duan Zhen shook his head. “No, we’re here to save you.”

“To save me?” Li Xi was taken aback. “I didn’t expect anyone would want me alive… What faction are you from?”

Duan Zhen remained silent, shaking his head.

Thinking that Duan Zhen was unwilling to disclose, Li Xi didn’t press further. Instead, he asked with interest, “So, what’s your plan?”

“The situation here is different from what we anticipated,” Duan Zhen replied, then asked, “Have you noticed anything unusual here? Is there a way out?”

Li Xi clicked his tongue. “It’s not clear yet, but it seems to be some kind of illusion… But that guy, Hewlett, actually got involved. Could he be here just to mock me?”

His voice trailed off in the latter part of the sentence, barely audible, but Duan Zhen caught it and his pupils slightly contracted. “You said Hewlett, isn’t that your brother?”

“You, an ordinary person, how come you have such keen ears?” Li Xi looked at him in wonder. “And your strength is also abnormal.”

“It’s natural,” Duan Zhen said.

“Fine,” Li Xi didn’t delve further. “You don’t know about Hewlett, then you probably know who I am?”

“I don’t,” Duan Zhen said calmly. “We’re just here to rescue you from being trapped.”

Seeming surprised by his response, Li Xi’s eyes widened for a moment. But the look of confusion and surprise lasted only a second on his face. The next moment, he burst into laughter, lying on the bed and gasping for breath, making Duan Zhen almost afraid that he would laugh too hard and have a seizure.

“You know nothing about me and yet you came to rescue me. Do you think I’ll believe your words?” After a while, Li Xi finally stopped, wiping away the tears of laughter, his voice still trembling. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll kill you?”

“You won’t,” Duan Zhen said, staring straight at Li Xi. “Although I’ve just met you, I believe you wouldn’t do such a thing.”

“Based on my actions during the day?” Li Xi raised an eyebrow, smiling but with a hint of sadness in his eyes. “That person is long gone.”

He didn’t dwell on the topic any longer but changed the subject. “Let’s talk about something else.”

Duan Zhen, straightforward as ever, asked, “Do you have a way to get out of here?”

“I’m starting to like you now,” Li Xi chuckled, but didn’t answer his question. “There’s no way for now. Let’s take it one step at a time. It’s time to sleep.”

Li Xi yawned and waved to Duan Zhen. “You can go to the other room or somewhere else to sleep.”

He lay down on the large bed, staring at the canopy, murmuring, “It’s really nostalgic…”

Duan Zhen returned to the adjacent room, sitting on the bed to gather his thoughts.

Now it was certain that Li Xi’s altered memories had two layers. According to Li Xi’s explanation, what they experienced during the day was what Lance had experienced in the past. In reality, Lance was just trapped in this illusion, forced to relive these experiences, and the purpose of the mastermind behind this was to kill him.

For Lance, this was the best explanation, but for the missioners, there must be other secrets involved.

Moreover, Li Xi’s words about Hewlett also piqued his interest.

Duan Zhen only slept for two hours around midnight. Around five in the morning, he heard faint sounds outside, as if the servants in the mansion were starting their day’s work.

This illusion might be a cycle, Duan Zhen thought. He sat on the bed for a while, listening to Li Xi sit up, before he decided to walk out.

“According to the progress, this illusion should last for several days,” Li Xi squinted as he sat on the bed, his hair messy, a strand sticking up, swaying with his movements. “You can continue to be my attendant for these few days.”

He rubbed his eyes and cast a cleaning spell on himself, then turned to Duan Zhen and cast the same spell on him.

Duan Zhen felt refreshed, somewhat surprised.

“Cleaning magic is essential for mages who stay at home and don’t go out every day,” Li Xi lazily said, waving at him. “My magic is limited, and using two spells is tiring. Come over and help me change clothes.”

He appeared different from the Li Xi who was concerned about his appearance the previous day. Duan Zhen walked over silently, pulled him up from the bed, and helped him change clothes, while asking, “I thought about it last night, Hewlett’s name sounds familiar, like… a demon king?”

He spoke hesitantly, as if unsure.

Li Xi looked down at him, a hint of amusement in his eyes. “Then you’re not very well-informed.”

Duan Zhen’s breath caught for a moment.

“I believe you know nothing anymore,” Li Xi leaned closer, a smile playing on his lips. “Otherwise, you would have realized the identity of the person in front of you as soon as you heard my name.”

Duan Zhen’s gaze darkened slightly. “Lance Philotte? Is that you?”

“That was my old name,” Li Xi said with a smile. “Later, I changed it. Now, I’m Lance Senafel Philotte.”

Although he continued to smile, his gaze remained fixed on Duan Zhen.

Duan Zhen’s pupils constricted.

“It seems you’ve heard of this name… Is it Senafel?” Li Xi sighed. “Even a gemstone is more famous than me. My stint as a demon king has been quite the failure.”

Duan Zhen remained silent, his brain working rapidly.

In this world of Hewlett, it turned out to be Senafel’s memories, and the person playing the role of Senafel here was Li Xi. He couldn’t help but wonder if this would attract the attention of the demon king.

Could the Hewlett who appeared earlier be the real demon king? Or is this just Senafel’s memory?

Seeing him still silent, Li Xi tilted his head, understandingly. “Regretting rescuing me now? Well, everyone is hoping for my death, so why would anyone come to save me?”

While saying this, his face carried a hint of melancholy.

“No, I want to save you,” Duan Zhen immediately declared.

Even though there were countless rational reasons for Duan Zhen to help Li Xi, his spontaneous words were more a result of seeing the desolation in Li Xi’s eyes.

Such an expression shouldn’t be present on Li Xi’s face.

“Why did you become the demon king?” he couldn’t help but ask again.

“Be patient, you’ll find out,” Li Xi winked at him, drawing out his words. “I’ve been standing for so long, help me change clothes, I’m tired.”

“Alright,” with the experience of helping Li Xi change into pajamas last time, Duan Zhen was very skilled this time, except that he still looked away while removing Li Xi’s pants, avoiding any clumsiness.

They walked out together, Li Xi waved to the steward, “Where’s Hewlett?”

The steward was taken aback. “Lord Lance, there’s no one named Hewlett in the mansion.”

“I see,” Li Xi nodded casually, showing no sign of surprise.

Duan Zhen stood silently behind him, waiting for the steward to leave before asking in a low voice, “What do we do next?”

“Let nature take its course,” Li Xi rubbed his temples, lost in thought. “But I feel like I’ve forgotten something.”

After a moment of contemplation, he shrugged. “Oh well, if I’ve forgotten, it must not be important. Let’s go out. Aren’t your companions still outside?”

“Yes,” Duan Zhen nodded.

“Let’s go,” Li Xi took his hand, pausing for a moment, his gaze suspicious as he stared at their clasped hands.

Why was his movement so skilled? Li Xi didn’t remember having the habit of casually holding hands with strangers.

Duan Zhen countered, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” Li Xi said thoughtfully, but instead of letting go, he tightened his grip on Duan Zhen’s hand, occasionally rubbing his fingertips over it.

Duan Zhen silently withdrew his hand.

Li Xi glanced at him, unable to suppress a laugh. “Why do you look like you’ve been violated?”

The words sounded completely natural, as if Li Xi wasn’t the one still holding the other’s hand as if nothing had happened.

Awww, poor Li Xi sounds quite jaded, we kinda knew that what happened to him when he was a noble was bad, but I don’t really want to see him suffer
