On the other side, with the distraction caused by the explosion at the front gate, Li Xi and his group managed to sneak in smoothly, encountering almost no obstacles along the way.

Crouching low and using various decorative rock formations as cover, they quickly arrived at the location pointed out by Dan Zuo.

“There’s someone inside,” Duan Zhen raised his hand to signal everyone to stop.

He listened carefully for a moment, then whispered, “It’s Soren.”

The place seemed to be a woodshed, but as they approached, they caught a faint smell of blood. Not fresh blood, but rather the lingering scent of accumulated blood over time.

Looking through the window, Li Xi commented, “This seems to be Soren’s playground.”

“Playground?” Duan Zhen furrowed his brow.

With such a smell of blood, it wouldn’t be impossible for this place to be an execution ground.

“That’s what he said; I’ve never been here,” Li Xi shrugged, “I’m not interested in this.”

Duan Zhen nodded, feeling relieved.

According to Li Xi, they had no chance against Soren. But at this distance, he could already feel the breath of the mission targets weakening. If they just stood by, they might die before their eyes.

“Do we go in?” Li Xi asked him curiously. “If we go in, we might not rescue them and might even get all of you trapped.”

Rescuing the people was naturally the priority, Duan Zhen thought for a moment, then pulled out a wooden cylinder about half a finger long from his backpack.

Li Xi watched him with interest.

Duan Zhen leaned against the wall and listened to the movements inside.

Soren wasn’t torturing them right now. He stood in front of the two, surveying their bloodied bodies.

“Rest here for now. There will be many things for you to do in the coming days,” he smiled, his demeanor graceful, showing no signs of being a demon who enjoyed torturing others.

The two mission targets didn’t speak. They had been hanging in this room in a crucified position for a day, plus watching their companion die in agony. They were already exhausted.

Now they were still hanging on just because they were unwilling to die here, but Soren was also afraid of accidentally killing them like the previous ones, so he showed some mercy.

They were a small team, having gone through several games together. They didn’t expect to fail here today. They regretted underestimating this game too much. If they had known, they should have stopped their captain from suggesting to infiltrate the enemy’s camp.

In the daytime, they could still get a little respite from the false mercy of the enemy. But at night, the people in this world would turn into undead, and they were now bound here, unable to free their hands to deal with them. They were afraid they would die here tonight.

Just as they were despairing, one of the mission targets suddenly saw a head peeking out of the window opposite.

The person moved quickly, showing only a pair of eyes. After assessing the situation inside the room, they extended a cylindrical object.

It was Duan Zhen! Duan Zhen was actually here to rescue them.

The mission target on the left showed a look of surprise, but also knew they couldn’t act rashly, so they lowered their head to conceal their expression.

But the momentary abnormality was caught by Soren. He frowned, wanting to turn his head back, when a thin silver needle flew from somewhere and pierced his neck.

“What’s that?” Li Xi asked curiously.

“It’s a tranquilizer dart. The anesthetic on it can knock out several adult men,” Duan Zhen whispered.

However, Duan Zhen knew full well that the tranquilizer dart was at best only effective against ordinary people. Seeing that he had succeeded, without waiting for Soren to collapse, he immediately stood up and jumped into the window, launching an attack on him.

“You, you’re the attendant beside Philotte!” Soren covered his neck where he had been pricked, pulled out the silver needle, and dropped it on the ground, making a soft clink.

Duan Zhen didn’t say much to him. He pulled out a silver handgun from somewhere and fired two shots at Soren.

A great sense of crisis surged up in Soren’s heart. He quickly drew his sword, narrowly avoiding one of the bullets, but the other grazed his shoulder, leaving a bloody trail.

The pain caused his features to contort, and his eyes erupted with intense malice. “Are you comrades of these people? Does Philotte know you’re here to rescue them? But… whether he knows or not doesn’t matter. Attacking a noble is enough to warrant a death sentence, and you’ll deserve to be torn apart.”

The long sword in his hand emitted a sky-blue light.

Duan Zhen’s heart skipped a beat.

Li Xi’s assessment of Soren’s strength was not wrong. Being able to dodge bullets at such close range showed remarkable reflexes.

Even though he wielded a more advanced weapon, it didn’t seem to give him much advantage.

Li Xi stood by, watching the spectacle unfold, unconcerned about others discovering him despite using magic. He murmured softly, “Let the fight begin.”

This was a perfect opportunity to gauge the strength of Duan Zhen and his companions.

Duan Zhen heard him and glanced at him somewhat helplessly.

The tense atmosphere was somewhat relieved by Li Xi’s presence.

After exchanging a few blows, Duan Zhen had a rough estimate of Soren’s strength. Although Soren possessed extraordinary strength and speed, it was evident that he had never truly engaged in a life-and-death struggle. During their fight, he showed signs of hesitation and fear of getting injured, which provided Duan Zhen with many opportunities to attack.

As time passed, the effects of the tranquilizer dart began to take hold. Soren’s body swayed unsteadily, and with gritted teeth, he attempted to charge out of the house.

Two people who had been lying in ambush outside seized the opportunity.

His actions were thwarted, and Soren ended up rolling on the ground in a sorry state.

“You… despicable scoundrels!” He angrily brushed off the dust from his face, cursing while covertly surveying his surroundings with his eyes.

“No need to look around. No one will come to rescue you,” Duan Zhen stepped out of the house, stating calmly.

Sun Le and Dan Zuo quickly entered the house, cut the ropes binding the two people’s wrists, and helped them out, one on each side.

“Captain, the captain was killed by him. We watched helplessly as the captain was tortured by him until he breathed his last,” one of them choked back tears.

“I understand your feelings, but there’s not much time for grieving now. You must pull yourselves together and leave this world, only then can you honor your captain’s sacrifice,” Sun Le said calmly.

“You’re right,” the person wiped away the tears welling up in his eyes.

They swiftly left the battlefield with the two injured comrades — although Duan Zhen sounded confident, the others were only lured away by Xia Qirong and might return at any moment to find out what had happened.

“Soren is about to unleash his ultimate move,” Li Xi sat on the railing of the corridor, propping his chin on his arm and smiling mischievously. “It’s said to be a power passed down in their family, capable of harnessing the power of the heavens and the earth. I was fortunate enough to witness his father use it once. It was quite a spectacle, but also immensely powerful. One careless move could result in death.”

His voice was amplified, but Soren seemed not to have heard at all, his gaze fixed on Duan Zhen with hatred.

This was probably another aspect of the mysterious magic.

Although in the midst of a tense standoff, Duan Zhen couldn’t help but begin to wonder if the final boss they had to face would possess such mystical and unpredictable abilities.

He was certainly not afraid, but he worried about the ordinary people who had managed to survive until now.

“Are you looking down on me?” Soren keenly noticed his momentary distraction and erupted in rage. The sky-blue light on his long sword intensified, gradually becoming blindingly bright, to the point where it was difficult to keep one’s eyes open.

Duan Zhen could sense the immense and terrifying power contained within. Without further hesitation, he fired two more shots, interrupting Soren’s power buildup.

However, even interrupted, that power was not something an ordinary person could withstand. Duan Zhen leaped away from the battlefield in quick succession, but he was still affected by the energy.

He felt the shockwave of energy pass by his cheek, but it brought no pain, as if it were just a gentle breeze slipping away from him.

At the same time, he didn’t notice that the ruby amulet in his arms, after flashing a burst of light, seemed to dim considerably.

As the dust settled, Soren lay on the ground, his condition unknown.

Duan Zhen breathed a sigh of relief, about to leave, when he noticed a change in the person on the ground.

The clothes were stretched taut by wriggling muscles, the fair face twitched, veins bulged, and the face turned purple. In just a few seconds, his body had transformed from that of a normal human into something monstrous, with even the once gentle and refined face becoming grotesque and terrifying.

“Ah! This is probably an alteration made by the illusion,” Li Xi showed no fear, still swaying his legs not far from the monster. “They were quiet and died off earlier.”

“Let’s go!” Without waiting for Duan Zhen’s reaction to this statement, he was suddenly pulled off the railing by someone and stuffed into their arms, quickly fleeing from the monster.

Author’s note:

Li Xi: This is not what I expected (puzzled).

Duan Zhen: Running away with the cat that’s been causing trouble.

I completely forgot about the amulet… :’)))
