As they fled, Li Xi was held in Duan Zhen’s arms and couldn’t resist peeking out curiously. “What disgusting creature is that? It looks so ugly,” he said with a tone full of disdain, which made Duan Zhen quite helpless. He lifted Li Xi up a bit higher and said, “If you find it ugly, then don’t look.”

Despite his adult-sized physique, Li Xi was still light for him. He could easily carry him for kilometers without getting out of breath.

Initially, Li Xi obediently stayed in his arms, but as Duan Zhen dodged left and right, avoiding the monster, Li Xi became curious. “Aren’t you tired?” he asked.

“I’m okay,” Duan Zhen replied, dodging another attack from a monster and then accelerating to turn a corner, hiding behind a building.

Since Soren had turned into a monster, others in the city had also transformed into horrifying creatures like him. They roamed around, saliva dripping from their mouths, clumsily searching for the scent of living humans.

“It’s really amazing,” Li Xi said, leaning against the wall and looking outside, but Duan Zhen pulled him back by the collar of his shirt.

Without getting angry, Li Xi tilted his head and asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Be careful not to be discovered,” Duan Zhen warned.

He was worried about the others. If Sun Le and Dan Zuo hadn’t taken the two injured people with them, they would have had plenty of room to escape, but those two might become burdens. And there was Xia Qirong; if he was alone, leading so many people away, who knew if he had encountered any trouble.

“There don’t seem to be many people in the city who can turn into monsters,” Li Xi whispered, “Otherwise, it would have been packed with muscled monsters already.”

Duan Zhen frowned and grunted in agreement, then asked, “Do you know how to kill these monsters or turn them back to normal?”

“I don’t know,” Li Xi rubbed his chin, “Maybe your weird weapon can kill them?”

He was referring to the gun.

Duan Zhen said, “We can try, but the sound of gunfire will attract more monsters. If we fail, the consequences could be very bad.”

Li Xi didn’t say anything, just smiled at him.

Duan Zhen suddenly realized that the person in front of him was Senafel, not Li Xi. As time passed, the two figures seemed to gradually merge, and in some actions and dialogues, he could hardly discern the difference between the two.

Looking at Li Xi, Duan Zhen couldn’t help but ask, “Do you feel like… you’ve lost some memories?”

“I do feel that way,” Li Xi nodded, “But if I can’t remember, it probably isn’t important. If it’s important, I’ll remember it eventually.”

Before Duan Zhen could say anything else, he abruptly stopped, pressing Li Xi against him and rolling to the side.

The next moment, where they had just been, was smashed by a wooden stick, bricks bursting and dust filling the air.

“Ahh…” The giant monster slowly lifted the wooden stick, mouth open, emitting an incomprehensible roar. Its dull eyes moved like mechanical gears, locking onto Duan Zhen and Li Xi. Saliva dripped from its mouth, quickly forming a small puddle on the ground.

“Ugh, it’s even more disgusting up close,” Li Xi covered his mouth and nose, pushing Duan Zhen. “Let’s get out of here.”

This time, Duan Zhen didn’t plan to run away. He shielded Li Xi behind him and asked in a low voice, “Where do you think its weakness is?”

“Although it has turned into a monster, its base is still human, so its weakness is probably in the heart,” Li Xi blinked his eyes. “I’m not sure, though. It’s the first time I’ve seen such a thing. You should try it and find out.”

“Okay,” Duan Zhen didn’t say much, raising his hand and firing a shot at the monster.

The monster was incredibly strong and had keen vision, but it didn’t show any intention of dodging when Duan Zhen fired. The bullet pierced through its left chest, splattering blood everywhere.

Feeling the pain, the monster roared angrily, lifting the wooden stick to strike Duan Zhen. However, Duan Zhen didn’t move. He squinted his eyes, swiftly replaced fresh bullets, and fired again.

This time, the bullet didn’t penetrate but stayed in the monster’s muscles before suddenly exploding.

Blood splattered everywhere, and Duan Zhen pulled Li Xi back a few steps, shielding him. Despite his efforts, he couldn’t avoid getting splashed with a few drops of blood.

He kept his eyes on the monster, unaware of the slight change in Li Xi’s gaze.

The monster’s chest was blown open, and it fell to the ground with a thud, never to get up again. It seemed that the weak point of these monsters was indeed their hearts. As long as the heart was destroyed, they could be killed.

Knowing the weakness, these creatures became much easier to deal with.

Li Xi curiously peeked out again. “Although it looks like a big guy, it’s actually quite weak. Are you going to kill all the monsters in the city?”

Without waiting for Duan Zhen to speak, Li Xi continued, “Just kill them. These things are so ugly, wandering around in my hometown is really annoying.”

As he spoke, there was no trace of killing intent in his eyes, but his tone carried a hint of aggressiveness.

Duan Zhen remained silent, pulling his hand and leading him outside. “The smell of blood here is too strong. It’s not good to stay here for long. Let’s leave and regroup with the others.”

Li Xi obediently followed him as they walked.

Along the way, they encountered many more monsters, all of which were killed by Duan Zhen using the same method. As they progressed, the path behind them seemed to turn into a river of blood, with copious amounts of blood freely flowing on the road.

Li Xi glanced back, seemingly reminded of some unpleasant memories, his expression darkening.

When Duan Zhen found the other three people, they had already gathered together, with three of them carrying two injured individuals. Fortunately, the slow movements of the monsters prevented them from getting hurt.

“We’ve only been here for the second day, and monsters are running rampant during the day. If we want to survive for ten days, who knows what other chaotic things will happen later,” Xia Qirong, the team’s medic, spoke up. He hadn’t learned any magic but had bought a portable medical device with a large amount of points. It proved to be very useful, as a flash of white light healed the wounds gradually.

“This thing seems like healing magic,” Li Xi commented casually. “Only the folks from the Temple of Light would use it.”

“We’re staunch atheists,” Xia Qirong replied without much thought, then paused. “Well, maybe not so staunch now, but this thing has nothing to do with the Temple of Light. It’s high-tech, supposedly centuries ahead of us.”

Li Xi tilted his head, not quite understanding his meaning.

“Don’t say so much,” Duan Zhen frowned. “Quickly treat them, and then let’s find a way to break through.”

“Just kill them all,” Li Xi interjected.

“It won’t be that simple,” Duan Zhen frowned.

For some reason, he always felt a sense of unease in his heart, as if following Li Xi’s words to do so would lead to very bad consequences.

After a while, he said, “These monsters only roam within the city. Let’s find a house to hide in. If we don’t make any noise or get seen, we can safely get through this.”

Although they had some doubts about his decision, the others trusted Duan Zhen’s judgment and immediately worked together to find a suitable hiding place.

The owner of the house seemed to have lived well, as all the windows were covered with cloth curtains. They pulled all the curtains shut, set traps at the door, silently checked the house, and then sat down to rest.

“Why don’t we kill them?” Li Xi leaned against Duan Zhen and whispered in his ear.

“There’s no need,” Duan Zhen also lowered his voice. “They turned into undead last night and became monsters today. Even if we kill them all, they will resurrect, perhaps turning into something new. It’s better to let them remain as they are now. At least we understand their weaknesses.”

Li Xi smiled at him. “You always think things through.”

The youth’s obedience was more like Li Xi, not Senafel. But Duan Zhen could see the difference between the two in the cold indifference that Senafel showed without any attempt to conceal it, unlike Li Xi, who often liked to cuddle up to him. Yet, Duan Zhen couldn’t help but miss him more at this moment than ever before.
