Fanyin trees are a type of demon, the only kind of demon that was completely selfless. Or, more accurately, rather than calling it a demon, it should be called a minor deity. Fanyin trees cultivate through the wishes and beliefs which was why most Fanyin trees were wishing trees located at monasteries or Taoist temples.

Fanyin trees would produce a leaf every decade and this leaf would contain the Fanyin tree’s blessing, so it could be used as an amulet. It could also be made into medicine and the effectiveness of the medicine was dependent on the wish one made to the Fanyin tree. There were not many people who could cultivate this type of medicine, but it just so happened that Mi Wan could do exactly that. Her current goal was to find that Fanyin tree, ask for a leaf, and then wish to lose weight!

When Mi Wan climbed over to Fan Chen’s courtyard, Fan Chen was able to sense her and paused. Why was Mi Wan climbing over walls even now when she was free to leave her house? But as curious as he was, he did not stop her to ask about it. She probably…enjoyed climbing over.

The address that Blondie gave her was located in the heart of the city, not far from the Mi family’s old residence. It was one of the few scenic locations in the city, and with a Fanyin tree around, this was obviously not going to be a low-key place, due to which it was surrounded by several small businesses. When Mi Wan arrived, there was even a milk tea shop that was still open. The store owner was on his phone, playing a game to kill time.

The original host of her body was a milk tea fanatic so the moment she was at a milk tea store, Mi Wan’s body involuntarily walked over to buy a cup. The store owner observed Mi Wan’s figure and determined that she was a potential returning customer, so he carefully added a rewards card and said: “Get one free for every 6 purchases, remember to come everyday~~~”

Mi Wan politely accepted the rewards card as she inwardly grumbled: Who would come here every day? Turning around, Mi Wan took a sip through her straw and smacked her lips. Her eyes gleamed as she revised her previous thought: It’s not like I can’t come here. This tastes stronger than what you can get from convenience stores.

“Is that tree across from here the wishing tree?” Although she could see a tree filled with red satin ties, Mi Wan still wanted to confirm it with the milk tea store owner.

“That’s right, are you here to make a wish too?” The milk tea store owner opened another game app.

“Mmhmm.” Mi Wan nodded, and continued asking, “How old is this tree? It looks like it’s about to wither.”

The surrounding area around the wishing tree was an empty square. There was some distance between the milk tea shop and the wishing tree, and from this distance, Mi Wan noticed that there was not a single leaf on the right side of this tree, leaving only bare branches filled with red silk ties; while the left side was filled with vitality and leaves, which was very weird. When demons rampaged the earth 500 years ago, Fanyin trees were still common but this was the first time she had seen this type of half-withered-half-healthy Fanyin tree.

Is this some aesthetic evolution for this Fanyin tree because it enjoys this type of eclectic style?

“This tree has been around for centuries and it started becoming like that a few decades ago. They say it’s about to die, but it continued to persevere and grew new shoots every year. This half-withered-half-healthy look became its prominent feature,” the milk tea shop owner explained.

So this was a marketing angle, looks like today’s faith was difficult to come by.

“Is this tree effective?” The effectiveness was tied to the power of the Fanyin tree’s leaves.

“It should be pretty effective since people come here every day to make wishes.”

“That’s good enough.” Taking a large gulp of her milk tea, Mi Wan happily squinted, told the shop owner that she would return the next day to buy milk tea, and then walked towards the wishing tree.

Fanyin trees were not limited to a specific species, they could be Banyan trees or pine trees and they could even be an average fruit tree grown on temple grounds. Fanyin trees evolved from the state of ordinary trees as they fed on the occasional power of prayers, which led them to unleash their spiritual consciousness. Looking up at this Banyan tree before her eyes, Mi Wan noticed that the tree was filled with red silk ties shimmering with spiritual belief, and that was the power of prayer.

Wishes shone like twinkling stars in the night.

(Hello, Fanyin tree, I am demon hunter Mi Wan. I wish to trade my spiritual power for a single Fanyin leaf.) Mi Wan folded her hands and piously communicated with the Fanyin tree.

Fanyin trees only produced a special leaf every ten years that was hidden deep among tens of thousand of other leaves that could not be found by outsiders if the Fanyin tree did not voluntarily drop it. So to obtain such a special leaf, one had to successfully communicate with the Fanyin tree.

Except, one minute had passed~~~

The Fanyin tree remained silent, with no signs of response.

Mi Wan froze and took a step forward, laying the palm of her right hand on the bark of the trunk, and sent a pulse of pure spiritual energy.

(Hello Fanyin tree, I am demon hunter Mi Wan. I wish to trade my spiritual power for a single Fanyin leaf.)

Whoosh…

A gust of wind blew past, causing the tree to sway and some leaves to fall. Mi Wan took a glance around and looked back. Those fallen leaves did not contain the power of wishes. They were obviously blown to the ground by the timely wind.

“…” Was this a silent refusal?

Didn’t Fanyin trees usually enjoy trading their special leaves for spiritual power? Why couldn’t she do it? She clearly recalled that in the past her two senior brothers would often trade their spiritual power for Fanyin leaves to turn them into amulets to court the ladies, so why couldn’t she do it?

Just where did she go wrong?

Shaaa, Shaaa…

Er, there was no wind, so where was that sound coming from? Mi Wan looked around curiously and found a small sapling, about a meter, behind the ancient tree.

The Fanyin tree propagated?! This was good stuff.

Mi Wan was filled with glee. If the Fanyin tree propagated, it meant the Fanyin tree was filled with so much power from prayers that its main body was unable to contain it, so it propagated in order to store the excess. This type of propagation would not affect the Fanyin tree’s main body. While possessing a certain amount of prayer power, though it could not be compared to the special leaves on the Fanyin tree’s main body, digging up this large plant and picking its pieces would bring along pretty good results.

More importantly, the saplings of a Fanyin tree were only given to those who were fated to come across it. It did not require any trade. Whoever found it could just dig it up. So the reason the Fanyin tree ignored her, was to remind her that it had self-propagated.

Such a good tree!

Her luck was unexpectedly good.

“Relax, I’ll still give you my spiritual power after I take the sapling.”

Mi Wan happily ran back to the milk tea shop to borrow a small shovel from the shop owner and returned to dig. While she was working hard, midway through shovelling, a mother-daughter pair suddenly appeared under the wishing tree.
