Chapter hundred and four: A million dreams shattered

Rachael felt the sting like he had hurt her physically. What was he saying to her? The kiss they shared was meaningless because he was in his drunken state?

Yes, he may have been drunk but what she felt for him wasn't fleeting. And he had told her things afterwards. Things she wanted to hear but not quite the same. Things she stayed awake at night thinking about. Words she replayed over and over in head all the time and it made her smile. It made her hopeful. How dare he diminish those words to nothing? He had no right to take those words away from her. Rachael won't let him. She refused to let him.

"How dare you! You told me you could love me. You told me if you are capable of loving someone fully, it would be me. You said you were going to try. You said you can't get me out of your head"

Judd had about had enough from the ladies around him. People who dared him and provoke a reaction from him when all he wanted to do was be left alone.

He could get very angry and walk away or he could remember that she was worried about him. She had feelings for him. He was at the end of such feeling with Eve a long time ago and Judd remembered how it felt when those feelings were unrequited and taken for granted.

He watched the maiden with a more relaxed look. Rachael blue eyes were beginning to pull tears.

"Did you lie to me, Sir Judd?" She questioned him.

Judd thought about it. He remembered what he felt when he had kissed her near the pantry when he was tipsy, he felt wanted and he felt feelings he thought he was incapable of feeling.

He was not like that with his mistresses. It was almost the same thing he felt for Eve before the scandal.

Did he lie? Could he love her if he made an effort? Judd would never know. But he might be dead tomorrow and there was no reason hurting the poor girl and it was the truth anyway.

"I didn't lie, Rachael. I didn't lie. I could love you if I made the effort but we would never find out now, would we?"

Rachael knew he was telling the truth.

"I know. But I would rather have you alive out there than dead here. Take the basket and leave"

Rachael didn't bother with the tears on her cheeks. She just let them flow.

Judd alway felt the need to go the other direction whenever he was in the presence of a crying lady. It doesn't just make him uncomfortable, it made him nervous and he was the type of man that hated nervousness.

He took a step closer to her as he ignored the natural urge and voice that yelled at him to run towards the opposite direction. He made her look at him by lifting her chin with his finger. Then he kissed her. It wasn't a passionate kiss. It was the type two old lovers shared. It was soft and wet and it was goodbye.

"Goodbye, Rachael"

He picked up his sword and left the basket and started walking towards the castle. He wasn't going to take the easy way out. If the king sentence him to death then he shall die with honor.

"Sir Judd! It's won't matter. The Queen is going to find a way to save your life. She will find a way"

Judd may have stopped to hear what she had to say but he didn't say anything to her. The king might have a soft spot for his new bride but last Judd checked, the king's hands were tied and he can't spare his life without looking weak. And Judd would rather die than leave Aradale and the western hemisphere open for attack since a weak king sends the wrong Message.

Rachael stood there for a while after Judd left. She stayed because she can't be seen in tears over a noble man she could never have. Her mother Megan would flip if she found out.

Her feelings for Judd was against everything she taught Rachael and her brother, Ginger.

( That they treat you like family doesn't make you one, they are royalties and you are a commoner. Know your place and you will be happier)

Rachael wiped her face and took the basket with her. She returned to the castle only to be confronted by a distraught man servant.

"Where have you been? The Queen demands your presence, Rachael"

Without giving much thought to the absurdity of the basket, Rachael handed the basket to the manservant and took off towards the queen's chamber.

It took her half the time to get there. Jamie was pacing the room when Rachael knocked and entered. She was out of breath and panting.

"Where have you been, Rachael? I asked to see you an hour ago!"

"I apologize my Queen. I was running an errand for mother" Rachael decided to lie at the split second.

Jamie knew Alexander would be on the hunting ground by then. It was evening and the boar hunt was supposed to take place before sun down. It dawned on her, if she had any chance of changing Alexander's mind she would have to join the hunt.

"I need male clothing, Rachael...my size and preferably, one of noble making. Don't ask me what I need it for. I just do. I need it to save Sir Judd"

Jamie expected a raised eyebrow or a shocked expression but none came.

"Right away, your majesty....I will get them right away" Rachael dashed out the door.

She was halfway through when she remembered that she had no idea where to find male clothing for someone as petite as the Queen.

She searched her head for a solution. She could go to her brother for help or she could simply sneak into the king's chamber, grab his clothes, mend them to the queen's size herself and confess everything later to the queen.

Rachael pushed the door to the King's chambers open, she understood why it wasn't locked. No intruder in their right mind would dare enter into the room of the only man capable of maiming, destroying and totally obliterating them.

She closed the door behind her and went to his wardrobe. He opened it and started rumpaging through it. Then her eyes wandered to the right and she found the perfect clothes. As she tried to take it out , she heard someone Open the door and Rachael froze.

"Rachael! What are you doing here?"

"Ginger, I beg of you to pretend you didn't see me. I've got no time to explain, brother"

"Then leave before someone finds you here and you will join you know who on the chopping block...go Rachael!"

Rachael left but not before Ginger rolled the clothes and placed it in a rag to conceal it. Everyone knows that the punishment for theft was to cut off a useful body part. Ginger wondered why in Thor's name, his sister was risking her limb.

Rachael took the clothes to the Queen's Chamber, it was the only secluded place to mend the clothes without being interrupted.

Jamie was starring out the window when she came in.

"Did you get it?"

"Yes, your majesty. But I am afraid they will look bogus on you but I have everything I need to make them fit. It would take a couple of minutes"

Rachael went right to work while Jamie stared at her. She could never weld the needle as sufficient and with such precision as her lady's maid.

"I am done, Milady"

Jamie took the clothes from her. For some reason, she was filled with excitement like a wee child starring at her mother's breast. How long has it been since she dressed comfortable in a man's clothes?

Jamie needed minimum help in getting dressed. She was all set to crash hundreds of years old tradition except her hair will be a give away.

"Rachael, grab the scissors on the table and hand it over to me" Jamie ordered.

Rachael handed the scissors over to her before she realized what the queen intended doing with it.

"Your majesty! You can't trim your hair. We can't possibly explain that" Rachael exclaimed as her hand went to her mouth.

"Calm down, Rachael. It's just hair. It will grow back in no time"

Jamie was having the time of her life while Rachael stared at her in horror. This wasn't going to be easy to explain to the king or the rest of the world.

"I need a bow and some arrows"

"I don't know how to get that, your majesty"

"That's quite simple, Rachael. Go to the weaponry and tell anyone in charge that the queen wants a bow and some arrows....the finest they have got"

Rachael knew it now, she was in a world of hurt if the king finds out what she made the Queen do.
