Chapter hundred and nine: duties we have

Alexander stood near the window and looked over his kingdom. It was his throne room and he was dressed in his royal regalia with his crown and septre.

Jamie walked inside too in a blue dress that made Alexander fix his gaze on her. Strangely day by day, she was becoming accustomed to these ridiculously tight and uncomfortable dresses designed to make her take in less air.

"You look beautiful"

"Thank you, your highness" Jamie stood beside him and slowly he wrapped his hand on her waist.

"Your highness, we are in public. We should act as such" Jamie warned him.

"It doesn't make you any less my wife and people should mind their businesses anyway" Alexander smiled but Jamie noticed it didn't quite reach his eyes.

"It was that bad, huh? I mean your talk with Judd about his nuptials. I can certainly relate but at least he was given advanced warning unlike someone I know" Jamie was talking about herself.

Alexander decided not to say anything about the matter. There was nothing he would say that wouldn't lead to an argument. So, he kept mute.

Alexander and Jamie turned to a footstep walking inside the throne room. It was Sir Judd Luther.

"Actually, I haven't told him yet"

Jamie blinked. It didn't make a lot of sense. The wedding was supposed to be in a few hours.

"Wait what?" Jamie turned in surprise to look at the king but Alexander wasn't in the mood to think about her feelings. What matters was that he was going to tell Judd now.

"Your highness...my Queen"

Judd bowed to both royalties. He was in his knightly uniform with his sword. For a man who thinks he was about to be sentence to death in a few hours, he looked well adjusted and fine.

"Sir Judd, you will be marrying the Queen of Koi in a few hours, congratulations on your nuptials. You are dismissed"

Jamie blinked. It was the height of insensitivity she had ever seen. She watched the surprise on the young Knight's face and she turned back to stare at Alexander, hoping he would say more to the man he just destroyed his world but he didn't. Jamie was mortified.

She took a deep breath and spoke to the knight "I am sorry sir Judd but it's the only way to save your life"

Judd blinked "Well, I choose death. At least, I will die with honor. I don't want to be someone's consort and have children that won't take my name. And moreover, the lead knight responsibility is for life and you know that, king Alexander"

"Fine. You shall remain my lead knight and you don't have to live in Koi if you don't want to. It's not a love match, just political...to gain an ally. If the Queen of Koi allows it, then you may return to the West and be my lead knight after consummation"

Judd blinked again "So, that is my life now... doing whatsoever my to be wife allows me to? if this is not an order, I will choose..."

"It's an order, Sir Luther Judd. You shall wedd the Queen of Koi in a few hours. Congratulations" Alexander interrupted him.

"Yes, your highness" Judd turned and walked out.

Jamie faced Alexander, her face filled with unspoken angry words. He was an insensitive ass and she was done with it.

"You are really the devil" She whispered to him before walking out.

Max tried his best to not say something but his human was acting stupid again. They were just finally in a good speaking term with the Luna and he just had to open his mouth.

"If you have something to say, say it Max! Your growling is giving me a headache!" Alexander said out loud instead of through his mind link.

(No. I have nothing to say but you just may have ruined the only chance with our Luna. Will she even agree to see the seer now?)

Alexander knew his wolf had a point. He could have handled it better. Marriage was a sensitive subject for Janessa.

"I will fix this"

But Alexander didn't have the chance until a few hours later while he sat on the ceremony between Queen Eileen of Koi and Sir Luther Judd of Aradale. Jamie was silent through out the ceremony.

After the ceremony, the couple departed for Koi and Jamie stood by the railing and watched them go. She might have saved a life but she also ruined two lives.

"Janessa"

Jamie was startled by Alexander's voice. She turned quickly to look at him. She felt awkward around him now. Not knowing exactly how to act.

"Yes, your highness"

"We should go to Trinity, now. Everyone is distracted and won't notice if we go missing for a while" Alexander had set out to apologize to his wife but instead when he opened his mouth, going to Trinity was what came out.

"Yes, your highness. Are we going as ourselves or as commoners?" Jamie asked him.

It was his kingdom, he can go and come as he pleases and he wasn't in a mood to hide. Alexander wanted a dare, something to make him feel alive again.

"We go as ourselves" He turned and left Jamie.

A hour later, Jamie stood by a carriage as she waited for her husband. When he finally appeared, he wasn't wearing the clothes he wore to Judd's marriage ceremony. He was casually dressed unlike Jamie that still wore the blue dress.

"Is the princess coming with us?" Jamie asked as soon as she saw Rosemund descending the stairs towards them.

"Yes" Alexander murmured.

Jamie would have liked a warning before spending a hour in a carriage with her judgemental sister in law but she wasn't given any. Without waiting to be helped into the carriage, she opened the door and made herself comfortable on the seat.

Alexander hated that they were at odds again and she was acting out. He didn't say anything. He helped the princess into the carriage and was about to order the coach to leave for Trinity when Sir Walters and Sir Derrick showed up on horses.

"Aren't you on duty somewhere else?" Alexander questioned the knights.

"No. Our duty is to protect you. Sir Judd insisted I take on his role as lead knight in his absence and he reorganized the whole Knighthood rank, your highness. So, until Judd returns, I am your shadow knight" Sir Walters answered.

Alexander watched them like they were the most annoying creatures in Derkal but just like Judd, the knights appeared unaffected.

"What else did Judd say as he rearranged my entire knighthood rank without my permission?" Alexander barked at them.

"That you will most definitely be unhappy with the arrangements and you will order us numerously to make our presence scarce but we should do our job all the same" Walters had framed it nicely. Judd told him to disregard Alexander's discomfort about the arrangements and protect him at all cost. Judd was bold and Walters wasn't.

"Speak only when I speak to you. It was why Judd was exceptional at his job, his ability to go days without saying a word and of course, he discretion. Do you understand Walters?"

Walters smiled. "Of course, your highness. Be seen but do not speak. What if I want to asked you something urgent? What if..."

Alexander ignored sir Walters, he opened the carriage and entered. He knew it now that Judd had made Walters the lead knight as some sort of revenge for making him marry. Walters was a parrot. Alexander would never have a moment peace anymore. But Alexander relaxed when he remembered that he can always have his tongue removed.

The carriage appeared cold, both his sister and wife weren't talking to each other. Jamie made it a point to ignore him too and for a while it was like that till Rosemund spoke.

"Alexander said you came up with the idea to marry Queen Eileen and Sir Judd?" Rosemund asked Jamie.

"I did. I suppose you have an opinion about it" Jamie wasn't in the mood to play nice.

Rosemund didn't take the bait. "I just wanted to say thank you"

"I could hardly have done nothing since everything was my fault, remember?" Jamie asked and looked at her.

Alexander decided to stay out of whatever was going on between the most important people in his life.

"I shouldn't have said that. I apologize, Queen Janessa"

Jamie was surprised by the apology. She had expected Rosemund to say something hurtful but instead she was apologizing.

"I accept your apology, Crown princess"

Rosemund smiled softly at her. Jamie smiled too but only when she looked away.

"The last time we were here, it was an adventure!" Rosemund had the childish twinkle in her eyes that amused Alexander.

"Well, now it's strictly kingdom affairs little one. We are here"

Alexander helped them both down from the carriage.. He was a little nervous, he has no idea what the Seer was going to tell him about Janessa.
