Chapter hundred and thirteen: Journey to the East

Jamie sat upright immediately she heard what Alexander said.

"Really? You will help me find answers?"

"Of course, Monisha. Now, go to bed. Tomorrow will get you some answers" Alexander pulled her to himself. She lay on his chest. He could feel her chest rise and fall softly as she relaxed further. His right hand played with her hair. It was short but he loved running his fingers through it.

Today she had added an artificial hair attachment to give it the appearance of a long hair but Alexander kind of liked her hair the way it was now.

Neither of them slept for a while.

"Do you think Sir Judd and Queen Eileen are alright?" Jamie asked him.

"Judd won't let anything happen to his wife. Western men are protective of their brides, Monisha" Alexander reassured her.

"I know that but are they alright? Did I destroy two lives today, Alexander? I can't believe I did that to Eileen. I can't believe I trapped her with a man that doesn't feel anything for her" Talking about the marriage binding that took place that morning made Jamie sad.

"Or maybe, you did them a favor. Maybe he will wake up to realize his imposed bride was the best thing that could ever happen to him. Maybe he will be willing to spend the rest of his life convincing his bride the same. Maybe it was meant to be" Alexander spoke in whispers to her. His voice was smooth and hopeful.

But Jamie couldn't shake the feeling that he might be talking about himself not Judd. She decided to answer him.

"What if his wife wants to feel the same for Judd but she can't. Because admitting she felt anything other than hatred and resentment for the man that stole her first life from her, might be too hard for her to imagine. Maybe she wants to relax in his arms every night and allow herself to feel something and she wants to feel it but she can't. Not without betraying everything she stands for. Not without knowing that everyone she left behind to start a new forced life was okay. Maybe she wants to feel it too but...maybe not. She has no choice in the matter"

Alexander knew Jamie was talking about herself too. He felt the little happiness that always seemed to originate from the abdomen and slowly to the rest of the body.

She wanted to feel but she was worried she would be betraying Namura.

She wanted to feel! Alexander kissed her hair. It was the best news he has heard all day.

"What if everyone she left behind was okay? What if they gave their blessings to our union?" Alexander was done trying to pretend they weren't talking about themselves.

Jamie sat upright and turned to look at him. Her eyes glittering with unshed tears.

"Don't you get it! My father would never give you his blessing! You are the reason he lost two of his daughters and you are the reason I lost my kingdom, my sister and my inheritance. Even if I wanted to feel something, I couldn't. Because that would be too painful, Alexander. Hating you is just easier"

Jamie felt the tears run down her cheeks. Alexander sat upright. Using the back of his palm, he wiped the tears from her face. Then he kissed her lips.

"I understand, Jamie" He whispered to her.

And he did. He had to hate his father, King Darius too because hatred was much easier than love. Hate allowed him permission to feel indifferent towards the man that killed his mother and many times than Alexander like to admit threw his little sister into a raging storm just for the fun of watching her fight for her life. Loving a man like that would have been too painful and so Alexander took the easy way out.

But Jamie wasn't King Darius but somehow, Alexander was a King Darius to her life. Some one she has to hate because loving would be too painful with all the baggages in their relationship. But he didn't want her to hate him but there was nothing he could do.

"Good night, Janessa"

Alexander lay back down and turned away from her. That he understood doesn't mean it didn't hurt to hear her say it out loud.

Alexander stared out the window, the sky wasn't completely devoid of light. They were stars up, just twinkling their way down to the rest of human race. It reminded him of the night they were attacked in the eastern hemisphere and his father was wounded. Alexander doesn't remember much of that night. He chose to forget. Because remembering would lead to the acknowledgement that his father died trying to protect him and then he would be forced to love him. And like Jamie said, admitting love for a man that murdered his mother and tortured his sister would be horrible to consider. And so Alexander chose to remember him as the tyrant he was.

Hate was just easier.

****

When Alexander woke up the next morning, Jamie was looking at him. He blinked and stared right back at her. Yesterday had been intense and morning was bound to be awkward.

"Morning" He whispered to her like speaking loudly would break whatever trance they were in.

"I am sorry" Jamie whispered to him.

Alexander didn't say anything for a while. He just wanted to keep looking at her.

But he wondered what Jamie was apologizing for. He would like to know what it was.

"I apologize for last night, your highness. I may have spoken out of turn" Jamie answered his question without waiting for him to ask it.

Alexander touched her cheeks and then he slowly caress them with the back of his fingers.

"Did you mean those words you said to me last night?" He asked her.

"Yes" Jamie figured what was the point of lying. She only apologize because she could have said her mind in a way that wasn't so brute and discerning.

"Then don't apologize. You don't have to apologize for saying your truth. It wouldn't be fair to you or me"

Alexander stood up from the bed. He needed a swim. Sleeping next to the woman he desire but couldn't have was as hard as they come and it took most of his strength to do it. But he liked the way she somehow ends up on his chest whenever he opened his eyes in the middle of the night. The way she somehow smiles like she was listening to a joke in her sleep. It made everything worthwhile.

"If you want answers, you should get ready before noon. I found someone near the boundary that can give us an insight to the happenings of yesterday"

"Really?" Jamie stood up fast too.

"Yes. Will be ready by noon?" Alexander asked her.

"Yes"

Alexander nodded and walked towards the door.

"Alexander?"

"Yes, Janessa"

"Thank you"

Alexander wondered whether she will thank him after she finds out, she was so close to home yet she wouldn't be allowed to go there.

Alexander simply walked out the door.

The king traveled with most of the king's knights about ten of them.

The carriage housed the Royal family...King Alexander, Queen Jamie and the crown princess Rosemund.

"Thank you both for helping me finding answers" Jamie looked at her sister in law before her gaze went to Alexander. She was indeed grateful to them.

Alexander felt uncomfortable with the gratitude coming from her since he had an ulterior motive for making the trip.

"You don't have to be grateful, Janessa. I will do anything for family" Rosemund answered her and she meant it. She just omitted they family she was talking about was Alexander.

Alexander simply shrugged it off.

Rosemund watched him. The closer they came to the eastern hemisphere the more tensed he became.

Rosemund reached into her bag and took out three cups. Jamie was surprised when she handled one to her and one to Alexander. She took out a small wooden sealed container of wine.

"You brought wine. You are the best, Sister in law"

Rosemund smiled softly at her before she poured it into each cup. Jamie took a sip and another and another. She suddenly felt fatigued and her eyes were heavy like she couldn't keep them open for long. The cup almost fell out of her hand but Rosemund immediately took it from her. Then everything became pitch back for Jamie like she was floating endless in a dark peaceful cloud.

Alexander saw how fast she started acting strange. He dropped his cup and touched her forehead and he shook her to wake her up.

"Don't bother, she won't wake up. She will be out for the next three or so hours. Just until we are at our destination" Rosemund told her brother.

Alexander knew then that something was wrong.. His sister had done something to Janessa.
